  • If he takes over on Monday, he can manage 2 games running against Crawley...

Oddly more excited by the Challinor news than any other manager I've heard about so far. Maybe it's just because he doesn't have L1 failure on his CV yet but Cowley and Appleton do not spark joy. Challinor feels like a manager on the up for the most part, though I'm sure we can find a way to bring him down
And yet Challinor was sacked with his club in a National League relegation spot. His subsequent success elsewhere shows that one failure doesn't define him but it's a reminder that even the best normally have a blot
     on their record.
Well, to be fair that's quite a reductive view on it. Challinor took over Fylde in 2011 when they were in the NPL First Division North and won it. He then guided them to 5th the next season losing in the play-offs, then 3rd where he won them. In the Conference North he then finished 2nd (PO semis) then 3rd (PO final loss). The next season they won it and he then finished 7th and 5th up yet another league where he again had a bad PO experience. In 8 years he had three promotions, one FA Trophy win and 6 PO appearances. The only seasons he didn't get his team into the POs was when he won the league until his final season where things started to go wrong. They sacked him in October 2019 with the team in the relegation zone on goal difference and they then went on to be relegated anyway, albeit in a curtailed season. They lost a lot of players that season to L1 and L2 teams so I'm not surprised they struggled. Every manager eventually hits a point where they need to move on but to call his time at Fylde a 'failure' redeemed by his future success is insane, they were two leagues down when he started with them. The only thing that slightly worries me about him is he seems to be absolutely rubbish at winning play-off games but that's the least of our worries at the moment.
But he did gain promotion with Hartlepool from the National League through the play-offs.

Arent the Cowley known to be long-ball merchants? Not sure that will get the best out of May
Apparently they are preserved to be long ball merchants buy people who don't watch they're teams play.

More direct than Man City but John Beck and Harry Basset they are not.

  • At least he'll sort out the long throw problem : - )

Would be surprised by this one, if it happens, as Stockport seem a well run club with serious backing from a committed owner but I guess we're still a bigger club.

Also, always seen him as a northern lad.

But an interview is not the same as an appointment.

  • Don’t know much about Brady but I like that he has experience working with youngsters, surely must be a pre requisite for the job

What a pond we are now finishing in. With all due respect Stockport manager (lost 3 out of their first 5 games) and now the Northampton manager.
Glad we have billionaires owning the club that are clearly going for the cheap options and shows a complete lack of ambition.
    Seasons aren't decided in August.

They W2 | D2 of their first ten last season, and were 3-pts off the bottom two

Stockport finished 4th... 4-pts off the automatics

Would people genuinely be tipping us for promotion if we'd won 3/5 this season, in the same way that our "relegation" form is being thrown about.

Who do you expect us to go for considering we are a league 1 club?...  who do you think we can attract?

  • Didn't Jon Brady play with Rodwell at Rushden & Diamonds?

So we tout the usual suspects, Appleton and Cowley and everyone moans. Then young up and coming managers are mentioned and everyone moans. Internal promotion for Pearce? Everyone moans.

Newsflash, we're a bang average league 1 side and have been for years now, we're not an attractive proposition, you aren't going to entice world class managers here
Would imagine there's quite a few would rather be working at Charlton than be unemployed.

Yes they did... Didn't realise Rodwell was once a player actually
  • A lot of different names being interviewed / approached, a very public search for a new manager.

All those who have put money on Cowley are gonna be disappointed then.

    Challinor is now the favourite

  • Cowley would be hugely uninspiring. Down naff-all since leaving Lincoln.
2019/20: full season with Huddersfield, finished 18th in the Championship

2020/21: 12 games at the back end of the season with Portsmouth - winning six (two draws, four losses). Team were in 10th and ended the season in 8th.

2021/22: full season with Portsmouth, finished 10th. 20 games won out of 46 (13 draws, 13 losses)

2022/23: 22 games with Portsmouth, sacked after 1-3 defeat to Charlton. Team was in 12th and finished season in 8th. Record: W7 D10 L5

So since Huddersfield done better than whoever was managing us.
  • Asked my mate about challinor and this is what I got… Can’t say it sounds too exciting and the general consensus I have seen from Stockport fans is he is struggling this year.
This doesn't exactly sound overly encouraging.

Especially as we have no one decent to cross the ball and our main striker is 5ft 9.

I'm a bettor but next manager markets are something I never touch. It would be a surprise if Charlton chose Challinor (how's that for alliteration?) but Stockport would be a good next job for the Cowleys.

"The lower league look".  That's about right.
  • At the moment winning a game would feel like a miracle. What I don’t want from any more managers is all the PR nonsense, pub with the fans, trip the museum (although it’s fantastic), and all the other gaining a deep appreciation of the club and its fans nonsense. It’s been done time and time again by failed managers and it’s too easy. Just get the best out of the players.
What are your 3 goals for today?
  • At least if we get Challinor he may have better insight into who should be taking our long throws.Maybe not our main striker who is 5ft7in.
