Charlton 0-1 Palace - Post Match Views

edited September 2012 in General Charlton
Well done to Crystal, they were the better team. The shite decision by the linesman to rule out BWPs perfectly good goal obviously didn't help and had we taken the lead it could have all been different.
I thought Wilson was excellent and Green and Fuller looked good when they came on.

  • I thought it was fairly even and we dominating the last 15.
  • It hurts but your right the better team won. Didn't think we looked dangerous. until green came on. we had no width to get behind em. we need a winger playing from start
  • Think Green should replace Jackson for the next game. Not knocking JJ but think he was ineffective again tonight.

If this is going to be the 'official' post match thread, I have to agree.

    We weren't out-fought. But we were out-foxed and out-skilled.

We improved with the arrival of Fuller and Green, two players who can do a bit more on the ball. But despite the disallowed 'goal' that should have stood, Palace were good value for the points and deserved the win.

Plenty of endeavour and we gave it everything. No criticism of any of the players. That's why I think It's going to be a long hard season!
  • Wilson, Green and Fuller should start next, Pritch looked lost, Stephens is in and out and Kermy bless him looked a division to far

Can't say that on here mate :)
But i agree with you .
  • Agree with Jayajosh that it was even and we dominated towards the end. Disallowed goal makes it even harder to take considering it's already the 2nd time it's happened this season
  • If Green's the answer I'm worried.
  • ...we dominated towards the end.

Yes we did. But when the away team is winning 0-1 with 10-15 mins to go, you would expect that. I'm afraid it doesn't alter the fact that they deserved their victory tonight.

  • Need to learn some patience all around the team. A fast game does not suit us because there is no pace in the side. And when we get near to the box, we need to be patient and pick out a pass, not just take a shot from nowhere. Our strikers look dangerous, but they have no chance without service.

  • Don't panic after one game, but there seems to be a couple of weaknesses/shortcomings. Mostly midfield and width. Have to say thought Morrison and Solly were fantastic as usual

Did you see his performance? I thought some of his play was sublime, he nearly contributed to a couple of goals in the short time he was on.

Yup hard to disagree with this.

Quite! but who honestly is the answer in our midfield?

With a bit of good fortune we would have had a point from it but...this pains me to say it.....they were the better side tonight. There are plus points though, Solly was superb, Wilson looked good, Fuller will carry a big threat for us and Greeny looked up for it. We need to take it as a kick up the posterior and push on from here.
  • As an overseas addick unless when I am back in the UK, the only games I get to catch are those televised.
Few initial points having now seen the Forest and tonights game.

    - Physically we look inferior to a big Palace team - We seemed to lose alot of 50/50 tonights and aerial battles (apart from Cort)
    - We really struggled playing against a 451/433 in the first half...When faced with this we may have to do what Curbs use to do in the Premiership and match teams up.
    - Very direct, with such a style you are not going to be able to use BWP. He doesn't have the technical ability to play on the wing, and poaching/running behind defenders skill is wasted when the team is so direct.
    - I understand why Chris Powell was so loyal to the team from last after a great achievement, but additional loan signings will benefit, especially in midfield.
    - I dont believe we will come up against a better winger than Zaha this season, Solly did exceptionally well to fill in at LB
    - CB look solid, but another CM is needed or a change to a 451 otherwise we will be overrun. I thought Stephens had a good first 60 minutes, and showed the necessary composure you need on the ball at this level, but we certainly seemed to be missing some bite in that area.
  • Having been there thought both teams were poor. Haven't seen disallowed goal but it would have made a big difference. Wiggins going off was huge. Didn't rate wilson but difficult to judge from north lower. Hamers was perfectly in the corner, thought it was in. Cnuts
  • Wilson started off poorly, peaked midway through the second half but what in God's name was the point of blasting the ball from 30 yards out with the last touch of the game? Surely it must have passed through his mind that a cross to the 3/4 players in the box might have been a better option? Fuller was impressive, Kermo was unusually quiet and not his best. BWP was one of the hardest workers on the pitch, along with Stephens. Jackson I think has reached his prime (fitness wise) and cannot play a wide position so should try for a central role. Pritchard was terrible, but had his 1/2 moments. Hollands the quiet engine in the middle of the park, always reliable. Hamer impressed me with his header and overhead (more the header, astounded me that a charlton player actually got his head on the ball from a corner). Green more efficient in the last 10 minutes than Pritchard was in the entire game. Morro and Cort fairly secure. Think SCP needs to move the squad around, make a few changes.
Referee and linesmen were terrible, could not think for themselves and repeatedly made stupid mistakes.

    Rant over.
  • - Hollands was invisible for the second game running
    - Pritchard should not be playing right wing, we need pace out there.
    - Green or Wagstaff need to be given a chance, two key players from last season.
    - Wilson impressed me
    - Stephens looked good at times.

Hope Wiggins injury isn't too serious.
  • Where's Green been hiding .......?

We looked a different team when he came on - brought a better balance and shape.

Team full of 3rd & 4th Division players.
  • Wilson was the worst footballer ive seen in a long time. Paid real attention to him and he was very poor. Green bwp and hamer the only bright sparks from that crock of shite today.
  • Yes Palace deserved it. Not sure how long it will take for SCP to wake up and see that our midfield is soooooo sloooooow and has no width. Long old season I demon based on that. Lot of teams will be much better than Palace.
  • Midfield is wank

Really??? Watching on TV I thought he did pretty well, apart from the last minute blast - I can only go by what I saw on TV though so I bow to whoever was there...

Thought the ref was excellent, tbh. Linesman was obviously wrong. But as Powell said in post-match interview, it was an honest mistake and you could see why he got it wrong.

Not sure abusing the officials is going to help us. I can't really think of a major decision the ref got wrong (given that he had to rely on the lino for the off-side call and was not in a position to over-rule it).

No one at the club unfortunately. We needed to bring in one or two quality midfielders in this summer. Looks like we couldn't afford to do that as I doubt Powell isn't aware of our midfields weaknesses.

Yes we did. But when the away team is winning 0-1 with 10-15 mins to go, you would expect that. I'm afraid it doesn't alter the fact that they deserved their victory tonight.

So we can only count the other 70 minutes then? Don't really follow that logic.

I am not saying we played well or deserved a win but both teams had periods where they were on top(of the 70 minutes that count). I definitely don't think we would have been considered lucky had we taken a point today
  • we lost to a better team, one thing though Palarse had two of their 18yr old youngsters playing, where are ours who are meant to be so good?
  • Lot of teams will be much better than Palace.

Wait till we play Millwall they're a much better team then Palace, They'll destroy us.
