CHASE ON FOR MOONEY Charlton are believed to be weighing up a move to bring Mooney back to the Valley with Addicks boss Phil Parkinson a big admirer of the 25-year-old.
shouldn't be hard to catch, even though he normally starts with a head-start (an offside position)
if we do sign mooney then i'm willing to give him the benefit of the doubt. When he came to us he was lacking match fitness, sharpness and confidence. at times he looked decent... unfortunately those times were few. however if he does come to us, i think we should give him a clean slate. give him the opportunity to show is that he is capable at this level and will score us goals. if we sign Bauza as well, then he will create chances for Mooney. with a few early goals into the new season he very well could surprise us all hit a run of form and get us 15+ goals.

Mooney is a good player and will do well. I hope we sign him and that the fans give him a clean slate and actually support him. Torres and Rooney are not available on a free so we will have to make do with a forward who is not great.I cannot see us doing any better on a free sign him up Parky!
Perhaps if Charlton play 'carpet football' this year (on the ground) then Mooney, if he joins, will do considerably better.
For me, he made some errors last year, sure, but then who didn't? There is no denying though, he has intelligence/good movement and positioning and some skill at turning and finishing when the RIGHT ball is provided.
Last year the ball was mostly hit long down the middle to the strikers which doesn't suit Mooney's style of play - he's never going to wrestle a big defender off the ball. Burton was the only striker who benefitted from that style.
Personally, I am glad we have sold Burton, really glad to be honest. Hopefully the team will now be about using the turf, spreading the ball and unlocking defences rather than the long ball merchants we have often been of late.
If Mooney does come back, I will be surprised, he didn't deserve the booing last year and was scapegoated, along with Llera, both undeservedly so.
the bloke is crap, end of, and would be better off back in Ireland or playing in the League of Wales. That's his level. He isn't good enough for League football.
Given that we are skint and in the third division we could do a lot worse than Mooney.
As others have said if we try and play to feet he will be seen to best advantage. Reidy and Waggy getting to the byline and whipping in low crosses could cause mayhem in opposition defences with Mooney's intelligent movement and Akpo's "lump" attributes and general awkwardness.
Who, within budget, are we likely to attract that is any better?

Yeah let us know what you think fella we haven't heard it a thousand times before YAWN we get the idea you dont like him

We have one striker on the books, if one of the three is Mooney then I wont be too disappointed. IMO he played a lot better than people gave him credit for at Swindon away and then in the home leg he looked solid. If he played like that week in week out then he'd be a decent player, perhaps with less expectation on him this year he'd be accepted more.
Yes he's frustrating (Southend away comes to mind), and yes he's not brilliant, but he did always give 100% and genuinely seemed to care. Compared with some of the other strikers we've been linked with, I'd be pleased to see Mooney come in on a free, quite probably with relatively modest wages.
Only reason I wouldn't want him to sign is so I don't end up having a row with the twats around me when they start blaming him for losing/conceeding /thesun is in there eyes/it's raining etc, like last season.
Mooney has got the nous and ability, and has now got a bit of experience to go with it, I think he can do a really good job at this level - but he is better off doing it away from our boo boys.
"the bloke is crap, end of, and would be better off back in Ireland or playing in the League of Wales. That's his level. He isn't good enough for League football."
I think this is really closer to the truth of it. "Intelligent movement" is one thing, but he is painfully slow, and loses the ball when in possession far too easily, is undoubtedly goal shy, and obviously affected by the criticism he is bound to get from the fans. I understand why PP brought him in last year, and he had a go, and wasn't completely useless, but we have to try to get someone with more potential than Mooney.
I understand people don't believe we can do better, but I'd much rather see us gamble on a Charlie Austin type goalscorer that has yet to play at this level (someone with the ability/confidence/pace that Mooney has not) than settle for someone we already know is pony.

is that the criteria then, we can't do better so sign him? I'd rather sign no-one than him. Anyway this arguement is academic, he won't be signing thank God.

It's a no from me, has too many weaknesses even for League 1 level. These weaknesses overshadow what he is good at and last season despite playing very well in some games (Millwall/Swindon home), he also was awful in some (Milwall away, Orient home). I know he is not the only player to have bad games but really do not want to see him back. Cannot see Mooney getting the necessary goals, would rather us take a punt on someone like Paul Benson, Benson scored 22 in L2- can you really see Mooney getting that many even in League 2.
If we sign Bauza which I hope we do, then we will have 2 strikers in Akpo and Bauza who are very good at certain aspects of being a striker, goalscoring not being eithers best attribute. Therefore we need someone who is likely to get over 15 league goals. Mooney is not that striker.
[cite]Posted By: Plaaayer[/cite]Think he's a decent enough player.

Mooney while a tidy footballer with some nice touches as evidenced in the second leg against Swindon for example will never be effective in this league (particularly on the heavy pitches from Nov-Feb) due to his physique. The fact that as a professional full-time footballer he is not bothered enough about this to get in the gym three/four times a week (twice a day during the close season) and do something about it means I for one am not unhappy that he won't apparently be around next season.
Sodje does not have his touch and lacks composure in front of goal but given a run will score a goal every two games in this league IMO, which would mean 18-20 depending on how many he played over the season.
i know what you're thinking- ha! not falling for that again! youtube can make anyone look good! but remember, we're talking a free or next to nothing transfer on, i don't know, £1500 a week... not someone costing us £1.25m and £8k a week,
and before anyone says - but the irish league is about Conference North level! true, however there are some well timed runs and well taken goals in there, which shows he is capable.
i'm not a fan of mooney and i hope we get someone better, however if we do sign him then we shouldn't write him off straight away but give him a chance.
Had some good moments, but overall too slow, lightweight, and not enough goals IMO. We can talk about potential (although he is 25/26) but if you applied that to everybody we'd still have Kim Grant up front for us.

"18-20" LOL!!!
If he played every game he would struggle to get anywhere near double figures let alone 20!

When are you changing your name to Barn Door Sodje?
crikey he was just showing off in the end there...
our darkest hour as fans was the booing him, no doubt... to go from people single handedly getting us back to the valley and clearign it up to booing our own players before they have kicked a ball...
and his goal against swindon was total quality as was the brilliant control, touch, and half volley against gillingham i think it was ...
he obviously a confidence player and basically thinks all the fans hate him, im sure that totally infuriated the rest of the team as well...
If he come back we should give him a heroes welcome I say, and see if we can get him to those ibrahamovic chips and henry first time volleys again...

From what I saw of Mooney last season he tended to make goal scoring chances for others by passing or by creating space, he isn't an out and out striker. As others have said he is better with the ball to feet and I would hope that this season with two proper wingers we shall more of a passing game rather than hoof it down the middle. His success will depend on who he links up with

Totally disagree!!
i agree with that

He seems to have a Football brain, but just not the ability to transfer the knowledge into reality.
sorry but I can't be having that. Watch the game again. That performance was bad. Yes he played ok in the home leg but in the away leg was awful.

We need strikers so have to sign some!
Mooney is as good as it gets at our level.
