  • [cite]Posted By: Saints fan[/cite]Just to clear a few things up which I've seen on this thread:

Some mention BWP as a player who can play on the wing also, in his time at Saints he most probably had his worse games on the wing. He didn't score many and didn't create much either.

The best we saw of him at Southampton was when he would play upfront with a big man, like Kenwyne Jones. Also he was released from Saints because he was on massive wages which we could not afford at the time, we were prepared to offer him a new deal - he was prepared to listen but at the end of the day BWP decided to look elsewhere as a sale of the club looked unlikely.

On his day BWP can be a very good player, has plenty of tricks up his sleeve but one problem at Saints was his missed a fair few one on ones. His pace terrorizes most defenders though.

An interesting observation from somebody that watched him regularly.

This suggests, as mentioned above, Joe, Akpo or Pavel would work best with him.
  • I've never rated him, but I'm not really sure why. He always seemed one of those players who was quick but enigmatic and injury prone. He's scored a lot of goals this season though, so there must be something to him.

It's not a signing on the level of say a Charlie Austin, but it seems a good one nonetheless, and definitely a statement of intent considering a few championships clubs (and Blackpool I believe?) were after him.
  • [cite]Posted By: sam3110[/cite]I don't think we need a new right back, we just need Francis to play more short balls and someone give him more set piece training, so can we please stop this witch hunt on him?

I'd rather we focus on getting in a left sided centre back who can run faster than a milk float and isn't either 18 or 38! A mid to low 20's pacy centre back would do wonders to our squad, and then we just have to mould the rest a bit more.

Racon has the ability to play defence-cutting passes, so let's actually tell him that's his main priority in matches.
Francis is tall, quick, has a good right peg on him (though inconsistent) and can whip corners into the 6 yard box, so lets man manage him more.
Semedo is not an attacking player, we all know he's more Makelele than Essien, so lets not expect 40 yard passes from him!

I think our team is fine like this:

    ......................Elliot
    ...Francis.....Dailly.....(NEW).....Fry
    .....................Semedo
    ...............Racon......Jackson
    Anyinsah...Wright-Phillips...Ecclestone

Wagstaff, Benson, Reid, McCormack, Jenkinson, Doherty, Worner

agree with the majority of this - though dropping Waggy is harsh given the goals he's contributed this season
  • Good to see some more pace in the forward area.
    Should win the league now
    ;)

Funny thing is, with this team we are creating...we actually should. Or at least 2nd!
  • [cite]Posted By: stilladdicted[/cite]Six figure sum which pays the taxman.

six figure sum but less than Reading were prepared to pay which was 300k I think.

    So between 100k and 300k.

Perhaps we were willing to offer a lump some now rather than in stages as in the 60/60/60 deal for Benson.

Two interesting points. While BWP had been linked to us and a few others it was very general. The deal then happened Monday night and was announced on CAFC Twitter and then the OS. None of the usual BBC/SSN "understands" for the previous two days as happened with Eccleston. So the Club and or Powell reverting to Curbs style silence until it's done or just no one interested.

And very few other rumours going around either. Yes, we're a Div 3 club but a newly "wealthy" one with a new manager but very few names being strongly linked. Even the SLP doesn't seem to know much. Maybe their sources have changed.
  • I take it that it was between £100K and £265K. The latter sum is owed to the HMRC and the sale leaves them "closer" to paying that off.
  • £100,000.01

The daily paper for the West Country region, "Western Morning News", has a few other takes on the transfer - and a few words from the player:

  • Great signing, and no theft related jokes/snide remarks either.
  • BWP was caught on CCTV stealing a ladies handbag from a nightclub a few years back when he played for Southampton.
Until a few days ago i though BWP was just an overpaid, underworked, morally bankrupt thief.

Now however Ive changed my mind and I'm sure the whole incident was blown out of proportion by an excitable media and BWP was an innocent party in the whole affair and is teh best striker in league one.

well he was never charged as there was insufficient evidence so it was only 'alledged'. Whereas Lee Hughes is a bona fide scumbag.
  • I reckon we paid in cash...Brown paper envelope
  • I like him already...

"I had a few clubs after me, but some of them were a bit too far," the forward, who hails from south-east London, added. "I've never played in London, where I was born, and I just wanted to give it a try. Charlton is a big club."
  • sounds like he has a manageable knee injury - probably why he only cost x amount and only got 18 month deal, and why Reading balked, sorry if mentioned elsewhere

Heard somewhere that he has a knee injury which will require surgery in the summer, but is manageable until then.

Hmm seems you have missed an important detail.

He has Patella Tendinitis, which he says will swell up and be sore for a day or so after playing. After that he can train and play.
