Should have kept BWP and brought in a decent midfielder. That is where the problem lies.
The problem lies in us being skint. Borassic. No money.
I don't know much about football but why Callum Harriot was ignored by most players after he came on I have no idea. Possibly because his nutmeg of one of the Burnley got the first little cheer in about 15 minutes when it happened.
Until recently I always thought of CP as a very sensible and logical thinker, but some of his decisions lately have really baffled me. It started with the Sheff Weds no subs fiasco and has now decended into what seems like desperation stakes. Question: When is an attacking formation, not an attacking formation? Answer: when you waste one of your midfielders protecting a defence that doesn't need protecting. We have a decent team, but they are now all looking like poor players due to silly tactics that has caused a big drop in confidence. The midfield will look poor because they don't have the movement up front or out wide. It's time to go back to basics. 442 at home with real wingers, Green on the right, Waggy on left where he can cut in onto his right foot. 2 up front where we need pace (Haynes). Push Wilson into central midfield where we need a driving force and extra energy. Hughes to come back into midfield for his experience and nous. Powell has got plenty of options in this squad, but he needs to start thinking straight and stop trying to be a master tactician. Keep it simple CP, 442 at home and 451 away. Stop using Waggy as a scapegoat, he's a valuable part of the team and needs to be playing.

Basically we have a shit squad no formation or amount of tinkering is gonna turn them into half decent championship players They have outperformed their natural ability to get us where we are in the table Everyone has a load of different suggestions and whatever SCP does is no good because most of the players are pony Burnley were awful got their goal and sat back , just like we attempted to against wednesday , palace and birmingham , it worked for burnley cos they were up against one of the most pathetic ,weak gutless onslaughts you're likely to see and the apathy and non passion of the fans as we threw the kitchen plug at them said it all . Good turnout from the london based burnley in the middle of a shit run and they must have been happy to be against our powder puff crew ... Obikack was horrendous , let's hope he turns it around but whatever he does it won't change that performance ...miserable
10% 7th-12th ........ 65% 13th-21st .... 25% the bottom 3 be afraid be very afraid
Remember the last time our form was like this? The board realised something had to change, we bought a new team in the summer and won the league the following season. You see, our home record this season is all part of CP's plan to extract cash from the board: Lose at home so the directors see how badly we need players, but win away so we stay up. He's clever that Chris Powell.
Just seen the goal again. Wow. No one would have got to that.
The whole team need to get back to basics. Pass to your own players, keep it on the deck, put tackles in that count, have shots at goal. You don't have to have pace if you can do those basic things. Using proper wingers would help too. Been saying that most of the season.
cant believe so many doom mongers are talking about relegation
granted i havent seen how badly we are playing first hand... but there are 9 teams below us.... 3 wins out of 10 will see us comfortably safe
and we have seen that we can win games
relegation? come onnnn!?!?
You need to get yourself down to a home game my friend next one is none other than millwall at home so get yourself down there and see what we are like you will be very impressed.
Just want this season to finish. Started of ok but gradually got worse and the dire football we play is somehow getting worse and worse each week. There's not been one game were we have actually dominated a game and outplayed the opposition.
I don't see why people were moaning and booing, surely they'd all settle for mid-table in the first season back, but alas, these could be the ones who expect us to win every week and be up there around the autos. They're deluded. If they hate it that much then they don't have to come and they might as well give up their season ticket and go watch Fulham or something.
I feel sorry for Paddy Powell, he has been right stitched up, he thought he bought shit loads of grass seed, and some bastard sold him bird seed, never seen so many birds on the valley pitch.
Due to a unique querk of fate known as 'geography', I get to see more away games than home. In fact, I have not seen CAFC lose away and have watched some decent performances (Birmingham, Wolves, Ipswich, Watford etc). However, I have only seen one win at the Valley (Peterborough - and yes, I know there have not been many) and yesterday sounds like another pretty dire state of affairs!
So, here's the thing, what is it that is really causing the massive disconnect between home and away form? How big a part does psychology/mindset actually play? Let's face it, in the main, the players who play at home are the same players who step on the pitch when on our travels.
Is the 'pressure' of playing in front of the home crowd too much for some? There will certainly be a greater desire in the changing room to perform at home which in turn will naturally induce pressure. Are some players/the manager just not coping with the greater expectancy at home and it has now got to the point where some are actually afraid afraid to try and perform? Mentally maybe the pressure is off when away; they just need to examine why that is and try to replicate it at the Valley? After all 'People are People'!
The squad is lacking any quality in depth and we have no natural leader. I have been watching this current group of players since the start of last season and with the exception of Solly and Wiggins I doubt any of them would get anywhere near a team good enough to be challenging for promotion from the Championship. Certainly we get decent performances out of the likes of Morrison, and Fuller and some others but all have been patchy in quality. Kermorgant is a warrior but won't ever get anywhere near being prolific. Therein lies the problem. We are a bottom third quality team which is exactly where we are and will finish. My biggest disappointment is that SCP hasn't seemed to realise that given what he has to work with we should by now be absolutely clear about how we need to play in order to get the best out of the squad. I think that does smack of tactical nievity. The fear is that our away form which has been nothing short of baffling will take a dip and the ten points we need will seem like a very difficult task given the way we are currently performing. Next four games are huge.

Not this old chestnut again. Most Charlton fans don't have high expectations.
When something good is happening on the pitch, there is excellent support, the covered end give great vocal support. On occassion, against Cardiff help turn the game.
I think that the Charlton crowd is pretty tolerant of some dire home performances and an appalling pitch.
The dire pitch which has a threadbare and limited investment that mirrors the threadbare state of the team and its limited investment.
Chris Powell, I support but makes mistakes. With the lack of quality in the team, mistakes are exposed by the better quality n the championship. When CP makes mistakes, he mostly appears to learn. Chris Powell, I give some tolerance to as he is a great man, Charlton through and through and does build a team that generally plays with spirit.
I don't see any better sane, quality managers, who would want to mange the team with the current levels of investment - Nigel Adkins for example.
The players played with a lack of confidence yesterday and this may be related to a poor starting formation, lack of quality in the team and a terrible pitch. The Charlton crowd with Chris Powell as manager was tolerant of another poor home performance. If there was another manager, the crowd would display a much greater level of unhappiness.
Also, if footballers can't deal with the limited expectations of Charlton supporters, then why are they doing the job ?
I see why people are linking our home form to pressures of playing in front of a potential hostile crowd. However unless during the 3 home games I have happened to miss the entire crowd started booing, calling for Powell's resignation and singing "you're not fit to wear the shirt", the players have not experienced much if any hostility from the crowd. Yes small pockets, but certainly not throughout.
I sit in the lower north E block and I only hear one or two people booing and if the players can hear those one or two voices then we have found the reason why they are playing bad. They are listening out for negativities rather than concentrating on football. Our fans at home are embarrassingly quiet compared to away support. Very little singing that can be heard throughout. The ground used to shake before the upper north was opened. Upper north certainly more vocal than the rest of the ground though, but nowhere near what it used to be like.
The fans at home have been surprisingly supportive considering the performances. I put that down to people not wanting to turn on Powell. I don't agree with booing, but I haven't seen any real pressure of that nature on the players. Maybe its the lack singing/chanting thats pressuring them. Personally I think players are just looking for something else to blame other than their own effort. The fans, the pitch, the ref, weather, someone in family enclosure farted. The pitch is poor but it doesn't seem to stop opposing teams from passing the ball.
The players whoever go out there will get my support as long as they make an effort. If we battle and lose to a better team I can accept that. What I can't accept is poor effort, lack of passion and simply dreadful passing ability. The players are good enough on paper for a midtable finish and at the start of the season I would and still will take that. It doesn't mean that as a fan I can't be angry/disappointed when we play poorly, or make comments on here when I feel we have not put the effort in. This year will be my last year of having a season ticket (having had one for 20 years) for a few seasons because I will become a dad in a few weeks and due to that and work sadly I won't be able to go as much next season, though my aim s to go to at least 5 times if not more. I'd like to leave on a high and can't wait for the day I take my kid to a game with his/her grandad as well.
I was proud of Charlton last season and hope to be proud again before the season is complete.

Kind of agree but results would suggest he has cracked it away from home, so he surely can't be THAT tactically naive. Despite his last poor performance I really feel we have nobody in midfield looking for the ball when stephens is out. Have to remember as well that there were three enforced changes for yesterday's game. Really need at least 3 new first team players next season, two midfielders and a goalscorer.
Better than last week which is not saying much. CP clutching at straws --but he has to try something. Cracking goal by Austin I was surprised there wasnt more booing The pitch is affecting the way we play Not sure about the 20K crowd but in the lower North there was a huge amount of free tickets about. Are we in the shit ? yes and iff you dont think we are then i suggest you look at the way we "played" in the last two games and the way we have set up to play. I fear for us next season even if we do stay up.
I think BDL should change his pre-match..........." now you know what you have to do , get behind the boys & make some noise" and aim it at the team - the fans can't make any noise if the players aren't perfoming on the pitch.
Small point, perhaps, but I don't think we need the (fantasy) attendance announced as the ball is being crossed into the opposition box.
Airman Brown in sly dig shocker.
If you were still there you would no doubt be trumpeting the crowd as a triumph of you marketing masterplan. It's really getting all a bit tedious now. Must be gutting for you that the club hasn't collapsed since you've been binned.
Wow, only one of you sounding bitter there. Were you not aware of the cries of derision as the attendance was announced yesterday?
I agree we don't have the greatest squad by then why make it worse by playing people out of position? A centre half in centre mid, a centre mid out on the right and our best chance of a goal wide left! The subs come on, we have players in their natural positions and we improve...
I'm in no way calling for Powell's head, but this is starting to remind me of when he took over and we dropped the league like a stone...
I didn't think we were as bad as is being suggested. For only having 3 players in midfield for much of the game, we dominated possession (58:42), had 14 shots and their keeper made at least two excellent saves.
I don't think the 4-3-3 worked, but I admire Powell for giving it a go. 4-5-1 or 4-4-2's hardly been consistently successful at home either. We had three key players out - Solly, Stephens and Kermorgant - and I very much doubt Dervite would have started in that formation if Stephens was fit. We didn't seem to get the rub of what little green there is on that pitch either - every loose ball seemed to drop to them.
I wholeheartedly agree that we lack a [midfield] leader, but Powell can't magic one out of nowhere. He can only play the players at his disposal. In case it's escaped everyone's attention, he's tackling a Championship season with a League One squad. Not his fault he's been so held back in the transfer market.
If anyone expects us to do anything better than mid-table obscurity they're in cloud cuckoo land, so we're probably going to lose more than we win. All that really matters is that we're still a Championship side at the end of the season.
We're going to need to avoid two losses in the next two games if it's not going to be an uncomfortable run in, but we're as capable of winning both as we are of losing them. Keep the faith, yesterday really wasn't as bad as I recognise it feels.
The Charlton owners need to drop the selling price of the club and sell to new owners, who hopefully will not be from a mass mudering regieme or dodgy Portsmouth type businessman with no money.
Even a mass murdering regime is a little bit tempting at the moment.
Charlton fans put the bar high when it comes to prospective new owners. Unfortunatley, Mother Theresa types don't usually invest in football clubs. I hope that we don't pick apart the new investment to the degree that it doesn't happen. We are Charlton and it is preferable that new owners have not murdered or imprisoned half the population. I don't think that is too much to ask.
Steady legit, long terms owners is what the club needs.
To be fair TJ / MS do the business side competently enough and stick to a budget. Even the non communication communicates what they are about. Charlton are being kept afloat, I acknowledge that. Though, It does appears that the funds to push on appear to have run out. (I am not assuming that there are new funds for next year, and we may lose a couple of players). This explains the quality of loans. I know as business men they want to make money, but the strategy of cheap loans, and drop down premiership players is not going to get Charlton promoted or make them any money. It may not be enough to keep Charlton in this division in the mid term. Asking for / agreeing to a realistic asking price is the right thing to do.
When TJ / MS / Other sell the club, I hope that the new owners, have some money to properly be able to keep the club financially stable, keep good accounts (don't overborrow) and be able to fund a push for the premiership, run the club efficiently and communicate well with the fans and have some understanding of the club, community engagement, and positive traditions.
I can dream. I need to after the last two performances and most of the football, I have seen at the Valley this season.
On the plus side, Andy Hughes is fit enough to make the bench, he should soon be ready to start. That might help with our lack of leadership, and we would at least have some experience in the centre mid rather than lumping a natural CB out of position.

Not good enough to be a winger in this league and not good enough to be a CM
