I was told before the game by several people not to expect much from our players tonight as they wouldn't be trying to much as they hadn't been paid and didn't know when they would be paid next. I thought they were knocking but now it seems to make sense.

    WUM

  • I make my decision on a player early, thought the clown, francis were shit after one game, after Orient I thought Wilson was toilet, tonite confirmed my fears. Sorry peeps it aint going to get better.Better team won, one dimesional.Look after the ball it's your friend,
  • agree with SHG

on a positive note Fuller looks like he's not just coming to coast thru , put himself about a bit , fairplay to him

Question the management? Seriously? That was SCP's SIXTH game in charge at this level. He is still learning his trade and pitting his wits against some very good sides. However much we hate Palace and their muggy fans they outplayed us tonight and we have to realise this division will be incredibly difficult indeed.

Maybe the wrong words used - however , i am getting seriously pissed off with ...
    a) Hoofball
    b) Lack of a plan B
    c) a shit midfield

All these points are not specific to this season, so why havnt they been addressed this season? !
  • It surprises me that people seem to think that we have only just started playing long ball. We did this a lot last season but the difference was that it worked well with Kermo winning it nearly 100% of the time. We are also a team very dependent on set pieces.

I've long felt that we don't play the ball out of defense enough, and bypass the midfield. Perhaps in this division you need to play it around more in midfield but we just don't have the players capable of doing this. For me Jackson, Wilson (who should only be played in midfield) and Pritchard are lower 2nd division players which is where we are. I do believe that Prichard however has the potential to improve.

I like Kermo but perhaps dropping him would lead to an enforced change of mentality. Fuller alongside BWP may be what's needed.

For me there were two players on the pitch tonight who were a class above the rest: Fuller and Saha. One is being deployed to his full potential and the other not (although not CP's fault as I don't think he's yet at full fitness).

With a few changes and without needing any new signings we can do OK in this league. We only lost tonight because of a a disallowed goal and at Birmingham in the last minute. Many of our players just need o learn a few lessons in this league and we'll be picking up more points.
  • I wouldn't be reaching for the Owlstalk brand razors just yet lads. In this league there's a lot of good teams and very small margins. I know it's irrelevant to us now but I wonder if Zigic hadn't scored with that last kick, and if our legitimate goals hadn't been disallowed against Palace and Hull the midfield would look so bad? We haven't been quite as terrible as many are making out. You'd think we were some rich Play-off contending team that was underperforming, instead of a newly promtoed team and manager finding their feet. There will be more to come from this side, though i do think our lack of width needs addressing. Chins up

    sorry, I totally disagree.

It doesn't take a Ferguson or a Wenger to work out that by playing 4 non-creative midfielders in the same side means you will create diddly squat !! You either need wingers to create width & crosses or midfielders running at players with the ball to create chances for the forwards............we have neither.

Until that changes we will continue to struggle. end of

  • Agree with all the comments about the midfield which worried me even before the season started. We need to strengthen and fast otherwise it will be a very long season. Like many on this thread I have been a big fan of JJ, and he will always be appreciated for his part last year, but I'm afraid he is clearly not good enough for this level. Stephens was the best of them today but we should have taken the money and bought 2-3 replacements. My Southampton friend rated Hammond, who we were linked with, and he is now starting for the league leaders Brighton. Powell is rightly loyal to his players but I really hope he can see what we all can?
  • But we have the players to play!

Anybody that went Birmingham away saw this.

Why can't we do it on a regular basis?!
  • Cause not many teams have started the season off as poorly as birmingham, they were dire.

  • Think its been mentioned on here somewhere previously that Gus Poyet, when questioned about any regrets regarding Brightons 1st season back in the Championship after walking League 1,were that he stayed too loyal to the players who got them back up for too long. That starting 11 was more or less the regular line up from last season was it not? I just hope that Powelly doesnt make the same mistake for too many more games because as much as winning becomes a habit so does losing and in a better league that could prove costly. For what its worth, for all their build up play and possession,Hamer was rarely troubled and despite us playing pretty poorly we really should have got a point from that game. They will no doubt rejoice at this result, they havent got much to be happy about after all but all they got was 3 points. Form is temporary, class is permanent. In Powelly we trust.

Oh yeah, I forgot, unless your in the " inner circle" your not allowed to hear stories and just tell people what you heard without being called a WUM or people demanding to know who told you! So, I take it all back and pretend I didn't say anything. Hope it makes ya feel better!
  • Plus points were the performances of Solly and Morrison. Wiggins was absolutely terrible before he went off and Pritchard and Jackson just don't cut it at this level.
Wilson seems to be the player that the boo boys are after this season - personally think he's okay but a lot of our fans wont give him a chance.

Most of our players are journeymen who work hard but the lack of quality in our side is really evident at this level. Will be a long season.

  • There's been very fine margins this season in every game we've played in the league this season, every game (except perhaps Forest) could have finished differently if the luck had gone the other way, e.g. we could have won at Brum, drawn vs Leicester and Nigels and lost vs Hull, which would have given us the same points interestingly...

What the superior quality of this league does highlight are the weaknesses from last season
    1) Our central midfield wasn't brilliant last year, when compared to the rest of the team, indeed that has been a weakness since the later Curbishley years! If anything we currently look weaker there than we did last year, having lost Russell and the mythical Alonso
    2) We play too much long ball, against better defenders Yann no longer looks a beast
    3) Powell's tactical substitutions aren't very dynamic, and are often too late, the lack of substitutes vs Hull in the horrible conditions was baffling
  • Too many hot heads here. Even had East Stand guy giving me the finger after he said worst Charlton team ever as I objected. Draw should have been fair result, Palace set up as an away team to hit on break and got the goal they defended for their life. Clapped off Charlton with my seven year old who asked why everyone was so aggressive. Hamer appreciated us staying anyway. Top man.
  • Kev us no wind up, though I doubt it is true.
  • Two people talking to me in crossbars before the game. I don't think I said they were important people within the club or anyone special, just two people talking to me at different times, which turned out to be fairly accurate (well the playing part). But whatever they were saying, they both seemed well up on current affairs within the club. Who knows they may get the information off of here, but they appeared confident in what they were saying.
  • 2) We play too much long ball, against better defenders Yann no longer looks a beast

I think his time at Leicester showed that too...............1 goal in 20 games. Maybe a league too far ??

  • sorry but I really don't get the dale Stephens love in that some people seem to have on this forum. Has more bad games than good in my opinion. Nowhere near as good as some people seem to think he is. £2 million from villa would have allowed us to significantly improve our midfield. Hate criticising Powell and the board but can't help but feel they made the wrong decision there!!!

Need to build the midfield around Stephens. He is different class. Precious little chance to shine tonight, but he still did. Struggle to see how others don't see it.

Also find the criticism of Wilson from others on here ridiculously harsh. He did ok in his championship debut and was no worse than Rhoys.

We're turning on Yann now?? Alright, I'm taking a break. Call me when reality returns

They were much the better team tonight.Where does that put us?

Why - is he above criticism ??? I am the first one to moan & say that the forwards haven't been given any service but there has to be more to his game than to leap in the air & try to head the ball to his fellow striker ??? Sometimes he should go for goal more & he seems content just to lay the ball off - I reckon his shots per game count is pretty poor.

that team were shocking tonight, unable to pass and resorting to long ball because of being outplayed. time to stop w...... over what done in poxy league one, this team is awful

Anyone else notice that he never seems to get the ball passed to his feet?

Not much for me. Arguably shaded it slightly, but they are more used to the Championship. Also used aggression as a tactic, like Forest - lent in on a lot of challenges, which was intimidating.
  • What qualities does johnnie jackson actually have apart from having a good left foot delivery?

This is my view on the games we've played..

    Should have won against birmingham..
Lost against leicester but somehow won..
    Lost again hull ..
Should have conceded a lot more again notts forest but somehow didn't..
And outplayed tonight by an average team bar zaha

This has been coming and its here to stay for a very long time if powell decides to remain loyal to certain players.

I will now sign off for tonight, waaaayyy to angry for some reason....

Don't panic after one game, but there seems to be a couple of weaknesses/shortcomings. Mostly midfield and width. Have to say thought Morrison and Solly were fantastic as usual

Its two but agree lets not panic yet
