  • The one thing that stands out for me is Mooney's lack of experience in the English game - but I didn't realise that Mooney had in fact scored 3 goals in 9 appearances for Norwich City in the Championship.

I also didn't realise that 3 years ago, Blackburn Rovers had offered Mooney a contract, but he turned it down to stay in Ireland.

If Mooney did actually sign, I believe we'd see an improved player this coming season, anyway. He would have learned a lot from his 20 starts for Charlton and certainly how to play for the benefit of the team....... a point not lost on Parkinson.

Another point, when the team played well, so did Mooney. And we played a better quality game when he was in the team.
He linked play well enough going forward - and you have to judge his contribution on more than just 6 first team goals.

    Parky surely did.

Well, as a rule of thumb, 6 goals in 20 starts equates to 12 in 40 games, and playing regularly might just up that total slightly.
I reckon as a regular, he'd score 15 goals a season and provide at least 10 assists.

However, if we did sign both Mooney and Bauza, I'd see them competing for the same place in the team - although you can rarely predict how a season will unfold.
  • I wouldn't be as pleased with this signing as I was with Jackson/Reid, but neither would it give me a similar reaction to Richardson's sale (i got in trouble for calling the computer something very rude.) I think he could do well for us, but then again he might not. See what other options there are out there first.

I checked his assists on the FL site, he only got 2, but obviously there's no way of knowing (without watching every goal back) how many he was involved in, or other chances he created that were missed.

It depends if you only class an assist according to 'AFKA's rule' ..... the last meaningful touch.

Against Millwall at home, for example, Mooney chased down 2 lost cause balls and played a crucial role in creating both our first 2 penalty goals - and the chances would never have occurred without his major involvement. But in neither case was his the 'last meaningful touch', so he wouldn't be credited with the assist.

That's just one example that springs immediately to mind.
  • make him the new penalty taker and he might even make it much higher. in fact mooney is the 20 goal striker that we have been missing and he's been here all along!
  • We have paid a lot more on far worse players.
  • How many goals did Garry Nelson score every season?

Fair enough, I'd agree if used the right way he would help create as well as score goals.
  • He is a decent Div 1 striker. Not the best, not the worst. On a free, snap him up! I think he would work well with Bausa and get us about 14 goals but would that be enough?
  • We need at least four who can play up top. if Mooney is on a free, and affordable, who would be a better signing in the same circumstances?

  • Like Curbs before him, Parky's only looking to sign the 'right' kind of player ..... attitude, character and the ability to fit into and enhance the team unit.

    Mooney ticks all the boxes.
  • Jeez if i was DM i would run a mile, the lad comes in for some serious stick off some of you lot, your embarassing!Deon Burton didn't exactly set the world alight did he, but in comparison it seems he was a cult hero at Charlton. Some of you lot need to get real and get off this poor guys back!Mooney in my eyes is a far better player than Sodje but its funny how that signing didnt come in for as much criticism!
  • I don't particular dislike Mooney, however this link can't be serious after the way he mocked the crowd after he scored his last goal for us. Yes the majority of fans were on his case, and we are a very inforgiving crowd. But personally i think this is just his agent trying drum up some interest.

When he first joined us he looked keen. That whittled away very quickly to lack of effort (in my opinion) followd by lack of confidence when a ball did fall to him. IF in a state of confidence he might be a very good player. But we need a striker who can scored goals and wants to play for us. Personally i don't think this is Mooney. It could have been had his initial potential shone through, but with the fans on his case he gave up rather than trying to prove those fans wrong.
  • It's very simple. Those of us (me included) that think Mooney is decent are right and all the others are wrong. ;0)
I am not called Guru for nothing.

That's a laugh, if the crowd can't take it they should not have dished it out. Mooney was totally within his rights to cup his ear after he was booed before he had even come on.

A succession of away managers have pointed out how quickly we get on the back of our players so no wonder players under perform.

My point is not in agreement with the way the fans treated him or how he reacted. If i was him i'd do the same. My point is because he reacted why would he even want to come to us. I don't condone fans who boo anyone as it doesn't give anyone any confidence.

    OK we're agreed on that

Dunno but he was off-side a lot :-) . I liked Gary Nelson.... OH GARY GARY
  • coltthe3rd - My point, which you must have missed, is that Forster didnt do 'virtually nothing'. He scored two very important goals which gained us 6 points for a start.

  • Forster played as well as could be expected for us, given the way the team was set up and the very limited service he received.

I can him remember him playing as a lone striker at Southampton ...... he robbed a defender, foraged for loose balls, etc and made himself 3 half chances out of nothing, each one drawing good saves out of the keeper.

But he never received any decent service from his own players that day. I liked the player - generally had a good 1st touch, footballing nous and vision, a very neat turn in the box under pressure....... and always looking to get a shot off. However, he is a box player, but often at Charlton was expected to run the channels - a bit much for a 36 year old.

    Completely different player to Mooney.

Mooney also got some important goals
  • I think we have some real idiots as fellow fans, re: the booing(& some real chav thieves too!).
Some still have Premiersh*t in their eyes, & think we have a god given right to have high quality players.

Yep, that would be nice, but at the end of the day, we are a 3rd division club, no more, no less. Some fans still seem deluded enough to think that isn't the case.
  • Mooney, Mooney, Mooney we ponder. How many times I cried in the north stand when you crumbled under the opposition of intermediate strength, how many times I shouted when you missed an opportunity of wealth and when you conceded the ball when we were loitering around a possessional time wasting corner... After all this I will miss you next season, because you tried, you won balls and fed at smart times. You scored that goal. Mooney, Mooney, Mooney I ponder..
  • Don't really see where we can get 2/3 striker on a free who will do much better than him? I'd snap him up, he wont bang them in every weekend but there's still enough ability there to offer something up front, he still hasn't had much 1st team football in England since joining from Cork, some more experience and working on his strenght and fitness and he'd be an improvement on last season and the fans who booed him, shit like that really pisses me off. Except for Djimi Traore and Hasselbaink who deserved no better in fairness.
  • Who needs Wayne Rooney...........
  • I've got a horrible feeling.............
