Dobson was an average league one player made out by a number of fans as a premiership player sorry he was miles away from even championship player .. how many reckless tackles on the edge of our box did he make , how many passes went a stray .again in dangerous positions .. yes he had his positives but fact that no one was rushing to sign him says how “ football “ saw him …. Coventry completely diff player far more skilful and better passer of the ball , he don’t rush in or makes last ditch tackles because he reads a game better and so intercepts long before he needs to tackle or lunge in …..8

So, final preseason match on the horizon and still no, no1 keeper.
Presumably if this doesn’t change, I hope it does, Mannion takes the 🧤?0 -
Jeez this thread is tedious when we make most of our signings early doors.11

Just because he doesn't thunder into tackles like Dobbo doesn't make him a worse player
Just because he doesn't run around like a lunatic doesn't make him a worse player than Dobbo
Here are some comparison stats from Wyscout which some of you may find interesting....this is based on them being in a comparable position.
There is not a lot between them in fairness. I loved Dobbo, and enjoyed watching him but he was limited. I actually think he improved as the season went on - presumably because he felt his place was under threat but maybe also because he had a little more freedom with Coventry helping out with defensive duties.
This conversation will probably go on and on but this little graphic goes to show that, according to Wyscout, I'd say Coventry just about edges
I've also attached the extract from Wyscout comparing ALL metrics captured in the system (Defensive, Attacking, Set Pieces, Passing, Key Passing) in an Excel format for anyone interested in it
Which very much fits in with Jones front foot aggressive style he wants.

The one thing I'd like to see with Coventry is him being a bit more expansive with his passing , he's got it in his locker with the pass for the penalty away at Derby being a key example but it felt like a lot of the time he kept it more simple, which is fine but I think he's got a lot more range.7

Buying the players early has made them too comfortable and over relaxed.
If we had been sensible and hung on a bit longer on signing them they would be trying harder to impress.
This is why most club's wait until deadline day to get the hungry players.27 -

Oh that would massively change things. I have no doubt he can probably do it but we just haven't seen it yet. If he can add passing through the lines to his repotoire then that would make him a real asset in that holding role. He's never going to be a scrappy break it up type holder.0 -

Coventry's style is more to intercept the pass that put that player through. It's not as dynamic and doesn't really stir the blood like a full blooded sliding tackle does but its effective in its own way.
Hopefully we will see the player we hoped he'd be this season.

Said absolutely no one.

So the rumours thread has turned into the 'is Coventry any good thread'. FFS I wish NJ would hurry up and get some more signings in, to stop all this bloody stupid in-fighting! It's bloody boring!

This Coventry vs Dobson thing is going to get REALLY annoying this season, almost as tiring as an update every time Alfie May pulls his socks on or sneezes...
Coventry is a completely different player to Dobson. It's like trying to compare Carrick to Roy Keane. Both very different types of players. We all loved the blood and thunder and commitment of Dobson, largely due to everyone else being rubbish and not seemingly caring. Another element was Sunderland fans negative opinions and us wanting him to prove them wrong. Coventry now has to "try to top" Dobson to get even an honest assessment of his strengths and abilities.
A lot has also been made about the need for a number 10, but looks like Jones doesn't play with a 10, so probably isn't going to go for one. He tends to prefer a defensive midfielder with 2x 8's who should be able to get up and down the pitch, whilst also being able to tackle a bit. Jurgen Klopp once said he had never seen an attacking midfielder better than his high press. That's why he tended not to use them properly with Liverpool and had a more workman like midfield who would press and win the ball back quickly, forcing errors and trying to utilise the space created.
Creativity in a Jones team comes from harassing the opposition into mistakes and from the pace and trickery of our wing backs. People complaining about sideways passing are probably not going to like what they see as it will be the main tactic to get it to a wing back, failing that a more 'direct' ball that will be swarmed to try to create space.
Our midfield is currently missing 2 things: someone who can unlock a defence (which it doesn't look like we're going to get as we'll try to run over teams and 'brute force' any defence). And someone who can carry the ball and drag the team up the pitch. Someone who can run with the ball like a Scott Parker, Ricky Holmes or Joe Aribo.
Goals in the team is a WHOLE other conversation!!11 -
Really hoping that a new keeper signs today as I’m really hoping to see a largely set team on Saturday.2

It's crazy to think that we had James Beadle and had to let him go.7 - Sponsored links:

Behave Ronnie,
I have never read one Post saying George Dobson was/is a Premiership player on CL.
He may turn into a Championship player but Champ clubs didn't appear to be queuing up for our EX 100 % player.
So he does still have things to prove.
I have always believed George could turn into a goalscoring midfielder with maybe 8 to 10 goals in the mediocre League 1 in the right team with a set up so he can do his runs from Midfield and be encouraged to shoot. I said two years that George has too much energy to be used as a defensive/ sitting midfielder.
Not sure if Wrexham and Parky will give Dobbo licence to roam but I feel we will miss him, yet I will be delighted if Coventry, Berry, Taylor, Anderson, Docherty etc are a class above.
Can we wait for the above to deliver( give them a few games !) before another poster said they are better than George.
Just my opinion and I do know George Dobson's weaknesses but he was a light in the darkness for CAFC over the last 3 seasons.

Think Dobson was an ok player who looked better because he was in a shit team18

Struggling to keep up with ongoing transfer developments, but hoped to catch up by going to the Wimbledon match.I didn’t expect us to be outplayed (by and large) by a League 2 side, and left feeling ver deflated. Are we set for another year of disappointment, or do we feel that the new players need time to settle in?
It felt like we lacked quality, and there’s only ten days left to sort things out.4 -

Stat I have is that he has played 75 games (no idea how many minutes/sub on/off in five seasons.
Why, if he is a ball-winning midfielder with good distribution?0 -

Doesn't it normally work that ok(bang average) players look better in a good side ?
Danny Green or Waggy at CAFC and in the Premier,
Phil Neville springs to mind at United.0
