So the rumours thread has turned into the 'is Coventry any good thread'. FFS I wish NJ would hurry up and get some more signings in, to stop all this bloody stupid in-fighting! It's bloody boring!
This Coventry vs Dobson thing is going to get REALLY annoying this season, almost as tiring as an update every time Alfie May pulls his socks on or sneezes...
Coventry is a completely different player to Dobson. It's like trying to compare Carrick to Roy Keane. Both very different types of players. We all loved the blood and thunder and commitment of Dobson, largely due to everyone else being rubbish and not seemingly caring. Another element was Sunderland fans negative opinions and us wanting him to prove them wrong. Coventry now has to "try to top" Dobson to get even an honest assessment of his strengths and abilities.
A lot has also been made about the need for a number 10, but looks like Jones doesn't play with a 10, so probably isn't going to go for one. He tends to prefer a defensive midfielder with 2x 8's who should be able to get up and down the pitch, whilst also being able to tackle a bit. Jurgen Klopp once said he had never seen an attacking midfielder better than his high press. That's why he tended not to use them properly with Liverpool and had a more workman like midfield who would press and win the ball back quickly, forcing errors and trying to utilise the space created.
Creativity in a Jones team comes from harassing the opposition into mistakes and from the pace and trickery of our wing backs. People complaining about sideways passing are probably not going to like what they see as it will be the main tactic to get it to a wing back, failing that a more 'direct' ball that will be swarmed to try to create space.
Our midfield is currently missing 2 things: someone who can unlock a defence (which it doesn't look like we're going to get as we'll try to run over teams and 'brute force' any defence). And someone who can carry the ball and drag the team up the pitch. Someone who can run with the ball like a Scott Parker, Ricky Holmes or Joe Aribo.
I'd rather us go down the loan route, I wouldn't mind someone like James Trafford or Dean Henderson from one of the top clubs. Begovic won't be cheap and I'd rather the budget go on other areas, particularly when many young keepers in the Big 6 are more than capable of League One.
It's crazy to think that we had James Beadle and had to let him go.
Hilarious that the only poster who liked this comment was Golfie....
Dobson was an average league one player made out by a number of fans as a premiership player sorry he was miles away from even championship player .. how many reckless tackles on the edge of our box did he make , how many passes went a stray .again in dangerous positions .. yes he had his positives but fact that no one was rushing to sign him says how “ football “ saw him …. Coventry completely diff player far more skilful and better passer of the ball , he don’t rush in or makes last ditch tackles because he reads a game better and so intercepts long before he needs to tackle or lunge in …..
Behave Ronnie, I have never read one Post saying George Dobson was/is a Premiership player on CL.
He may turn into a Championship player but Champ clubs didn't appear to be queuing up for our EX 100 % player. So he does still have things to prove.
I have always believed George could turn into a goalscoring midfielder with maybe 8 to 10 goals in the mediocre League 1 in the right team with a set up so he can do his runs from Midfield and be encouraged to shoot. I said two years that George has too much energy to be used as a defensive/ sitting midfielder. Not sure if Wrexham and Parky will give Dobbo licence to roam but I feel we will miss him, yet I will be delighted if Coventry, Berry, Taylor, Anderson, Docherty etc are a class above.
Can we wait for the above to deliver( give them a few games !) before another poster said they are better than George.
Just my opinion and I do know George Dobson's weaknesses but he was a light in the darkness for CAFC over the last 3 seasons.

I think you might be telling porkies again Ronald.
Struggling to keep up with ongoing transfer developments, but hoped to catch up by going to the Wimbledon match.
I didn’t expect us to be outplayed (by and large) by a League 2 side, and left feeling ver deflated.
Are we set for another year of disappointment, or do we feel that the new players need time to settle in? It felt like we lacked quality, and there’s only ten days left to sort things out.
Stat I have is that he has played 75 games (no idea how many minutes/sub on/off in five seasons.
Why, if he is a ball-winning midfielder with good distribution?
I can't be arsed with trawling all the way back through the posts about it, if you want to know that badly go look it up yourself or find it within my previous posts. I get bored just typing out half my own comments, I don't want to go back a re-read all of them just to provide evidence that's already readily available to someone with half a brain, Google and 2 minutes to spare
Sadly, I suspect it may be 2 out of 3, at best, in the case of this particular poster.

Can not believe it's the end of September in 10 days 😮
Think Dobson was an ok player who looked better because he was in a shit team
Doesn't it normally work that ok players look better in a good side ?
Danny Green or Waggy at CAFC and in the Premier, Phil Neville springs to mind at United.
Simon Francis!
Simon Francis had the potential to be a good attacking full back even when he was at CAFC ( I said it back then and had people laugh in my face) but it took the coaching skills of Eddie Howe to bring it out after he totally lost confidence. Howe even turned Francis into a CB later which I was surprised about !
You can bomb out at CAFC but still make it somewhere else with the right set up and restored belief.

I think we have quality in Berry, Docherty and Godden but it’s just they aren’t quite up to speed yet. Once they’ve had the full pre-season we will hopefully start to see it once the proper games start
In regards to the Dobbo and Coventry argument. One was wanted by Championship sides in January but we won his signature. The other was only wanted by Wrexham and a random Hungarian side in January and the summer.

Correct but ?
CAFC P0TY 21/22 winner Dobson CAFC POTY22/23 runner up Dobson CAFC POTY 23/24 runner up Dobson
The most consistent player we have had for years and obviously the voters agreed.
We now move on as George has done and we need all our midfielders to step up to the plate for CAFC. What these players do for CAFC is what's counts now. Not what potential or how they played for other clubs.
Wigan is the first of 46 matches so we need to be on it from game one not friendlies when the last ref didn't even have his yellow cards with him.

We've had plenty of very consistent players over the last few years. Most of them haven't been any good though.

Agree. I put Dobson in the same bracket as Kishishev....nowhere near as good a footballer as Charlton fans believe, but adored because they ran around like lunatics chasing after their own lack of abilities, but interpreted as caring and hardworking

Winner Runner up Runner up.
Consistent maybe, but the facts are there in front of us...downward trajectory. Next 2 seasons would be also ran and then non Runner after that.

What?! Kishishev was a great footballer.
Radostin Kishishev would walk into the current team and improve it beyond belief. And he's 50.
Pompey have made Anthony Scully available for transfer - would be a gamble with his injury record as he only featured 9 times for Pompey last season , but a player I know was heavily mentioned when he was at Lincoln.
Made less appearances than Aneke over the last 2 seasons combined and if he leaves will be on his third club in 3 years. His time at Lincoln was the exception in an otherwise nothing career, no thanks

He wasn't. He was a headless chicken, a hard worker and a nice bloke. Doesn't make him a great footballer.
He was very effective in the defensive midfield, man to man marking, harass and force mistake role...but that was down to his own chaos.
