Comments

  • Have to say very good interview by Andy Scott and a couple or comments clearly aimed at the takeover ..
  • Very good interview.....the contract makes sense converting to a rolling one.......I also get why DH wanted to trim the squad. A lot of common sense there rather than the TS fed BS......eased my concerns a little

When you don't make Chelsea's 18 man squad you pick up 200k ish and  more to soften the blow of having to watch your team mates for 90+ minutes while signing autographs and having selfies taken.
Hard life. Same at most of the top 8 clubs in Premier.

At Charlton we couldn't afford the luxury of having senior players not involved.

In the real world of League 1 football and at Charlton, Andy Scott was brought in with a double remit I believe:

    1. To trim the squad as there were too many so Henry, Mitchell, Kanu etc can make the bench. Maybe not all at the same time.
Andy Scott has just said what I thought at 11pm on the 31jan.
Plus helps Thomas Sandgaard monthly bill be lower.

2.To just bring in a few players:
LB Penney, CB Hector,  Midfield Kilkenny,
    The others didn't quite happen.

Edwards, wide forward and Luke Plange, possibly with the Palace lad they wanted him to move away from home unlike Rak Sakyi.  Gwion Edwards wanted to go home to Wales but his Dale Stephens Satnav took him to Scotland !

Kane injury was unfortunate on his debut after starting well.

The players brought in January for Cafc were always going to be problematic and questions marks about them as we are mid table.

Heard Andy Scott's video and he has a difficult job pleasing Sandgaard, Holden and the fans/critics.
    First Team Players
    GK: Woolacott, AMB,
    RB: Clare, Sess, Kane, Egbo
    LB: Penny
    CB: Thomas, Hector, Inniss, Ness
    CDM: Dobbo, Kilkenny
    CM: Payne, Morgan, Fraser
    Wide: JRS, CBT,
    ST: Bonne, Leaburn, Aneke

    Academy:
    Harness
    Campbell
    Henry

24 players: 21 first team, 3 academy (2 academy in the first team count to beef it up)
6 prone to injuries: Egbo, Hector, Aneke, CBT, Inniss, Sess
6 currently not fit/injured or managing knocks: Egbo, Hector, Kane, Woolacott, Sess, Aneke
18 players fit, only 1 injured player likely to be fully fit any time soon is a GK, 2 of those are injuries waiting to happen in CBT and Inniss

If you lose JRS/CBT and one of Leaburn or Bonne, you have no attacking subs to make
If you lose Ness, you have no reliably fit CBs

To get a squad of 18 from the above, you will need to pick 2 of: Sess, Thomas, Hector, Kilkenny. 1 of which is managing a knock, 3 of which have played very few minutes this season.

Scott can dress it up as he likes, the squad is very thin. It will be thinner still when Inniss and Stockley have a dust up and get each other sent off in a week's time.

    Is he?
  • I'm usually very doom and gloom but I personally think we are stronger than we were on January 1st. Yes we should've got a couple more in but its a decent enough squad for 2nd half of the season with nothing to play for.

Never sure how comprehensive transfermarkt is, though it often seems to have a lot of information and this is what is there for his injury history:

    https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/michael-hector/verletzungen/spieler/157490

The only mention of an injury on his wikipedia page is in 2011 when he was on loan at Dundalk. So I am getting the impression he is definitely not prone to injuries.
  • Hector said in his interview that he's never really been injured, but that shouldn't take away from what I think is a fair post.

I agree. I’m not too bothered by EOC going coz I don’t think he’s that good. Just an average 3rd division player. In fact all of our players are average 3rd division players. Just think we’re a bit short up front and could’ve done with another striker

Transfer markets injury history page is awful, it shows Inniss missed two weeks in 2014, and nothing else.

But I googled it, after I posted, and can't see anything at all other than he missed two weeks in 2016 amd had a case of the shits in 2017.

Hard to be injured when you never play.
He had a constant run from 2014-2020, it’s only been the last couple of years, including a season in the prem, where he’s been well down the pecking order. If he was capable of playing more often at those levels for Fulham, he wouldn’t be here.

the big question though is why has he been without a club since May 2022?
I know, it’s a fair question. The positive is he’s been training with better teams than us, but it is a slightly odd one. In fact Wednesday signed Flint (a good player admittedly) whilst Hector was on trial, which is a concern. If we get a 60% Hector, we’re getting a good league 1 player but with Thomas as the only other option there’s suddenly a lot of pressure on Ness to keep up his good work.

Perhaps holding out for a bigger championship club and the offers never came?

Could be multiple reasons, doubt he is so hard up that he had to take the first offer given to him.

In its self its not a red flag.  I think we are all about concerned by signing players who have had long term injuries or not played for years but as he was on the bench a lot for Fulham for 2 years I assume he was "match fit" then.

I think the points you make are valid Pudds and the thin squad, as you quite rightly state, is exasperated by the injury prone players in the squad. We know Kane will be back but has to be managed, Sess' is fit but once again has to be managed. The point I think you missed is the versatility of the current squad. Clare for instance can and has played in the middle three, Kane, when fit, can occupy both full back positions even though predominately right sided, but he can and has played as a right winger. In terms of the front three, Bonne is clearly the middle man up top but Leaburn has played there and done very well and I would suggest that Leaburn could also replace JRS, as can CBT or Campbell if needs be. I'm ever hopeful that if new owners do arrive, they send Anke to a top specialist and get to the root of his problem. I think with 19 games left there is enough in the squad, if it was 46 games there wouldn't be.

Perhaps you could tell Chuks Aneke that.

Hector has 341 senior appearances by the way. I wouldn't have signed him either but that's a silly response.

Hard not to like the bloke.

I guess the only question unanswered, having been told money was available, why wasn't it used.

Of course they may have tried but as we all know but forget very easily when the window shuts, it's not that simple, is it?

Wow, how do you know this?

  • You can't be seriously asking that?
We didn't spend a penny on transfer fees
And cut the squad by 5 or 6 players net
And the £600k pocketed on Stockley and O'Connell plus the Man U gate receipts will be pocketed by Sandgaard.

Albeit he is within his right to.

But definitely there is no money available to be spent by our current owner.

He (allegedly) hasn't even paid the rent......
