I'm staggered how many people in this thread are even entertaining the idea of us selling Chris Solly, I really am.

He's `one of ours' having come through our ranks. He's just had a fantastic `dream' season culminating with promotion and a richly deserved POTY award. He's getting his first experience of genuine hero worship and affection from supporters and a club that he clearly loves. He's working with the best, and I firmly believe this, manager in the country at the moment who also just happens to be the best defensive coach out there....and some of you lot would flog this for a piddly couple of million quid.

    No, no, no, absolutely NO!

If someone offered RIDICULOUS money then fair enough but seeing as they ain't Solly's potential sale is a complete and utter non-starter for me. Some of you have mentioned that cash raised from his sale could fund advancement of the squad. As the club is under new ownership with investment required and expected and given the boards stated objectives, funding should be part of the project anyway and shouldn't rely on selling our best players `along the way'.

Anyone with a brain cell in their 'ead can see Chris Solly has serious premiership potential about him....and when he inevitably does reach that level it should be with us. During this current period of our history we should NOT be a selling club....

....and especially not to soddin' West Ham FFS!!

How refreshing to read a post, that doesn't presume we aren't in a position to keep him because "we can't afford him", and that a club like West ham make an offer so "He's on his way".
We have little to no knowledge of what funds are available at the club, yet people still tell us what they think we can or can't afford.

    BOTH OF THESE!!
  • We have no idea of the funds we have available but traditionally any money spent is done so in the name of the club. So if expenditure exceeds income our debt increases. Personally I'd sell any player for the right price but it has to be when you can maximise the value of a player. With two more good years in the championship sollys value would double. So now would not be the time to sell unless a stupidly high offer came in.

The same applies to most clubs & that includes the supposed interested party, West Ham... Their expenditure has exceeded their income for many years, and they carry debt.

"Funds"... Depends what the mysterious backer wants to plough in... We have little to no idea what that is.
  • Selling your star player for a large sum doesn't guarantee team strengthening. One only has to think back to the sales of Scott Parker and Darren Bent. We are a team on the up, we need to keep our best players and add to them. Selling sends out the wrong message to the fans and the management. Solly's value is likely to increase as he gains experience at a higher level, we shouldn't be selling an appreciating asset unless we are desperate or the player wants to move.

Disagree. If selling a player can strengthen the clubs position and team overall then I have no problem. Being just a selling club would I agree send out the wrong messages but selling at a good price to reinvest in the team and thereby strengthen said team is just good sense.

  • Selling Lee Bowyer at the time helped moved the club forward.

But we haven't received any bids for Chris, so this is all a bit pie in the sky

Agree, it's just a massive no! We simply cannot afford to lose him, have people forgot since May already how bloody good this kid is?
  • none of us have a clue what our "Mysteron" owners are about.
Mr Slater was very clear at a Q&A some 18 months ago...
When asked about a 3-5 year plan it was:
Year 1 one aim - get out of this league
Year 2 stabilise and find our feet mid-table in the Championship (Personally I hope they have a crack at top 6/playoffs with the right signings)
Year 3 promotion to the Prem !!!
Year 4 relegation with parachute :)

So I reckon our best players will only go for silly money or decent money with a ready made replacement lined up...

If they want to cash in on players they will be worth alot more if they can take us into the top 6 and we lose the playoffs

  • Well I have it on good authority that we were intersetd in Christian Ribiero from Bristol City however the deal was not progressed by us because of the Chris Sollys place in the team. If we do sell you know who's coming in ...:-)

Not picking holes in your post but what would you seriously expect a new incoming chairman to say when asked that question ? In reality it tells us nothing.

  • Don't go Solly!!!!!!

But I reckon we should get ready for this most of the summer as are players are going to be looked at by other teams as we destroyed the league this year.
  • You need a good spine but the other players have to be decent too. the fact that we had the two best fullbacks in the league was a massive factor- make no mistake.

I thought Ribiero was quite versatile and could play any where accross the back four . He already has a Welsh Cap.

Totally agree, I just can't believe the amount of people on here giving it the "if we can get £1m & Baldock" it would be a good deal" or "selling him to improve the team would be a good thing" Do you all honestly think that weakening our defence is going to give us the cash to improve more than one area of the team ? Were you watching last season when time after time Solly broke up oppositions attacks to set up attacks of our own. He was the best right back in the division in the best defence in the division. Do you all seriously believe that we would improve the team by weakening the defence ?
  • In the board and Powell I trust whatever they chose to do they will do with the best intentions of the club and squad

I do not believe solly will leave for west ham he is far to good for them and is destined for greater things than them
  • Selling Lee Bowyer at the time helped moved the club forward.
To move slightly off topic, what a waste of talent. In an England era of Gerrard and Lampard failing to deliver, a guy with a good motor, could pass short or long, two footed and scored goals, barely got a look in for England, never played for big clubs. A great player, weighed down by his baggage. Probably more able to influence matches than Parker, Stuart or Jensen.
  • I think that I may be the only person who won't really be that disappointed if Solly leaves, Jordan Cousins has captained England u16 and 17 so surely if Jenkinson and Solly can step up so could he. If Solly leaves don't think we need to panic buy and think Cousins could have a big season.

I think you might be right. You will be the only one not disappointed.
  • I'm sure Cousins is a good young player but Solly is really something special. If he leaves I will be gutted.
  • I will be disappointed, but it's not the end of the world if he does leave.

  • @harveys gardener It was not just Bowyers baggage, it was also his attitude. He was all set to join Liverpoolon £9 m deal as I recall, which we would have got a cut of, and Liverpool pulled out because of his attitude.

Of course, when he joined Leeds they were a big club, still basking in the last non premiership top tier championship victory

Except that we've just seen year 1 of da plan... 18 signings last summer; backing manager after dreadful run (end 2010/11); not afraid to bring in loans in Feb/March to freshen up the squad etc

No one knows what money they have and what footy agent contacts they have to secure the right additions this summer but it's clear to me they are about building a top 6 Championship squad and fan base

That's why I conclude that selling top players will only be for the good of the club/squad just like the sale of Lee Bowyer and Danny Mills back in the 90s... remember Richard Murray might not call the shots and owns 10% but he's been here before
  • It's da plan of every single football club in the country. FACT
  • but we are the ones getting to "live the dream" a second time... enjoy the ride :)
  • He's not going to come out and say 'Well lets get into the Championship, then just stagnate in mid table selling off our best young talents for a healthy profit, whilst never investing in our dilapidated old ground or the team for a few years, before getting bored and selling off to some anonymous Russian guy who pretends to be a Billionaire' is he?

That's what Gliksten junior said by his actions throughout the 60s and 70s ... selling top top players to balance the books... I don't think these guys are in it to hang around with years of mid table Championship - no money / no fun in that

Dilapidated old ground? the majority of last season's opponents would love to have a ground as good as ours!

I was referencing a certain club in our vicinity, not our actual ground!

    Oh, I see! ;)
  • Ultimately we are, like 90% of teams, a selling club - i.e. if the price is right & the player eyes bigger success or a pot of gold, out they go. We've seen examples where we got price & timing more-or-less right (Mills, Bowyer, Bent), and others where we either got peanuts (Paul Elliot - i couldn't believe how little we got) or the timing was all wrong (a certain Euro 2012 squad member).

On Solly, for me it all comes down to price. If silly money is on the table, and he wants to go, then I'd take it (though not without regret). But that's a lot of ifs, and I do have faith in our current management that we'd not let anyone go cheaply, and unlike the Bent money, we would spend the proceeds wisely on a decent replacement and more.
