  • Can we do a vote on this whether we think we should go for Mooney.

I think we should but probably in the minority.

[cite]Posted By: LenGlover[/cite]Who, within budget, are we likely to attract that is any better?

is that the criteria then, we can't do better so sign him? I'd rather sign no-one than him. Anyway this arguement is academic, he won't be signing thank God.
What's your criteria for calling him crap?
  • [quote][cite]Posted By: superdulvertonred[/cite]Mooney is a good player and will do well. I hope we sign him and that the fans give him a clean slate and actually support him. Torres and Rooney are not available on a free so we will have to make do with a forward who is not great.I cannot see us doing any better on a free sign him up Parky![/quote]

  • [cite]Posted By: lancashire lad[/cite]From what I saw of Mooney last season he tended to make goal scoring chances for others by passing or by creating space, he isn't an out and out striker. As others have said he is better with the ball to feet and I would hope that this season with two proper wingers we shall more of a passing game rather than hoof it down the middle. His success will depend on who he links up with

So give the guy a chance.

As Mr Partridge would say... Absobloodylutely!
  • I completely agree with re5 here, i dont think he will score 20+ striker although we need one mooney would be a good addition to the squad

i have said his qualities in the past so not going to repeat it all like a broken record, an ideal scenario for me would be Bauza + a goalscorer(preferably quick), Akpo(as we're stuck with him) and mooney would be a good forward line. Still the main reason mooney didn't really fit in alot of the time is we were lumping the ball forward and he is not going to do much there, granted he could do with some strength but when the ball was played on the feet to him he was a big threat and if we can keep the ball on the floor he will do well
  • Give the guy a chance?...he had 28 games last season!

A proper chance, like support the TEAM and get behind him if a part of it...A little encouragement might go a long way?
  • I can't think of many players in recent years that has divided opinion as much as this. I'm certain it was mentioned in this thread before about his goal celebration with the cupping of the ear (Gillingham equaliser maybe?). Is this the reason some on here hate him so much, has he personally offended you in some way? He seems to be getting a lot of abuse with very few people actually trying to highlight what his weaknessses are and instead revert to name calling.

He didn't offend me, I assumed that was one for the boo boys.

I seem to remember Andy Hunt and Deon Burton having indifferent starts to their careers here.
  • We have seen time and time again that these signings do not work. The few skills he does have are wasted in League 1. No thank you.

  • Mooney given a run in the team with right service will hit 20 goals him Akpo and Buaze could for a good strikeforce for the season ahead along with another aquisition (ideally a kevin philips type character) or a hungry youngster....

His main fault is that he is so weak its almost embarrasing. This fault completely ruins the rest of his game. It means he is poor in the air and isnt great at holding the ball up. His average pace means he is easily out muscled by defenders. His movement is OK, its not as good as people go on about. When he finds a bit of space then he's decent with the ball. Just not for me is David.
  • Would people have rathered Forster or Mooney?

    I'd say definitely Mooney.
  • [cite]Posted By: GRAY9[/cite]Would people have rathered Forster or Mooney?

i'd agree, although i think forster done well and always likely to score. i think DM offers more for the team and believe it or not is quicker, tbf i wouldn't mind either but not both we do need at least one quick forward
  • I said this before and I'll say it again. He has zero outstanding qualities. There is nothing in his game that he excels at. He's an average striker with a less than average scoring record. I hope Bristol Rovers do sign him, as that would possibly remove them from the title race this year.
  • [cite]Posted By: GRAY9[/cite]Would people have rathered Forster or Mooney?

Forster. Southampton away was probably his quietest game and he still looked a better player than Mooney.
  • Forster for me, we need someone to get goals. I know Forster did not pull up as many trees as was expected but if he gets chances he will get easily to 15 goals in a season. Forster and Sodje or Forster and Buaza imho would have been really decent partnerships.

From what I have read and others will know better as I was only at Wimbledon, but Bauza and Mooney do share similar qualities and I would much rather Bauza.
  • Forster did virtually nothing - over the hill, IMO. Mooney has a lot more to offer, but I still hope we can do better, as otherwise we are at risk of ending up with strikers who aren't out and out goal scorers.
  • Forster signed for Brentford so he's not an option anyway.

We need 3 more strikers, ideally all a bit different, as cafcdan18 said, Mooney and Bauza are a bit similar. If Bauza doesn't have any major fitness/injury issues I'd rather take a risk on him.

agree, and I think calling him average is generous. If he played every game for us next season he wouldn't hit double figures. Not good enough.

spot on and what winds me up is that if he wanted to improve himself and become a better player this is something he could fairly easily remedy with some serious gym work over the summer

the fact he can't be bothered means he isn't for me either and Large is right on this one...
  • i think he'd hit double figures :)

MK Dons away 1-0 win...scorer Forster

    Colchester home 1-0 win....scorer Forster
  • I can feel a '++++++Dave Mooney Signs++++++++' coming on
  • Please can someone confirm DM's stats for last season. Starts (subs) and goals? I'd be interested to see what they were, but can't find them anywhere (apologies if they're blatantly obvious on this thread, but I've skipped about 4pp's)....cheers!

How do we know he hasn't done some serious gym work over the summer?

20 starts, 8 sub apps, 5 goals in the league.

    Plus 2 play-off starts, 1 goal.

1 JPT start, 0 goals, but he was up front on his own away to Southampton, completely the wrong way to use him.

    Nice one, cheers Scoham.

Fairly standard record for a Charlton forward over the years!
  • put it this way then

mooney 311.2 mins per goal or 1 goal in every 3.4 games (roughly) so on that basis he should score 11-12 goals in a season.

put it in place that he was injured and played with an injury then went back to Reading and come back..

i dont think he is right for us however i think there is alot of harsh criticism about a player that did not cost us promotion or wembley..

time to cut our cloth accordingly and maybe cut mooney some slack no point griping already is there FFS
