Solly on the move?

edited June 2012 in General Charlton
Knees Up Mother Brown reporting that WHU have made an enquiry into CS availability. http://www.kumb.com/story.php?id=126287#.T9HSaItu6vI.twitter , whilst we are interested in Sam Baldock.

Love this paragraph about how Solly took over from regular full back Carl Jenkinson, who only ever played 8 games.

"Rochester-born Solly made his debut for Charlton at the age of 18 on the final day of the 2008/09 season, but it was only when regular right-back Carl Jenkinson fell out of favour in March 2011 that he became a regular member of the first team"

Any way something for us to talk about football wise.

  • I hope not!
  • Sam Baldock would be a good addition but no way can we lose Solly - The key players in our defence have to remain intact next season.
  • I love Chris as a bloke and as a player but a right back is far easier to replace than another position.

If and it's a massive unfounded IF we got Baldock in, some cash AND took Lowton from Sheff Utd then we would be better off would we not?
  • He aint going anywhere.
  • I would hate to see him go, but I guess if it allowed us to bring in 3 or 4 quality players, then it makes sense to look into it. At the end of the day it's always about the team moving forward and not about individual players. I'd be gutted if he went though.

an enquiry that has hopefully been met with a swift 'f**k off'
  • Would have to be for a similar proportion of money that Jenkinson went for ie allowing us to be one of the top spenders in the league. As that would be multiple millions cant see it happening.

No point selling our best players unless it allows us to buy better players.

  • I think if he goes, it will be to a bigger club than West Ham.

    Sheffield Wednesday?

Sheffield Wednesday then, as only they could be bigger than the club that won the world cup!

  • Every players has a price. For me I wouldnt sell for anything less than 2.5 million and im pretty sure that would scare west spam off
  • Hold onto him for another year and we could be talking serious money lets see
  • He won't stay with us forever, he's a footballer, I'd keep him for this season and see how it goes, then sell him for anything above 3 million

I am afraid I agree with this .

To be clear I am NOT saying that we should sell Chris but IF we did then Baldock and lets say another £1 Million which could secure Lowton would make our squad stronger .

  • I'd be happy with 2 mil , Sam baldock and a few add-ons ( for appearances , goals and future transfer fees )
  • I'd prefer to keep him, but if the money is enough for us to bring in replacements that will make the squad stronger then it makes sense, and the current owners have demonstrated that they are very business minded in that regard.

However, I don't think that any of our players have done enough, yet, for a Premier League club to make the kind of investment in them that we are all talking about.

If we assume that a squad player that is expecting to push for a first team place is going to cost upwards of £2m then you would expect the club to want the player on a decent length contract, minimum three years but probably four years. A £2m, plus, player is going to expect close to £20k a week. A four year contract plus a transfer fee is going to run close to £6m.

If a player has not, yet, looked good in the Championship there is a massive risk that if he is not good enough for the Premier League you will not see any of that £6m. The player will be earning too much to expect any tea to even take him on a free.

For this reason I can't see the kind of offers being mentioned to our more successful players of last season.

Cue a £3m offer for Solly and £30k a week for the player just to make me look an arse!
  • for some reason i don't think chris will leave this summer
  • I think we can't really know how good a right back he can be, but we do know that he is a key part of an excellent defensive unit that will be key to our success next season. Three players that should be untouchable/unsellable are Solly, Wiggins and Morrison.
  • the outcome to this may tell us more about the realistic aspirations for our club under the new owners than anything we've heard so far.
  • Be a real shame to see Chris leave but if reinvested we could make a real leap forward again.

  • I'd take Baldock, Lowton, Quinn and Andrews if it meant we had to sell Wagstaff and Solly. He's a great player but at the end of the day we would be silly not to sell if a great offer came in. One player doesn't make a squad, but the money from selling that one player could.

possibly, although possibly not if the player is motivated to move, wouldn't you agree?

  • I very much doubt a League 1 player will command a fee of 2.5 mil. Would prefer to keep him. Does anyone know who he supports?
  • I'd be Solly to see him leave.

    possibly

    :-)

The motivation for a player to move is likely to be either finances or ambition.

Do we have the finances and ambition to keep good players?

We may be about to find out.

  • From a salary and fees perspective any premiership side could tempt away any of our players. For a while we've flown under the radar, but having smashed all kinds of records last year that's no longer going to be the case , particularly not for a young right back who walked off with player of the year. Nobody is unsellable. We've got a good board but one that (I'm guessing) wants to make a return, and you've also got a human variable: Chris might be interested in more money and a higher level of the sport - people will doubtlessly be baffled by that, but these guys aren't Charlton fans, and they're working in a career that's about one quarter the length of a normal working life.

they are in the premiership (aren't they) hard nay impossible to compete with that whatever we threw at him

    Solly's a gooner.
  • L1 to the Premiership is a big, big leap - I think this is ballcocks.
