Most of you know I am a very liberally minded lefty type, I have no problem with Muslims whatsoever. But if I were a moderate Muslim in Marseilles for the next couple of days I would simply avoid the areas where the football fans are - why go along mob handed to a bar (when you don't drink) in order to be offended? If you know you are the type that will fly off the handle if "provoked", stay away.

Absolutely, avoid the areas where they live and frequent because a load of ignorant idiots, whose buffoonery is exasperated at the mere whiff of a tasteless Stella, are in town!!

    It's embarrassing!!
Apologies, I didn't realise that the bar in which the England fans were attacked was in a Muslim area.
Nope, can't see it? Been through my sentence again and analysed in depth, but can't find one mention of the word 'Muslim'!

No need to apologise though Algarve. I know the sun is strong there at this time of the year; even in the early morning!

How the duck did that fire start in the bar?

    Police or locals started it.

Is the first accurate comment you've made so far
    One more than you then.

Can't believe how many people are continuing to have a pop after that police statement was posted? The situation is explained pretty well and football fans like us, most of whom have been tarred with the same brush as violent idiots at some point in our life, are acting like tabloid journalists and just carrying on as if that statement never happened. se9addick seems to have a less hysterical take on it.

I struggle to match that statement with each new footage I see of drunken, shirtless, flabby, inbred English scum acting out in another foreign city.

Think this has come full circle.

The trouble is not solely caused by England fans we know that. Because of their reputation they attract the violent local element of wherever they go. An easy target if you like. There will have been many innocent English fans caught up in the trouble. This is undeniable.

What is also undeniable is that along with the good natured England supporters looking for a few drinks and a pleasant evening there is a hard core of not insignificant numbers who are there because they can get pissed up and have a ruck.

It's this element that embarrass me in the way they conduct themselves and the way they look.

I still contend that you could take the word England out of this post and substitute it for Millwall and the post is still valid.

Marseille is a sh1thole - always has been - also 'home' to the French Foreign Legion in Aubagne which is effectively a suburb of Marseille.

Nah...lovely city, but on the train in you do go through some very rough suburbs...like most large cities.

Surely I mean surely the fact it was a flare in that pub and not on fire (ffs lol) explains the reaction and much more importantly proves that you really really need to open your eyes to the context that surrounds these short videos and stills you see. I can't emphasise enough how the media portrayal rarely tells the full story!

I tend to agree with this. We have a lot of double standards here.

If you go to someone else's manor, be it abroad or you did it at Millwall or Leeds or wherever and was drinking morning to night, out on the streets, singing and chanting, some of which the words may be offensive. It's obvious to anyone with an ounce of common sense, that you will likely attract trouble, especially in Marseille.

I've never followed England away because of this and if I had, I certainly wouldn't hang around in the area, where it is likely to kick off. If you're an England fan you can't 100% avoid trouble, but you can probably do so.

Imagine if the tournament was being held in England & Charlton hosted a game.

Bexleyheath (for example) choc full of pissed up Turks/Germans/Croatians (whoever), morning to night, all over the streets for days. Would it all kick off ?

Yes it would & if it did we'd blame them.

So yes I agree with SHG, the fault is shared and some England fans are the cause by doing the above.

Sorry bout that, can't resist a bit of naked sunbathing sometimes...

  • No idea how many fans we'll have in Marseille but i'd guess it'll be at least 25-30k. I know we often say it's a minority and it obviously clearly is, but if even 3-4% of them kick off (and i'd guess that % will probably be higher), that's still a fair old number causing trouble and they're the ones we're seeing plastered across every paper and news update.
