Slater did an interview last year a fair few weeks after SCP came in. IIRC he said that he/the board felt that the club were in a false position when they got rid of Parky and they were certain it was all going to fall apart, hence the decision to let him go. Now, SCP came in and indeed the results went downhill and I don't believe he was ever under any real pressure from the board. Slater felt that we could well have been relegation candidates if Parkys reign continued. The interview carried on along the lines of having to judge SCP when he had his own side rather than what he inherited and that also, whilst it would be good to gain promotion this season (as we have) they didn't seem over worried if it didn't happen (I got the impression that maybe 2 seasons was the timeframe they'd be content with). It was a very good interview explaining a lot about the financial aspects of the club etc.
Anyway, I was chuffed when SCP got the job but worried that if he wasn't up to it then it would be the downfall of a Charlton legend. Same thinking from friends who are Charlton fans. I also felt a bit sorry for Parky in the way he was booted out when we were close to the top of the table, but never felt happy watching the team under him. I'm glad (actually read delirious) that SCP has done such a great job this year and my only worry will be if people turn on him if results don't go as expected next season - by which I mean that some may expect us to do a Norwich or Southampton. Fine if we do, but consolidation is important given what's happened to the club this past five or so years. I think SCP is absolutely the right character for Charlton and I hope that ultimately he can take us all the way.
I wanted Di Canio before thinking about Powell so I suppose my original gut feeling would have probably led to promotion too... this being a chairman lark is easy innit?
