This is a genuinely interesting rumour. I am a really big fan of Williams, and would be sad to see him go as I firmly believe there is championship quality in him, but I think we’ll all agree something isn’t quite working for him here. I honestly think if they offer something half decent, we’d be interested in this. I don’t think Bowyer sees him in his strongest 11.
Jonny won’t be here next season. Even if we manage to go up I don’t think Bowyer will want to keep him unless he’s willing to sit on the bench and take a very small contract. With that in mind it might be a case of getting a little bit of cash for him now and moving him on to make space for a player who will play every week. The fact is, as much as I love him he hasn’t been consistently good for us since October 2019, which was a very long time ago. Injuries and then a total loss of form have really washed him out for us. If him leaving allows us to bring in a physical midfielder who can play a bit then that would be a trade up.
Yeah I think Williams leaving is a goer. Decent player but it’s not quite clicked. Bowyer doesn’t use him enough and there’s no chance he wants him longer term. If the offer is there makes sense for both us and him.
i saw enough of stockley in the first 5 minutes the other night to know he is a massive upgrade on bogle
Become a scout then...15 minutes is not enough. George Weah's cousin is the only player to have been judge in 15 minutes and even then Southampton didn't spot he was poor during 2 weeks of training.
Can’t say I’d be too bothered as long as he was replaced. He was good in the promotion season, one of our better players last year but is so inconsistent.

agreed - i like him but he's not being used correctly and would make sense to offload
Like Williams but understandable if he goes, under a salary cap a player who can’t regularly play 90 minutes is a bit of a luxury. If we can bring in a fitter attacking midfielder/winger we’ll probably get better value for money. If that’s a younger player here on a permanent deal even better.
Reckon the Randall seal isn’t dead. Suspect we’ve said £600k or whatever and that’s the final offer. Exeter waiting for as long as possible to see if they get a better offer between now and Monday.
Ahem Dazzler may I refer you to my comment on this thread back in early December:
If we are still looking at a Sorba Thomas type player then Joel Randall at Exeter looks a decent prospect. I'm sure Matt Taylor wouldn't sell us a dud!
Not an "in the know" comment but as the person responsible for alerting Messrs Bowyer and Gallen to the talents of Joel Randall surely that is worth some recognition?
PS If he does sign and does prove to be a dud after all then I might have to deny all knowledge of the lad!
We need some good attacking options if are to lose Washington (injury), Doughty, Smyth and Williams in the transfer window. Sadly for me, the days of JW magic have started to dry up and it will suit him to be part of an attacking and passing team, with tactics.
Losing Williams now would be really sad and would mean we would have to sign another attacking player on a permanent on top of the targets we already want.
I really like Williams and would love him to stay and have a great end to the season. We all know the quality he has.
The thing that worries me is that it’s a Championship club, and a manager who really likes him and already has a good relationship with Jonny from his time on loan at Ipswich a few years ago.
If we're potentially bringing in another winger/wide midfielder, you wonder how much game time Williams will get anyway, other than the odd cameo appearance from the bench
If we can replace Williams even with an average L1 player capable of playing a full game and probably on half the wages it will be a result. We need to move on these half a game sort of guys (apart from Aneke).
SG and Bows made it clear we are shuffling the pack. As I’ve said previously I believe Williams is a player we will let leave if it helps us improve a team that Bows no longer sees JW as a regular starter in.
Just to clarify things, Williams has not been injured this season. I think he came back from international duty in November with a slight problem but that was cleared in a week or so.
In the 7 games he has started this season, we have picked up 18 points.
I personally think we are a better team when he’s playing, alongside players like Shinnie too. If we could find a way of playing Williams, Shinnie, Millar, and Aneke all in the same team, we will win far more than we don’t.
Last season he started 9 of our first 12 games where we picked up 21 points. He then got a meniscus injury and we picked up 7 points from the next 14 until he was back in the squad.
Some have their own opinions and that’s fine. For me, I would love him to stay, I think with a run of games he will shine and push us on to being a much better side, he’s a class above when he does, but that’s my own opinion.
Let's not also forget that we have £X of wages from selling Bogle & sending Smyth back - that is if we are paying any of Smyth's wages which I suspect we are. That gives us a certain category of player to aim for on a perm. Add William's £X of wages to that, you could probably open the door to better players who aren't getting regular game time. I imagine a good chunk of that went on Stockley but if Williams isn't a regular starter, no harm done for me.

It’s so tricky as I agree with all you say Sage and I believe Williams is one of our most able players. I really think that a midfield of Millar, JFC, Shinnie and Williams is so good at this level.
I think (taking the lure of championship football away and basing it purely about Charlton) it’ll come down to whether Bowyer has the time and sees this as an opportunity to perhaps get a player of a Calibre he wouldn’t have previously been able to who would have a longer term future at the club.
I hope if this does happen, it at least opens up an exciting option for the club

Personally think it would be hard to improve the team by getting rid. There is a caveat to this though, the short term to the end of this season I'd be very surprised if by getting rid of Williams we could bring in someone better. In the longer term getting rid and bringing in someone we could tie down to a long term deal and try and negotiate the cap for next season at the same time then it is better for the team.
If Bowyer and Gallen have initiated this it says a lot about their confidence in this season. Business wise and a team more capable for promotion next season then it makes sense.

Are you Omar’s dad?
Are you a writer of stupid questions.
Can you take the Bogle stuff to the Bogle thread? Reading a never ending argument about whether he was really shite or just a bit shite is boring.
Have you a vocabulary that is larger than a couple of crude descriptive adjectives ?
For goodness sake, @addick1956 just let it go, eh?

Couldn’t agree more. It amazes me how some underestimate his effectiveness when he plays.
As with Maddison it’s a great shame the manager can’t see past his own limited view of these flair players.
These are match winning players and, dare I say it, if we get to Wembley again we might just need a spark that these players could give.
if i were williams i would be wanting to go - he's a good player who isn't appreciated or used correctly here so it will suit all if he moves on because we need a better first team, not a better bench

(Yes I am aware he was born just outside Royal Tunbridge Wells)

Interesting to see how we do.
