Interesting to see Sunderland fans on that thread Callum posted mentioning Huddersfield as a more likely Neil destination, I know Darren Moore has been under pressure and their American owner has been quite vocal on Twitter - could see Neil there being a good fit.
Based on that forum, Sunderland fans seem to rate Neil as a manager but not as a person. What are the snake comments all about? What did he do?
No Mr nice guy attitude.. but it only works if fans get behind that!
I think Neil is a good manager but the owners need to understand that for this to work we need more than just a good manager. Hopefully they’ve learnt that from the Appleton mess, this club needs a good manager and a personality that will unite the fanbase and get them behind the team to stick with them through the bad patches.
Think of the momentum we had under bowyer between 2018-2020. I’m not saying it has to be him (I’d take him but would probably prefer a few of the other names) but it’s got to be someone who is able to create something similar. I’m guessing Jones did at Luton, Duff at Cheltenham. People will say it doesn’t matter, but I think it does with how disillusioned the fanbase is right now. For this club to be successful I think we need that connection between the fans and manager and players. I’m not sure Neil has done that or has the personality to do so. That’s my only doubt about him and after seeing how things went with Appleton it’s a pretty big doubt

I think it's a huge part of getting this appointment right. This club needs to heal and it needs a big personality to be a figure head for that. That is one thing Holden git and was trying to do, but we also need to someone who is tactically and technically competent in a way that Holden wasn't.

This is a massive part of it , it needs to be someone that's willing to understand the club if they are an outsider and get the fans on board. I think that's where they went badly badly wrong with Appleton and something that I see as vital in the new manager, I never got the impression Appleton ever brought into what makes the club special and ultimately that was a major part of his downfall.
I’d prefer Alex Neil to Nathan Jones in the same way that I’d prefer a kick in the nuts to having my eyes gouged out with a spoon.
A kick in the nuts is surely a hundred times more preferable? One rather painful experience that probably at worst heals up after a few days against a lifetime of having no eyes.

Cawley saying we’re looking at both long and short term options.
Just like when we sacked Holden and seemed to be approaching and interviewing so many different managers with different styles, it just looks like we don’t have a plan
Scott should know exactly what type of manager he wants, what style of football/set up he wants us to play and then just simply pick the best long term option that fits it. Surely that’s the sensible thing to do
You just know that long term option would also have been available before we appointed Michael Appleton, you just know it.

Just got to hope the club have learned from their Appleton mistake.
I don’t know enough about Neil so I might be wrong, he’s definitely a good manager for this level but I just hope the board are considering the other side rather than ignoring it like they appeared to with the Appleton appointment

Agreed. Put Maddison and Vince in charge as joint managers. With Headphones Norm as their assistant to tell them all the latest scores of our rivals.
The delay is because they can’t yet find a way to draft the announcement to account for their choice that doesn’t obviously conflict with the PR nonsense when we got MA.
It’s going to take a lot of redrafts to get there and ultimately justify Curtis being the man for now. 😉
We can’t have Warnock, I’ve ear marked him to appear in an ITV show called Neil & Roy, Tuesday nights 9pm, just after Doc Martin or something like that, Autumn going into winter.
I even wrote to the Head of Content at ITV to float it
Dear Rosemary,
As Head of content for ITV, I imagine you get inundated with approaches for TV Shows from independent producers, writers and have other creatives who are keen to showcase their idea to the Great British public.
I am sure there is a filtering system, so I hope you don’t mind me getting in touch directly, but I wanted to share an idea for a TV series, called Neil and Roy.
Neil Warnock and Roy Hodgson are two of Britain’s most enduring, successful football managers, who have led long careers, culminating in the England job for Roy, and no less of an achievement, Neil’s many, many clubs across the Premier and Football League.
I have seen with great success, Breaking Dad, with Bradley Walsh and his Son, Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon on The Trip, and Stephen Fry travel across the USA in a Black Taxi on the BBC in the late 2000s. I think that a show built on a similar premise, featuring both Neil and Roy, could be a ratings winner for ITV, and give the British public a heart warming treat on a Tuesday evening in autumn as the nights draw in.
Neil and Roy will, like Coogan and Brydon, travel Britain, visiting market towns, and middle England villages and shires, indulging in local pastimes, and sharing anecdotes about what they see, and moments of their lives. This will not be a show recanting the memories of their football management careers, more an opportunity to let them bring their understated charisma to local fairs, regattas, and other local traditions that are the backbone of this great nation.
Think cheese rolling, but specific to traditions of villages in the Peak District, The Yorkshire Dales and beyond. Cream teas, local delicacies and regional cuisine, all washed down with a lovely brew before Neil and Roy head off to bed in a local b&b after a long day.
I am approaching you in the first instance, because this feels like an ITV show. I picture it at 9pm, Tuesday evenings, just after something like Doc Martin. I believe it will charm the likes of the WASPI women and the people that fawn over the John Lewis Christmas advert, and give you an edge over the Beeb.
I do not wish for any ownership rights, and hereby pass over all intellectual property in relation to Neil and Roy to ITV, but perhaps you could see your way to a small fee for bringing you the idea - we can of course discuss this in more detail.
I will close by saying that I don’t think Neil & Roy will be up for tie ins with Ant & Dec or The Masked Singer, or willing to go to the Jungle should the show take off, but may be open to sharing more about the show on the sofas of This Morning (providing the Philip Schofield debacle is dead and buried).
I will also add that of the two, Neil is likely to be more affable and approachable to production staff, and given Roy has a bit of an edge to him, there may be instances where he lashes out at runners on the show when he gets tired and filming goes beyond 8pm, he is 76 years old after all.
I remain at your disposal should you wish to explore further, and I trust you will give you this the due consideration it warrants. Opportunities like this only come along every so often. Seize it.

Precisely.
That’s why Jones is the pick of the runners and riders
I certainly think the whole club needs healing. A kind of Chris Powell figure that gets the club, the fans and the players but back in the real world we’re not going to get that figure. The immediate problem is the possibility of us being flushed into the fourth division. I’ll take whoever as long as they clear us of that possibility and have the ability to get us promoted next season. As far as I’m concerned he can be Victor Meldrew and Droopy all rolled into one. At present we’re up shit creek we need someone with football management ability with Mr nice guy as a optional extra.

All 3 are mates of mine
But to put them altogether would be fucking hilarious. Vince is in Blackpool ad we speak
I feel like replacing a bald misery who isn't that bothered about connecting with the fanbase with another one would be a particularly bold choice. Neil does not spark joy for me

If people thought Appleton just stood on the side then wait till you see Neil. Stoke fans are loving their new manager as he’s showing more enthusiasm and more attacking football.
Just Appleton part 2
He's calmed down then. This is my abiding memory of Alex Neil at Hamilton v Dumbarton
" Neil was dismissed for a moment of madness when he appeared to butt Gilhaney with six minutes to go and Accies trailing 2-1.
The 10 men copped a thrashing – their first defeat in 12 matches – and fell from top spot to two points behind new leaders Dundee with just one game left."
He has a good mix of bonkers and arrogance, desire, drive and belief in his abilities. He instills belief in his players and he’s completely absorbed by the process.
His tactical understanding is very good, clearly analyses the opposition, has more than one match plan and will adjust quickly when needed.
With Nathan Jones’ abilities and the players we have now, I absolutely believe we won’t go down!
I actually like that he went to Southampton when on a good thing with Luton because he was ambitious and wanted to test himself tactically against the best managers. (he’s mentioned this more than once before)
He did a great job with Luton, twice getting them to punch above their weight and as well as he’d done, Stoke and Saints offered a sizeable step up regarding an all round size of club.
So does Charlton, potentially, in most things apart from League position. Money is being spent on better players, we’re now talking with a better calibre of manager, have better facilities and better financial backing than that of Luton (pre-premier league - I believe our wage bill was about £2m more than theirs last season).
He may just be bonkers & arrogant enough to climb the leagues again but with enough time and support, not need to jump ship to fulfil his ultimate ambition. As fans we desperately need it, it’s been far too long! The owners - they need him to realise it, to fulfil their financial targets.
It just feels like the right opportunity at the right time!
With the kind of people we are being linked with it’s going exactly as I feared ….. It NEVER works bringing in a Jones / Neill etc character that on paper you think will be good. Our club is broken and Charlton success has always coincided with that special magic in the stands and around the whole place.

Yes, we are underachieving by a country mile..
Yes when we are poor we are terrible poor.

Perhaps through the medium of interpretative dance.
Rowett is a good option though!!
