Perhaps I'm old fashioned but I still can't get my head round how managers can be judged in less than a year in the job however that seems to be the way nowadays. He certainly threw himself into the role and came across as a really decent bloke, results have been shocking this season however who knows how things would have gone if he'd had time to turn things round.
As with countless managers before him I think he deserves substantial mitigation given the constant circus that seems to surround our club on a permanent basis.
As for the next appointment, I'd be thrilled if it was Bowyer although cant see it happening.
The promotion season was the most enjoyable time as a fan for some years (There's been very little competition). I was gutted to see him go and none of the appointments since have done any better, although granted they all have plenty of mitigation.
Things didn't end well but there's a huge amount of re-writing history going on with fans saying he got 'lucky' with the players at his disposal. Lots of managers have decent squads and don't get promoted, every season there's about 10-12 teams you could argue have squads capable of promotion.
The fact is if you win promotion you've earnt it on merit and that team played some really good football that season. I certainly don't remember seeing that standard of play matched since he left so he was clearly a decent coach (Or clever enough to appoint decent coaches). I know some point out the later parts of Lee's time didn't go so well but was any of the football on offer even then any worse than what we have seen the last couple of seasons? Because what I've seen has largely been dross.
I know the 'I improve players' line got trotted out a lot by Lee, but the facts are that he did just that. We have a lot of players in our squad at the moment who on paper should be capable league one players who for whatever reason just aren't delivering.
He had a fantastic record of bringing players through the academy as well which again would come in handy given we appear to be relying on a number of youth players this season barring any significant movement in the transfer window.
All that said I don't see it happening. From the names I've seen suggested I think Darren Moore would be a really good shout. Always came across very articulate and already proven he can get a team out of this division. Not seen his name mentioned but Dave Challinor plays a very attractive brand of football and is a promotion specialist (Albeit at a lower level). Stockport seem very well run and very well backed financially so whether he would actually come is another question.
I'm normally glass half-full with all things Charlton but like many fans recent events have led to some real disillusionment with how things are going and I just can't shake the feeling the next appointment will be really underwhelming. Really hoping to be proved wrong.
Problem is that our expectations are so low and the SMT, along with Methven, seem to be all over the place.
It looks as if the incoming players will not be good enough to really lift our level, so the speed at which key injured players return will be more important than who we sign over the next few days.
It looks very doubtful we will get a really good manager, but like you, I hope I am wrong. Whoever comes in needs support, but it is really hard to support our club with the shit ownership at the helm.
Bowyer is not the answer.
As we do not know for certain who all the owners are, describing them as shit is a little unfair. The problem with a large consortium or a small private shareholder base is that they are not focused on the day to day, just the financial results and leave management up to those who enticed them to become shareholders in the first place. The management can act at will on the football side because the shareholders in the consortium are sufficiently distanced at this stage. They will smell a rat eventually.
As to the next manager i would not welcome Cowley since his last match in charge at Portsmouth was Holden's second in charge of us and we know the result. It wouldnt be an improvement. I suspect that Holden had an idea that Saturday was his last match and it is possible that he did not pick the squad, did not want to do a pre match interview, but did what he could to rectify the situation at half time.
Darren Moore would be my preference but is unlikely to be the preference of CM, EW or JR. It could be a Bowyer return, but I fear for a worse outcome and there are plenty worse options than Bowyer that this management team are likely to go for on the bàsis of saving a few quid.
Have to remember Holden came out of nowhere so wouldn’t be surprised if that happens this time too. Those markets just seem to be the same names recycled
What's wrong with Dan Cowley? 754 games managed, 379 wins, 175 draws, 200 losses. 50% win rate overall
Latest gig at Pompey: 97 games, 42 wins, 27 draws and 28 losses.
He's vastly more experienced than Dean Holden and more likely to get us out of the league than some of the names mentioned. Pompey fans will probably give pelters but they've still managed 4 draws this season without him.
I actually like the sound of that, at the very least we won't be lingering at the bottom of the table
Can't say I've ever been impressed watching a Cowley side the way I have other managers in L1. He strikes me as someone still living off past glories and on his way back down.

Living off past glories Sounds ideal for us then 😉
The ideal "Interim" appointment would have been Curbs, not Chrissy Powell. It would have give the whole place a massive lift. If it didn't work out, he wouldn't have been there long enough to destroy his previous reputation.
But if it did work out, well then Curbs could make the decision to either continue to enjoy retirement, or take on the huge task of the Permanent Manager role.
The basics of football don't change, and we can't even do the basics ATM. Curbs would be the man to get that right.
Any modern day tactical knowledge that Curbs lacks, could be compensated for with the appointment of a younger, more knowledgeable assistant.
When Bowyer resigned on March 15th 2021, we were 8th in League One, two points outside the top six.
He had just guided us to four games unbeaten following a tough Xmas spell that saw us drop from 6th to 12th.
So you’re telling me he walked out on us , let’s welcome him back with open arms Bowyer has zero interest in anything but himself , he was happy to take the Range Rover and whatever strange contract ESI gave him with their make believe money, which is fair enough but he’d leave after a day if wet spam or we all hate Leeds scum knocked on the door All the good players were Bowyer scouted or was it Gallen Ive got him in the Stuart Pearce initial up and at em bounce mode but won’t ever work long term and will need a lot better player for us to sniff promotion . It’s a no from me
Bowyer being appointed would show a lack of ambition.
And the completely polarised views at the mere rumour of his return say it all about how well he would unite the club……..
If Bowyer is the limit of ambition then that’s disappointing
I'm not sure that people on this site do represent the views of the average supporter. On the positive side a lot are well informed on club history etc, on the other....
Just passing on a message I received... Glad to listen to others without scoffing. I will ignore the childish nonsense said since. XX
I feel the pain, you pass on what you are told, and people dig at you! Sometimes, best to say nothing.. Few on this forum have an agenda as one person keeps telling me I have!
Richardson feels like the sensible pick - got Wigan out of this league as champions and worked under their weird Bahraini owners. Didn't realise he was sacked 2 weeks after signing a 3 year extension 😳
No one I've seen talk about them has ever had a bad word to say about the Cowley's as people but I just find their style of play incredibly dour.

A clamour for Bowyer and even considering Cowley or a return for Robinson makes me wonder if we deserve what we’re getting at the moment. I know expectations are set to low, but really?!
We’re nearly bottom of league 2 with a poor squad and no manager at the end of August. It would be odd if expectations were sky high . I do wonder who you might prefer ?

I'd be astonished if Holden came out of nowhere to take back the job he's just been relieved of 😉 but I get your point.
All this talk of returning ex managers. Is Riga the only one who actually has? An earlier manager did, but no others in my lifetime I don't think.
Edit - Oh and just for the record, in throwing a tantrum, whoever comes through the door, I'm done, whatever that's supposed to mean and what all who say it don't .
I work in Portsmouth and have a few Pompey supporting mates. They referred to the Cowley’s as the PE teachers and whilst they talked a lot of technical drivel, the evidence on the pitch was that their football wasn’t much better than you would get from a PE teacher.
The longer I think about it, putting aside my love for Sir Chis who I would have in a heartbeat, Leam Richardson seems to me to be the perfect fit. That Wigan side were excellent and I was furious for him at the time he got sacked for Wigan. It all unravelled very fast after his departure as well with a supposed big name in Kolo Toure.
I think we’re a good proposition for him too.
I have respect for the Cowley’s but I don’t want them as our manager. I also don’t think they fit the criteria Andy Scott will be looking for based on his previous appointments at other clubs who were all more ball playing managers.
I’ve been supporting us for over 40 years and the only successful managers we’ve had have been promoted internally or have connections with the club before hand not one outside manager has come in and been successful ie winning promotion. Unless I’ve forgotten.
Suppose we got to get lucky and get one sooner or later.

Nathan Jones or Leam Richardson. Both perfectly gettable and infinitely more ambitious than bringing back former managers.

Stop grandstanding and put your money on CAFC failure

load of wank
It is as toxic on here, as it is in the club
I think they would sort the defence out, and we might not get much exciting attacking football!
Personally, I would like to Leam Richardson or Nathan Jones.
