Noooooooooo!!!!! What has the poor bastard done to deserve that?
  • just listening to that gentleman and i get all emotional for years, players and a manager that has gone by...... Sir Chris of Powell a true Hero
  • One of my favourite charlton memories when he scored.
  • Legend. Proper footballer and the nicest bloke on the planet.
  • I loved the goal against Spurs at WHL in 2002, a really good away Premiership performance and despite a messy goal, one of my fave Charlton away games I think
  • What a gent.
  • Him scoring in his last match for us, amazing... what a send off for the true Charlton legend. Great man.

my old man had £5 on 4-1 and chrissy for last goal!

    Cha ching

always really liked the guy - a true gent and good pro. We'll see him at the valley in one capacity in the future but unlikely as manager

  • In all honesty I believe that man deserves a knighthood. Perhaps we should start referring to him as Sir Chris.

which bookie was giving those odds??!!

There was a Downing Street petition saying just that a while back.

I signed it but don't remember receiving any feedback. It might even still be going.

    Linky

i believe this is what you were on about, sadly out of date now
  • athletico addick, what odds did he get for that bet? powell mustve been 50-1 for the last goal alone, plus what 33-1 for 4-1 charlton? = 1650/1 x £5 = £8250! how much did he take home?! that mustve been incredible, i went mental when that goal went in and i didnt have a penny on it!
  • Not sure if he did them as an accy as he only got about £600

    either way he was chugged!

He still does 4-1 every game and usually a defender - hasn't come in since!

"the best year of my career" what are you talking about Chris?
  • Hopefully he only said that to keep the Wet Spam media happy. I'd be very disappointed if he regarded his short spell there better than anything he achieved at the Valley.
  • I don't begrudge him saying that was the best year of his career. Winning promotion while playing in fron of a packed crowd at the Millenium stadium.

He never did anything like that with us. I'm sure he enjoyed his time with us more than West Hame but for a single year, maybe that year was.

  • He played for England with us... would have thought that was the highlight

Queenie is spot on, I reckon.

He's at the West Ham training ground, being interviewed by West Ham biased media for their West Ham readers.
And he's responding to a West Ham loaded question.

All we know is Sir Chris' answer, without knowing the question.

He's always going to tell them what they want to hear.
  • I'd be keener on someone asking him if he fancies a game for us on Saturday!
  • Couldn't do much worse and would give the crowd a lift too

Right ..... and do his famous victory jumps fro the Millwall tunnel !
  • One of the bad decisions that Curbs made was letting Chris go. I do not know the circumstances but I understand that Konch wanted the position which led to a bust up! hence why he left, only to meet up again at West ham.

I remember Chris at the the time saying that Paul was the future at Charlton, why this was so poorly managed I have no idea!. In the same way that Chris could not be part of the future of the Charlton set up, I have no idea!

Respected off the field, as well as on it and Charlton through and through ( by all accounts). Obviously a fan's favourite pity that not all recent Charlton players have such a loyalty for the club!.

Good luck to Chris, whatever he does, he did his bit for us.........
  • Have to remember at the time, Konchesky usually played well in midfield, but he had Hreidarsson and Powell in front of him at left back. It wouldn't have been right just to give him a place there because he was younger. He's surely at the very least a more consistent defender than he was when he was here? Is that really poor management?
  • I always thought Konchesky was better suited to midfield but I can kind of understand why he left. Pity he did as would have saved us from getting in the likes of Spector and later Traore.

As for Powell, great servant, great player and great guy. One of a very few with genuine loyalty. Would love to see him return, imho he would do a job tomorrow but would also be good to see him join our coaching team.

The poor management comes in not being prepared to discuss and persude Konch that his future was at Charlton. Paul has not looked back, and Hermann seemed to loose two yards the last year he played for Charlton! ( although I understand he offered to come back) I understand that there was as they say a 'disagreement' . Paul left to go to West ham to find that curbs had gone there, and still things were 'strained' beetween them. Whatever PR spin might have been put on this, and perhaps I was taken in as well......., Chris was a decent player, and an assett to the team, as well as his playing ability. It all seems a long time, and a different world, I just feel that Chris brings more to the club than his footballing skills on the field. Difficult choices I know, and all sorts of things could have happened!... but is that not why the managers are paid well!. or is that another misunderstanding!
  • The real bad management was allowing Powell to go on loan to WHU to help them gain promotion. We were a club on the rise whilst Wet Spam were in decline and getting into serious financial trouble had they not won promotion. The resurgence of the Hammers coincided with the start of our decline and I don't think that's purely down to coincidence.
