  • [quote][cite]Posted By: Oggy Red[/cite][quote][cite]Posted By: ThreadKiller[/cite]i think the fans who booed are the reason we didn't go up[/quote]

Even though you're no doubt taking the proverbial ......... it didn't exactly help, did it?[/quote]

Yeah you're right Oggy the poor lambs needed a big cuddle.

    Booooooooooo
  • Mooney and Sodje ? Do we at least want to try and get promoted or not ? If we played both of them all season they wouldn't score twenty goals between them.
  • Theyve got goals in them apparently, but they're never gonna be prolific.

    oh.
  • Why would Mooney want to come back, he knows many of the fans do not rate him and although I am not condoning the booing, even Mooney knows if he comes back there is a high chance it will happen again.

Would rather Bauza. With Bauza and Sodje we have 2 strikers who should get double figures and provide a fair amount of assists and creativity (Sodje more so with flick ons and physical presence than Bauza who seems to have the natural intelligence and link up play), just need someone to be pushing towards the 20 mark.
  • [quote][cite]Posted By: Goonerhater[/cite]nope didnt help but the shit football didnt either.

We need a goal scorer they cost money we dont have any so we will get Mooney for no money.[/quote]

Exactly. To score goals goals you generally have to get close to the opposition's goal. On far too many occasions last season the opposition's keeper didn't have a save to make all match. I used to sit up til 3am every Sunday morning listening to dear Emma and it was a hell of a job trying to stay awake such was the lack of chance,s created especially in away games.
  • No thanks. Scoring record just isn't up to it and complete powder puff. Might have some good attributes and I would certainly not boo a Charlton player (unless they are Amdy Faye or Marcus Bent) but I have to say I think we could do better (even on a freebee).

Who knows maybe he will prove me wrong but nothing I saw last season would make me think that. I reckon he will sign for another League1 club on a 1 yr contract and end up back in non league next summer.

I think he might well prove you wrong. He's an intelligent player who gets himself into some very good positions.
  • I'm starting to think it would be a good thing if we didn't sign him, personally I think he is a decent player at this level however it seems that he needs a bit of love to score a few goals and quite frankly some of the morons we have at the Valley will never allow it. If we did sign him they would moan from the very first game he appears in and at the first mistake would jump straight on his back, booing and shouting abuse and thus lowering his confidence to such a level he performs poorly and those same morons will be able to say "told you so".
  • He smacked home some nice goals last year. He's no Alan Shearer but I would welcome him with Bauza. Bear in mind Jackson just cost £750k and is not much better than him.
  • maybe mooney and bauza would make a good partnership. mooney has got a half decent finish on him and with bauza teeing them up for him he could put a fair few away.

i think still there are much better options that mooney, but if we do sign him i would be interested to see how him and bauza play together.

  • I like the little fella!
  • Well said, colthe3rd. I'd definitely welcome him back although it's obvious some Lifers would never change their minds about him.

And some even refused to applaud when he did score.....There's nothing so queer as folk !

you can look at that both ways. I someone continually says they don't like the bloke and doesn't rate him as a footballer if they then jump up and go mental when he does occasionally score does that make them hypocritical ? I must admit that when he did score I very reluctantly got to my feet and not because I wasn't happy we'd scored but because I could see that goal extending our misery and him maybe being signed permanently. IMO he will never be a goalscorer. I hear people say he makes intelligent runs and gets in good positions but that is no good if you can't stick the ball in the net. We've had enough of those recently and have now got Akpo for that role. We need strikers who at least have some sembalence of knowing where the net is.
  • I rated him. At this level I think he did a job for us. He did have a couple of bad games for us but I can accept that. I wasn't at Millwall where, by all accounts, he had a stinker, and that was a very emotional result for the fans. His booing before kick off at home to Gillingham was always going to upset him, but for me, his ear cupping run after he scored made my mind up.

I know it's not nice to be booed, and I don't condone it, but two wrongs don't make a right, and that was the opportunity for him to bond with the fans that were not sure of him. I'm not sure he started another home game after that, and I'm not surprised, nothing is going to make the fans boo you more than an act of defiance. It felt, to me, that he was saying "Fuck you" rather than "See I can play, get behind me".

I don't really have the inclination to point the finger at who is right and who is wrong, but I just feel that it would be too big a gamble to bring back a player that so many of the fans dislike. We don't have the resources to sign players that we are not 100% (or as near as damn it) sure will settle in and contribute, and if the fans won't take to him then I think he should be left well alone.

I suspect that as he was signed by Reading when they still had serious money he is probably out of our price range too.
  • the goals he scored against gillingham and swindon proved to me that he has quality and a eye for goal......parky bring him back!!

[cite]Posted By: Ormiston Addick[/cite]Finding a 20-goal striker is pretty tough

Seeing as there was only 21 players from 18 teams across all four divisions that scored 20+ goals last season, I think you may be right
  • Newcastle and west brom didn't have a 20+ striker and walked the league last year

Ha ha says it all i very reluctantly got my feet and yet you are a Charlton fan? Who gives a toss who scores as long as its us, I just dont get going and not get behind whoever dons the red shirt. Dont get me wrong there are many players over the last few seasons that i have not liked but to say i reluctantly cheered because he might get a longer contract have a word
  • I get behind him when he plays cos he wears the charlton shirt, however i have said it many times before, there are players with the same 'talent' as David Mooney playing in the Kent County league. We must be really getting used to this third tier crap when we actually want that standard of player back.
  • What was the biggest frustration with Mooney

    Was it

    a) poor touch = No

    b) poor movement and position= No

    c) Fell over too much= yes

    d) Missed too many chances = Yes (where they guilt edged chances) = Not really

    e) were we looking for a goal machine to get us out of the league= Yes

    F) is Mooney ever going to be a goal machine= No

Is he a good player yes i reckon somewhere in there is a good player he does things quite fantastically at times but then he fooks things up at others wrong club wrong time for Mooney i think

  • i'd rather mooney than kakpo but that doesn't say much ....
which ever donkey represents charlton whether i think they are absolute tosh or not (and there's been quite a lot of shit recently, hence the league we're in) surely we all as genuine fans go crazy when they do something right
although i do sort of understand where large is coming from cos every game elliot played for us last year was one more randy wasn't playing
  • What Mooney lacked at this level ....... was experience.

As we all know, he's a bit lightweight but has plenty of ability, and a footballing intelligence to go with it.

I thought as the season progressed, he became more and more influential within the team - unfortunately disrupted by injury (remember that Millwall home game, when he was crucially involved in setting up 3 of our goals and ran the Millwall defence ragged - before they clogged him?) .

And his finishing improved as he got games under his belt, and a bit more experience.

But Mooney was very much a team player;....... but when he had a poor game (eg Brighton home, Millwall away), the team also played poorly. Or was it the other way round?
  • What the Ogster said.
  • Presume he's not been overwhelmed with offers so far, as it appears that he has hijacked the "Best Striker of Last Season" poll on the OS and spent this morning submitting multiple votes for himself.

So far leading the way with 71% to Deon's 26% and Akpo's 3%, 3,782 votes cast. I do not believe that roughly 2,500 Charlton fans have voted for him.

I shouldn't think Mr Mooney is sitting home alone in front of his laptop, pressing "F5" every 30 seconds.

Maybe it's Parky trying to win the fans over.

    Yes, that's it!
  • Lol i am probably one of his biggest fans and i'd still vote for Burton, gotta be a wind up as usual who would vote for akpoooooo
  • So right again, Brother Oggy .

Him always being offside annoyed me, wouldn't hate it if he came back, I really don't like the idea of fans booing him either, puts him in the same boat as Djimi Traore which just aint right!
  • Set to sign for Bristol Rovers.
  • Nth london addict is a good post.

Mooney for me was good up to his injury and after that spent too much time running round like a headless check to no great effect.
What we need is a goal scorer.

Pleased to hear the rumour that mooney is off to bristol rovers.

On the OS. There is a poll and shockingly Mooney is described as better than Burton.

    Best striker last season?
    Deon Burton 40%
    Akpo Sodje 3%
    David Mooney 57%
Total votes cast so far 6561
    Close Window

Burton was way better than Mooney, led the line well and battled on with a hernia, and scored more goals. What Burton needed was a goal scoring striker alongside him and unfortunately Mooney was not it.
