Was at the training ground earlier dropping off the eldest for CACT summer camp, and Tracey Leaburn was stood on the phone trying to find someone who was lost, or she had a Deliveroo rider gone stray with her MaccieDees breakfast

Probably miles, seeing he hasn’t been there for so long

Subject to work permit is a worry.
Now who was that man from Japan or was it Brazil.

Think he was called Alex. A Japanese-Brazilian footballer.

Permits I don’t believe will be an issue, all the boxes ticked, more of awaiting the official paperwork. The club didn’t want this one out earlier, have extremely high hopes, only negative will carry a high sell on value, they feel can make good money on him
Dare I suggest that this potentially is a big success for Charlie Methven, and the connections he's created with Jamaica?
Ironically he's a player that was not at Mount Pleasant.  His coach in Jamaica contacted us and said "he should be playing in Europe".  Now why did he contact us?  Is it because we are breaking ground over there with the academy?

Charlie and Bert Dawkins went over there to represent the club and clearly made an impression.
I met the owner of Mount Pleasant at the Wyvombe game and she was a lovely lady.  It's a fabulous charity and there are synergies with University of Greenwich planned for the future I believe

For all the shit this club has done in the past dozen years - it really does feel we are turning a corner and it would be REALLY good if the fans could get behind initiatives like the one in Jamaica as well as all the other stuff going on.

Could we be getting our Charlton back?
That's exactly what I was thinking. That the wider connections with Jamaican football we are creating will give us a significant advantage in making signings from there, if we're at a similar level to the rival clubs after players.

Alex played 82 times for Japan in the end.

I'm sure if Liverpool or similar tried to sign him in 2002 they'd have got him no questions asked. Cristian Bolanos was another, bizarrely played for us against the New Zealand national team

David Aparecido da Silva? A striker who I rate. Getting on but could do a job.

    https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alessandro_Santos

“In August 2002, Santos agreed to join English Premier League club Charlton Athletic. But he was denied a work permit by the Home Office because he had not made the minimum number of national team appearances required for players from outside the European Union and returned to Shimizu for the remainder of the season.”

He's from outside the UK so will surely need some sort of work permit regardless

He's also a full International having played eight games for Jamaica now, so cant see it being an issue - If he was someone with zero International experience then it would probably be a slight concern, but doubt we'd be bothering if we knew it would be a problem.

This is where I'm at - I doubt we'd be going to the effort of trying to sign him if we didn't think it would be straightforward for him to get a work permit sorted. Sounds like someone that would easily qualify under the GBE rules anyway as a full international.
I don't know about that, I think we've been here before (can't remember who though. Too many players came and go).
Christian ceballos was on trial. Think he was Costa Rican. He got turned down.
saw him play a pre season friendly v NZ if I remember correctly.
    Bolanos.  Looked mustard
  • Dixon coming in from Arnett Gardens.
They also have a young lad who plays for them with a surname "King" (Amarlie).  We had a trialist for our U18 on tour in Jamaica called King.
    Maybe the same?
Wonder if he is being looked at too.

This Dixon fella sounds exciting. Love a obscure transfer, they'll either be total crap or amazing. I think the squad needs a bit of a livewire to get people exited hopefully this is the fella to do it

Anyone seen the latest X clip from the training ground?

Could only see the backs of the goalies, and one looked like Begovic.
He was not there today .. he been shown round the facilities at sparrow lane but no offer has been discussed as yet ?

If/when he does sign I imagine he's going to be this season's JRS - periods where he looks completely unplayable and tears open defences single-handedly... and also occasional games or series of games where he looks like the young boy against men that he is.

A live wire/wild card option is a very useful thing to have, so fingers crossed he does sign and turns out to be that sprinkle of magic on top of Jones' high effort/intensity pressing style.

Will also be really helpful for him that he has Karoy around to help him settle. Both 19 and breaking into the Jamaican team, it can only be a positive.  Could this also be the first time that one of these international tie-ups (albeit not with the team we’ve linked with, but where we’ve raised our profile on the island) actually gets us a player through the door.  Delighted if this comes off and he joins.

Interesting that we're signing a winger despite playing a wingerless formation, either we think we can turn him into a wingback or perhaps he is being viewed as one for the U21 side for now

maybe he has drunk some Red Bull *

    * Sorry don't think I had contributed a shit joke to this thread yet
Welcome to the club. You’re a raw talent. But a promising start.

Some of these comments 😮 he could be abit special and still so young
Good grief how many chances does he need to score from 5 yards out. He might well have more to his game & only be young but if you can't hit the target from there it's worrying.
  • I remembers getting excited about a young winger from the Caribbean once before, he was hyped a bit and needed a work permit. Christian Bolaonos.

Dixon is now out of the bag… very very highly rated, and a great coup for us, lot of big clubs after him.
Time will tell on that one

Bloody hell give him a break. He’s obviously got something about him and definitely worth a punt. Not as if he’s Alfie’s direct replacement. No disrespect to his Jamaican club but in our environment he should come on in leaps and bounds.

No, if he wants to play for us his spirit must be broken and early. Last thing we need is an outbreak of optimism.

I take it back. It did not take two weeks for the "no end product" comments to start. He's not even signed yet and they've already begun

Very happy to give him a break & wish him well at Charlton if he signs but if that was Casey or Mbick hitting the post, knocking it wide, goalie saving from 5 yards out people would be saying that they're nowhere near the first team & yet we hear that he's coming into the first team squad. In a very short video he looks very raw & more suited to under 21s

Hope the club and the fans don't put too much expectation on his head too soon.

He'll probably need time to settle into the country, possibly easier given he's from Jamaica with all the links between the big island and London, but he's still only 19.

He's also grown up outside academy football.

That might be a good thing as he's not had the unexpected coached out of him but he may also not be as fit as league one players usually are and almost certainly not as fit as Jones wants his players to be.

He may also lack some positional/tactical nous. Not because he's bad but because he's 19 and playing in a different league.

He has played international football so the change may not be that great but I hope he isn't rushed in too early and some games on the bench or at U21 level aren't seen as an indication of failure.
Are there any Ricardo Fuller shirts in the museum for the photoshoot  ;)
