Just thank the lord your fathers weren't Palace wrong'uns, otherwise you'd have grown up following that carnival masquerading as a football club. "Ultras" (lol), flares, cheerleaders, etc. it could be a lot worse guys, we could support them rather than cringe at them.
Agree on that - reminds me of the fans you see over here in the MLS who have only just recently discovered the game after watching a few La Liga games & try in a hollow & desperate way to create atmosphere. I'm sure they were noisy tonight, 3000 people in that stand whispering & shuffling about create noise due to the acoustics - but flares & flags, leave it out this is a sh"tty club with no history from the leafy commuter belt not Roma or Lazio....
I think that's the point mate. It's to be lambasted, not lauded. When you think what football clubs are about, we might be a "family club" for example. What are Palace? The embarrassing end-product of taking bits and pieces of other country's football culture and merging it into one sorry outfit. You speak to ANY neutral football fan about the Nigels, and you won't find one who respects them as a club. I'd hate them even if they weren't local.
I'd have love to have beaten them, we haven't, end of story. You shouldn't hear much gloating because they don't care about us.
(Hello to all the Nigels reading, hope you enjoyed seeing a crowd)
So you have a squad, youth system and all, and there should rightly be competition for places in the team. The dilemmas are complex. Do you drop someone after one bad game, or how many? To what extent do you make wholesale changes or just a couple? How much leeway do you give a new first team player? Do you marshall your forces according to the opposition you're facing, or if it's a home or away match? How do you maintain loyalty and trust when you're going to disappoint more players than you reward? Tricky for a manager to get 100% perfectly right.
How many goals did they score as a result of Wilson? Zero. Zero goals. And yet he's being compared to Simon Francis after not even having 90 minutes? If some of you lot were the manager we'd be in the Blue Square Premier. And you probably still wouldn't play WIlson..
His play led to a Palace attack, gaining a corner and the goal instantly from that.
Zaha v Wilson there was only one winner all night, I'd play him in the BSP but no higher than that
It's so obvious you wonder how the pros don't see it. Jackson is not a left midfielder.... never looked like it last season but just like Bailey the lack of quality allowed him to drift into the channel and score. It won't work this season. He's played excellently in the champ before and with a canny forward hit pass after pass for a goal - Colchester days.
Narrow the midfield. Play Holland, Stephens, Jackson or Pritchard in the center: I'd like to see Pritchard with his energy play but all of them are good enough with the right support in the champ: it's not like 08-09. If you win the center there are few players to hurt you on the flank in the champ. Then Green can be brought in to play wide right, and when calls inside right. Kerkar or whoever on the left. Modern football is all about dominating the central areas. Our players are good enough. Our best players are Solly and Wiggins use them on the overlap. It is poor this formation has not been worked on, especially with the brilliance of Kermorgant bringing others into the game. But he has to have players to link with. BWP is a forward for a relegation scrap in the champ, the bench is the best place for him.
Last year we struggled to dominate possesion. If you don't have players who hassle in the middle of the park, there is only one solution. You do wonder sometimes what proffessionals see on the pitch. I certainly think this squad is strong enough to survive, unlike october onwards in 08. I'd still like to see a stronger cm, but we ain't gonna do it with our recent 4-4-2.
I was told before the game by several people not to expect much from our players tonight as they wouldn't be trying to much as they hadn't been paid and didn't know when they would be paid next. I thought they were knocking but now it seems to make sense.
I've said it before and I'll say it again, the diamond formation doesn't work. We had absolutely no width for 80 mins of that match. When Green came on we got balls onto the box and put them under pressure. Agree with other lifers, I thought Palace were the better team. Now that the transfer Window's open, I think CP needs to think about getting in a tough tackling central midfielder to replace Danny Hollands. He was completely anonymous tonight along with Bradley Pritch and JJ. We've gotta take this on the chin and move on. Let's hope CP learns from his mistakes.
I can't believe all the comments praising Stephens and slagging off the rest of the midfield. Our attackers were starved of possession, and the best chance of the whole match would have been for Stephens to slip the ball through to BWP. It's rare that you see such a gap between the centre-backs and BWP had positioned himself perfectly. What did Stephens do, Oh yeah shoot from long range. Is he also exempt from the criticism of giving the ball away too often too easily, and rarely picking up second balls in midfield?
The disallowed goal was a disgrace (2nd time) and their goal was poor defending. How much room do you want to give an opponent on one side of the penalty box. He took it well but where was the defense?
It's blatantly obvious that our midfield is struggling and that we need some width.

Yeah, that must be it. Wish I had a few of these sources myself sometimes.
It's going to be a long season. Palace are not a good team but we were still worse. Wilson was pretty poor as was the whole midfield. We need someone who can give our strikers something to actually work with rather than a hopeful punt forward.
Palace were the better team and we was pathetic, especially in the 2nd half. We could not keep the ball on the ground and was just playing long balls all the time which never worked. Why on earth did Powell not put Jacko left back and put Kerker on when Wiggins left injured, that would have balanced the team much better than putting Solly on the left side.
I agree about the midfield but I would put Jacko in the middle who can hold the play alongside Stephens and put Waggy on the right side. I would play Kerker on the left wing as well, at least we will have a bit of pace in the midfield.
And Palace fans on Holmesdale, I know your reading this. I hope we made your season. Let's just see where we both finish come end of the season.
Palace are a mid to lower Championship team and played us off the park. We'll be lucky to avoid relegation this season. Green was the only attacking highlight and gave us width and skill, but we had to put up with the dross of Jackson and Pritchard in wide positions instead for most of the game
This
I have been saying this since the start of the season - no width, no imagination, no goals. WE simply can not go on with BOTH pritchard & jackson in the side. Neither are natural wingers and Pritch is so out of his depth he is drowning. Yes he runs around a lot, gets in a few tackles but has no forward nouse, Jackson I would probably keep in the side mainly because of his set pieces, but I would not be immune to dropping him too. Bring in Green and maybe Kerkar too...............I also rate Bover & feel he could be the answer - certainly have him on the bench.
I also think it was a fairly even game - they had patches where they looked really dangerous but then we had spells (last 15 mins of both halves) where we could have (and did !) score. Main difference is that they had players (Zaha & Bolasie) who ran at defenders with the ball & created mayhem...............perhaps Powell may just look at the tapes & learn..............but I doubt it.
expect the same starting 11 (minus Wiggy if injured) on tues night v Derby.
I don't think we were worse than Palace football wise. However we are very naive at this level. Teams are bullying us. Case in point is the number 15 today. Little footballing ability but he broke up most of our attacks...often illegally and when we tried to play long to Kermy he obstructed him. Hopefully Fuller can teach our lot a little bit of nous.
Thought Wilson was ok in 2nd half - a lot better than most. and he didnt shirk, unlike others.
I think he only looked better later in the game because the ball was further away from him, mostly owing to the effect of Fuller and Green playing in front of him. He was able to get forward more himself. Positive liability defensively.

Actually I think you will find last week I received numerous hate messages on my jackson thread calling me a' deluded teenager' . Funny how things change
Hmm, Palace were the better team, Zaha is a quality player and Murray did a good job as the hard working target man...
As for us, well our central midfield wasn't brilliant last season (in relation to the rest of the team) and was overrun tonight, I've said it here before many times, but last season we looked good playing a Hughes or Russell to give more defensive cover in midfield, and for some reason we've nobody in our squad who can play that role.
Defence was reasonable, Wiggins was really struggling against Zaha, Solly (my MOTM) did an excellent job on the wrong side. Wilson wasn't brilliant defensively, but was reasonable going forward, a better bet than Pritchard? Maybe Jackson should have moved to LB, leaving Solly at RB, as he's doing nothing in midfield at the moment. Stephens was OK, Hollands anonymous and Pritchard poor, Green looked very dangerous when he came on, and saw far too little of the ball, when the other players should have been giving it to him.
Yann was poor, those endless punts to him were delivering nothing, Cort was the only player with aerial strength.

We could hear it from Sutlej Road!
