Along with the MG we have put in bids for CM who we have been liked with previously, plus a winger who is 23 years old, has been extremely highly rated, but had a couple of years dip, it is hoped we can get him going. If we can, would be an outstanding signing.
Ian Poveda? Worked with Appleton at Blackpool last season

Think you've nailed it. Fits the bill perfectly and obviously played for Appleton.
The fact Asiimwe is our only real full back cover, we have had to call Deji back from loan to cover Ness, TC is one of our 3 wingers and Kanu was recalled from loan as well tells me that our squad is to small.
Not saying that it is Holden’s fault, as I am sure perhaps he was told to rely on youth to cover gaps, and Scott clearly had a say in that - but he did say that’s what he wanted a smaller squad.
This window will be very busy, the idea is to get as many bedded this season for next year. But let’s see what happens. Action speaks loud than words!
Where have we heard this before?!
Thanks for dropping on what you know Dubai. It’ll be one thing signing some ‘good’ players but if the wrong man is at the helm then it could all be pointless as we change him further down the line.
Lot of this now is down to Holden, he wanted a young small squad.. now we have a few injuries, Appleton left to pick it up.
That is almost as embarrassing as Appletons excuses yesterday.
The size of the squad isn’t the problem, it’s the quality of the players that Andy Scott brought in. Even with Holden out of the picture he brought in young players that weren’t good enough
All most as embarrassing as this comment… squad size is a huge issue.. 2 or 3 injuries and having to put in over hyped Acedemy players…
If Scott thought it was a problem why didn’t we sign more players? Holden was practically begging for signings the whole of August because he’d been left short. Another problem is signing injury prone players, and we have been quite unlucky that the injuries have been concentrated into 2 positions rather than spread across the team
Scott had a chance to add experience if he wanted to, but instead he brought in the worst collection of loans we’ve seen. If he wanted a squad with more experience, why did he bring in 4 loans that were inexperienced and not good enough? Holden wasn’t there so you can’t blame him for that one
Scott thought our squad was good enough, that’s why he sacked Holden for underperforming. And when Appleton joined he was saying we had a good squad that was underperforming and Scott was saying we’d be judging ourselves against the top 6 from now on. They’ve changed their tune since…
I refuse to get drawn into the whole 'things might actually get better' mindset because I no longer have the energy but a good transfer window paying low fees on good players whose contracts don't have long left to run on them or larger fees for real standouts is the best thing the club can do at this point. The season is dead just as soon as we get enough wins to convincingly ease away from the relegation spots so bringing in the right players now gives them time to bed in. Oxford are a really good example of what careful team building can do. They've been challenging for a while but they've held onto their excellent players and slowly brought better ones in over time. They signed Brannagan in 2018 and convinced him to sign a new contract (on bonkers money but whatever) and that's meant they've always grown because new good players augment the old ones. We've given our decent players 2-3 year deals and been unable to convince them to stay so every good player we have never meets another one and we stay treading water. We'll likely see it with Dobson and CBT and probably lose Leaburn and any other youth player who shows a bit like we always have and we'll see our decent players playing Premier League or Championship football elsewhere.
Easier said than done but the trick is to identify the good players and give them 3.5 year deals now and then build on them in the summer. It's also a good idea to sign players who do what suits an overall style, not just what Appleton wants or we'll end up with a hodgepodge again. I suspect none of that will happen and Appleton will get his bruisers to go with Holden's kids and then whoever comes in next can get water voles or whatever he wants and we'll repeat. In the meantime though, Scott should make sure he follows the Sandgaard approach to contract offering but in reverse. Charlie Kirk and Chuks Aneke 4+ year contracts? BAD. Dobson and CBT 2 year contracts? BAD. Maybe 'do things well' is obvious advice but it wouldn't hurt to try would it?
To add to the above. Scott appointed Holden, surely what he wants a squad to look like was discussed in his interview? This mess all goes back to Scott, he’s appointed 2 poor managers and signed a load of rubbish. If it wasn’t for Holden and Storey bringing in Jones and May imagine where we’d be now?
I hope Gillesphey is just centre back cover and not also competition with Edun, need a real attacking full back. Ethan Bristow would’ve been my choice but he’s already gone Stockport.
we need 2 first choice full backs, neither Watson or Edun are good enough - both are poor defensively (especially Edun) and neither are good going forward
Need to remember (sorry if this sounds harsh) that Holden was a very limited manager and a bit of a people pleaser/ yes-man.
No manager in the world would be happy with a smaller squad and younger one at that. A pure recipe for disaster, I imagine he said that to keep the board happy as he was given a golden ticket getting a job here.
I am amazed how often I see fans suggest he gets jobs elsewhere and find it rather telling he hasn't landed a gig yet. I would take things Holden said with a pinch of salt.

What position do you think we would be in the table if we had a good manager?
And if Jones and May are good enough players to keep us from a relegation battle as I believe you are suggesting where do you think we would be if we got two new players of similar quality in?
I only ask as it feels like we all make very simplistic observations all the time, but in reality I just feel like there is so much complexity going on.

Passing the buck of course. Squad building isn't down to Holden.
But sure saves Scott and Methven from any kind of criticism, which you have a habit of doing since they've taken over (and before too).
Go look at the interviews back end of last season… Holden was the one coming out saying he wanted a younger smaller squad…
"“We’ve got our targets” said Holden. “Andy Scott (technical director) and the recruitment team will be dealing with them type of things."
"“We’re working as hard as we can. Of course we’d like to have more players in but, at the same time, it’s important we keep going. We’ve got a period of time in the transfer window. What’s most important is what we look like at the end of the transfer window, making sure we have got a squad that can really attack the rest of this League One season.”"
Dated 19th August. He knew what he'd been stuck with. Sound like a man happy with his 'younger smaller squad'?
Surely, with the season all but dead as the proverbial parrot, Scott should be getting players in now that can gel over the next 4 months and then add a few in the summer. A statement of intent needs to be put down, to try, and it'll be hard, to entice people to buy ST"s for next season. So let's get half a dozen quality experienced and fit players in NOW, and try to get some positivity back in the club. If he can't do that....then he needs to fuck off! So does the geezer from Plymouth fit the bill? I know sod all about him!
we need 2 first choice full backs, neither Watson or Edun are good enough - both are poor defensively (especially Edun) and neither are good going forward
Both of those signed whilst Scott was in the door at SE7
The only two decent ones in the door since Scott’s 2nd go last January at transfers is L Watson and Appleton will not give him a start plus Chem Campbell who is finally getting a run
Maybe Wolves had a word with Scott to say play him or we recall him. Your choice

Sorry to play devils advocate, but if you’re just picking quotes, you do know we got 5 players in after the 19th right?
He mentions that the most important thing is how we look at the end of the window. Do we have any quotes from him then?
Need to remember (sorry if this sounds harsh) that Holden was a very limited manager and a bit of a people pleaser/ yes man.
Exactly. It was such a disappointment when his shortcoming were revealed, because he seemed to connect very well with fans, (although perhaps tried too hard?) He did warn us in that early interview where he said something along the lines of ‘I don’t do tactics’.

I don’t think we’d be much better off tbh, the 2 managers have both had their hands tied behind their backs. At least in Holden’s run he was changing things around and trying to find a way to get the best out of what he had to work with, Appleton has shown no sign of that. Appleton isn’t the biggest problem we have, far from it, but I just don’t have any faith that he is part of the solution either
I don’t think 2 players of Jones/May quality is enough, that would probably be enough to steer us safely into 10th-12th with players returning from injury also. If we are serious about next season we probably need 6-8 new players of that level
we need 2 first choice full backs, neither Watson or Edun are good enough - both are poor defensively (especially Edun) and neither are good going forward
Watson was MOM yesterday he was excellent ,, Edun is very good player but was not helped again yesterday with CBT not tracking the full back and leaving Edun with two men to mark …
we finally have two very good young full backs even wing backs if MA plays his favoured 3 at the back .. who will get better and better

Holden came in as part of the SE7 group (Scott, Warwick, Rodwell) back in December 2022
Sandgaard and Storrie were in control when they gave Holden an extension on his contract back in March

Tedic, Abankwah, L Watson, T Watson and C Campbell.
How many of them actually have added something to our season? Maybe one.
Get 3-5 of real quality this window then the same in the early summer and we might be able to start next season properly rather than 10 games in with shite loans and freebies that no one else wanted

Holden's sacking was announced on 27 August so 8 days later and had been speculated to have happened before that.
So he wasn't here at the end of the window to comment but Scott, who is said to have overall control, was.

He mentions that the most important thing is how we look at the end of the window. Do we have any quotes from him then?
He did warn us in that early interview where he said something along the lines of ‘I don’t do tactics’.
I don’t think 2 players of Jones/May quality is enough, that would probably be enough to steer us safely into 10th-12th with players returning from injury also. If we are serious about next season we probably need 6-8 new players of that level
we finally have two very good young full backs even wing backs if MA plays his favoured 3 at the back .. who will get better and better
Andy Scott created this mess. My bet is it will probably get messier.
And then I suppose it will be blamed on Appleton
Sandgaard and Storrie were in control when they gave Holden an extension on his contract back in March

How many of them actually have added something to our season? Maybe one.
Im not saying you are wrong, but the only actual evidence we have from Holden’s mouth is he wanted a smaller squad. I know he did that interview recently - does he mention anything about what he thinks about the squad he was given then?
I agree with this on the whole.
Holden is not responsible for the summer, Scott is. You know, the man that appointed Holden in the first place.
"What’s most important is what we look like at the end of the transfer window, making sure we have got a squad that can really attack the rest of this League One season.”"" - Sounds to me like he didn't think his squad was good enough to me. He was proved correct.
So he wasn't here at the end of the window to comment but Scott, who is said to have overall control, was.
