Bloody hell, was not on this board at all yesterday, for the first time this season (normally visit about 5 times a day!!) Now I log on and see this signing........what a good piece of business imho.
I echo what others have said, we now need a creative midfielder who can find that all important defence splitting pass and we have 3 very quick players (Anyinsah, BWP and Ecleston) who can tear any L1 defence to shreds with their pace. If we can also get a quicker CD toplay alongside the old experienced head in Dailly, then I am hopeful this could be our last season in this League.
I also agree if we can afford it lets keep as many of our strikers as we can....there will be times when we may need to change our strategy and play with a target man up front, what we dont need to do is limit our options, we now have potentially Plans A and B!
[cite]Posted By: Heath Hero[/cite]I don't wish to rain on everyone's parade but I'm struggling to get as excited about this as everyone else. It may well be because I don't know much about him or haven't seen him play, but from what I can work out we've signed a player with "previous", who at 25 has already had several clubs and who has failed a medical elsewhere. If he's that good why is he not still at Southampton? Obviously I'm happy to be proved wrong but with our history of signing people with dodgy knees I can see him hardly playing for us (or at least playing consecutively).
I'm firmly in this camp at the moment, hope he does well and it's clearly a sign we have a bit of cash which is great.
Its easy to look for the bad in everything , just as it is the good in everything ( although people find the 2nd option harder) i'm quite happy about this one , in this division BWP is the next best thing to Charlie Austen ( although completely different type of players) i'd settle for a swap deal with Abbott and Austen trading places , the set would then be complete , defence still needs sorting out , and an extra midfielder as well , but overall pretty pleased with this news, 18 month contract makes sense as explained by Uncle.
I'm not saying I want rid of Benson. I don't. Wright-Phillips, Anyinsah and Sodje are all injury prone Eccleston is young and inexperienced and Abbott is Abbott useful but not anything out of the ordinary so, if we can afford it, I'd carry the extra striker.
However Seth (Ithink) posed the question as to which striker (s) might leave and I suggested Benson as he is neither quick nor a target man which appears to be the direction we are going with recent signings. Pacy players need someone to play off and Benson, although he tries, doesn't really fit into that pattern.
Looks like a good signing. On the surface it looks like we have 1 to many strikers but taking into account that both Anyinsah and Wright Phillips are both managing injuries, Eccleston is only a loanee and I can see us going with this lot until the end of the season. Powell did say it's a blank slate. In training competition will now be fierce and the best will get their chance. I would expect BWP and Benson to be our first choice though. At the end of the season I would expect Sodje or Anyinsah are most likely to go as i think they are on the shortest contracts.
If Steve Brown comes in I can see Benson's chances being limited. : - )
All will have a part to play IMHO
Losing or drawing with 10 to go it's great to be able to throw on one, two or even three fresh strikers wingers.
Reid has hardly been mentioned but he can be an impact player.
The hard part for Chris will be to get them playing as a team but that's his and DMs role. I think it's a good signing and a real show of intent from the unfamous five.
Agree we need to keep as many strikers as possible especially given the injury records of Anyinsah and Sodje. We now have two of the top scorers in this division, albeit Jackson has benefited from an unusual glut of penalty decisions in our favour .. for a change. The midfield looks stiffer with McCormack on board. What we need now, as much as I like Dailly and Doherty (they are perhaps too similar and perhaps too old? .. ageist I know), is a pacey, experienced centre back. They are, of course, in short supply and in big demand. Dailly to the coaching staff with Mambo alongside the Doc perhaps? Is there time and the desire for experiments at this point in the season?
If i was Chrissy Powell at this stage i'd only be looking to add an experienced goalkeeper and a central defender who could complement Dailly. If Kiely came on board in some form then he could double up as Assistant Manager and back up goalkeeper. I'm sure someone else has already said that - so i'm someone who would agree with that view.
Very happy with this signing and hats off to the board who imo have done everything right so far. I get the feeling that the board are taking note of our opinions.
I think this is a great signing and (I hope) the natural goal scorer we've been missing since the last striker we had with a "dodgy" knee - Darren Bent!!

Me and that's what counts : - )
For me he wasn't quite MOM but he certainly played a key part in the performance and win.
Definitely worth keeping around and should be fresh for our run-in as he hasn't played much
