  • I was right at the front and the old bill were friendly and tried explaining the plan but the surge come and they panicked and just starting whacking out.
  • Fanny,

I would like you to raise it at the fans forum and for it to be raised at the Safety Advisory Group meeting also.

Feel free to use my comments or to take a copy.

    I'm busy making notes.

No grief at all exiting the main stand :-)

  • Agree with this. I can only comment on my experience, but I had no problem with the way the Police handled things. I certainly didn't see anything excessive from them.

Minor inconvienience but nothing more than was to be expected.

But the problem is, it could have ( and should have ) been handled a lot better and differently IF the Police wanted too. The plan by the Police was to get us all to leave by one route, by turning right out of the ground and along that bloody silly little residential road. I was told that I would be able to turn left down one of the side roads back in the direction of the ground....the ones blocked by the riot vans! Why didn't they use the sign wishing us a safe trip home to explain what was happening? If i knew what was happening, i might not have objected as much as I did if I had known what was going on,but i didn't!

Remember, what might have been a minor inconvenience to us certainly wasn't to those poor sods living in that road who had parked cars thinking they would have been safe, or who had their gardens damaged or fences smashed. Yes I know it was our supporters, but if we were just allowed to walk down that road straight away it would never have happened!
  • I saw one bloke get bit in the hand by one of the police dogs and I also saw a young bloke taken down by 6 police who forced him into a fence which then broke under the weight of all of them. Do we think the police will pay for the damage they caused?

So the same thing happened in december. No lessons learned by the police then!

Bloke next to me (and next to my 11 year old son) was attacked by one of their dogs - it only got the front of his coat so his clothes were torn and covered in "dog gob" but no physical harm as far as he could tell at the time.

I can't believe that anyone who was there would defend the strategy or tactics the police employed to get us away from the stadium. Most people would equally not defend the action of a lot of our supporters. We could have just gone on our way and it would have been a lot less dramatic than it was.

I'd be interested to know what resources it took to do that - the Belfast wall, every side road blocked, the high street looking like a major terrorist incident had occured. Who pays ? Hopefully Palace.

Hard to tell but must have been 300 OB there, a wall, 50 vehicles, 15 horses and 20 dogs - I could be very wrong though as they were everywhere.

Seriously huge balls up by the police which will affect us all going to future games - I am not sure it would have been any different if we had won. As someone else said, they didn't "build the wall" and draft in riot police when palace scored their second. It was always going to be their plan.

Does our FIO not liaise with theirs and come up with a plan between them ?

    Fair bit of overtime though.
  • lets hope we get them in the cup next year 6k tickets, police that.

Probably why the tickets were so dear ... fleece the away fans and cover the cost of policing.

I notice a palace fan on their with a signature which mentions us, weird.
  • I can only think that the Met got some new toys during the Olympics, and haven't had the opportunity to play with them before.

The amount of old bill there would have been more use dotted in a line along the route if they wanted to stop trouble there. Instead of a passive presence like this, They instead went for an aggressive inflammatory kettling,

I've been all over the country watching us and throughout Europe watching other games, and have never had an iota of trouble happen to me, and that's wearing colours most of the time. If you don't go looking for trouble, you generally don't get affected. The police need to understand that, and trust the public a bit

Almost exactly my words to their officers blocking a side road to the left further along that route, allez les addicks.

You won't be surprised to learn that there was no response ...
  • Amount of police resources - dogs, horses, helmuts, cameras, vans... was ridiculous. One high profile incident where a gang of palace muppets picked on a few families on a train and this fixture has become the biggest money making operation the met police has had since the creation of speed cameras. Absolutley ridiculous. Walking to the ground before the game was the funniest though - there was a gang of palace window lickers dressed in black being escorted to the ground. I think it was a class nerd reunion or something. What an assortment of weirdos they were.
  • Does anyone know who will pay out for the damage to cars & property our "supporters" did yesterday ?
  • Insurance companies or the people who own the cars I imagine.

So, if the insurance claims go through, people could lose their "no claims" through no fault of their own ?
That doesn't seem right to me.

I don't imagine it will be you so calm down and / or go up there tomorrow and help with the tidy up.

Fingers on lips for those who weren't there.

Sorry Mr PL54, but, as I said earlier, a friend had his car mirrors broken and a window smashed near the ground (& he's not a palace supporter). Just wondering how the "law" works in and around football grounds.

  • If it got smashed up outside a football ground or outside your house on a non match day either way the police wouldn't give two shits about it. As messed up as it sounds its the owners problem.

Just read The BHA site. Like you say, identical. The police really are twats.
  • Incredible - utterly identical in every way.

What a bunch of utter wankers the coppers who make those decisions are (and many on duty by the sounds of things).

I'd be raging if I was one of those residents.

    Haha quality.
  • The police response on Saturday to Charlton fans, is because of the growing number of incidents of vandalism and stupidity from a growing number of so called Charlton supporters at away games, and yes I was there Saturday. I to felt annoyed at my treatment,I wanted Selhurst or Thornton Heath staions not Norwwod to get home, but when you see teenage and middle age men vandalising cars and gardens then you can underestand why the police did what they did.
While ther are these idiots and criminals lauding on websites even ones like this it will only get worse, with greater restrictions on Charlton fans who want to watch away games.
  • must of cost a fortune. no way can that amount of police and that steel wall be justified for a palace v charlton fixture. and so many people feeling sorry for the old bill, hardly a inner city riot easiest money most of them will have earnt some on overtime.
  • To be honest if the police had let us walk out straight after the game, there would have been no vandalism. Just line the pavement creating a tunnel and away we all would have been. I was at the front and it very quickly got out of hand, because of the swell of people at the rear pushing up. The people at the front had no chance and were being pushed from behind.

I saw one copper hit a young lad for no reason. A few coppers agreeing that it was ridiculous. It appears there were idiots on both sides (police and fans).

Still at least we all have something to talk about and read other than reading about Charlton losing.
  • i was at the front of the cordon and i cant condone anyone disobeying the instructions of the police...however the whole thing was a ridiculously clumsy costly and heavy handed operation by the met (why the hell were they filming a group of middle aged ,"kettled up" football supporters)...as for damage to cars/bikes /front gardens dont think it would have happened if we d all been allowed to walk down to norwood junction in our own time...

would have been better just have a few coppers place along that road every 50 yards...that would have been enough in my view

    Very Disappointed of Chislehurst

Sums it up, really. Seems to me they created a situation designed to get out of hand.

Does anyone know if the tactics were used for Brighton or Millwall?

It was a joke. Getting crushed in a surge to get onto the platform shouldn't be happening.

Even if there were no flares, seats pulled out etc we would have still been dealt with in the same way.

The real crime yesterday was my local Kebab house asking me for 1 quid for a dollop of coleslaw on my kebab. Mental!

Coleslaw on your kebab ?? That is wrong ! I'd have refused to serve it !!

I feel sorry for the Police as they're going to be criticised whatever they do.

I have read some comments on here to the effect that 'where the Police when our fans were attacked by CP supporters a few years ago?'. If, on Saturday there had there been few Police about and Charlton fans were attacked, people would be moaning that there weren't enough Police. They are in a 'no win' situation. It seems that due to the acts of a few, Charlton fans will now have to be carefully watched by the Police at away matches in future.

    Not in my name.

Not sure why you feel the need to feel sorry for them mate? They are there to maintain law and order. They got it very wrong. You didn't have to be that clever to pre-empt what was about to happen ! People may complain, with justification at the treatment but ultimately the OB will not be held accountable.

Oh and btw, I have to say that the vandalism was wrong and should not be condoned.
