[cite]Posted By: Saints fan[/cite]How does that make him deluded?

Because he believes that Pardew will bring you success ? at the minute you are only as good as the cash you are prepared to put up and Pardew has managed to underachieve with a shedload thrown at it. You only gained the 5th most points of League 1 teams - was it compelling to watch ? The "Southampton style" quote is more likely to come back and bite you in the backside than a Pardew side become compelling to watch.
Our football at times this season was fantastic to watch at times. At St. Mary's we'd stop the majority of teams who came here from playing their game. They'd resort to the 'we never turned up' excuse.

We may have gained only the 5th most points in League One but I will bring up the fact that we never had a pre-season. If the takeover had been completed a month before and we had Pardew in by the end of June I think we would have got to the play offs, but this is all ifs and buts. The fact that we went 8 games at the start of the season without a single win and still made the play off folk brick it was a great achievement.

I always said I would take a mid-table finish this season, as did a majority of Saints fans so I don't really see how we've underachieved. Other fans seem to bring this up a lot but tbh it doesn't matter what fans of Charlton/Huddersfield/Millwall/Pompey think.
[cite]Posted By: Swisdom[/cite]It's good to have a dream - and he is a wealthy man so it's not impossible.

I just think he should be more realistic in the short term and not put unnecessary pressure on the manager - not to mention he will pay over the odds on any new players when he has stated his intentions. Look at Chelsea and imagine that on a smaller scale at your club....what happens when he ups sticks and moves on leaving you with an unsustainable wage structure.

Softly softly catchy monkey as they say
Fair point, I personally think when it is time and the owner wants to sell up that we will be put into good hands but who knows.

Can't disagree that Southampton have played exceptionally well at times this season in League 1.

However, I do believe you've underachieved. Look at it this way: you finished above Charlton in the Championship the previous season. You have spent far more money than we have this season, including signing the best striker in the division. Yet even with the deducted points added on, you wouldn't have finished above us.

Signing the likes of Lambert/Puncheon/Barnard also can't really be used as evidence for Pardew being a good manager. Pretty much every manager in the division would've liked to be able to do this, and I'd wager everyone on this forum would've wanted to sign these players if they were a manager! Yet Pardew will claim this was some sort of transfer masterclass. He's always just signed the top scorers from every division - it doesn't require any skill to be able to pick these players. And as history as shown, it's been very hit and miss in terms of success.
  • I think the big difference between us and Saints in terms of Pardew is that it appears that Saints Chairman is managing Pardew and as a result will get a better performance out of him than we did. the problem will come as the club moves into different divisions and pardew will want to bring in new players. Whilst the american may have the cheque book to buy them he will have a plethora of players that Pardew has brought inot the club who cannot be offloaded because of the wages that they have been put on. So the club will have a high levle of playing staff many of whom will be disgruntled. If Pardew does achieve the impossible and then gets them straight up into the prem. the problem will be further exacerbated, plus will the chairman be able to dig even deeper into his pockets to buy the players necessasry to keep them up.
  • Met the former 'Sooper Al' today at a motorsport event.

I resisted the urge to tell him how much I hated him for ruining our club though I did mention I was an Addick, and he did say "Too bad it didn't work out". Thought I wouldn't add anything else to that. Anyway, my mate is a saint and Pardew said to him who's your favourite player? To which he replied "Gotta be Rickie Lambert, goal machine". Pardew replied saying: "Shame he's had a big summer, he's going to be in for the toughest pre season of his life to lose what he's put on" (Here's hoping that's true and he's the Saints equivalent of Jimmy Floyd next year! Though somehow I doubt it). I then mentioned that if Pardew could manage Andy Reid and not have him balloon in weight then I'm sure he could deal with Lambert. To which he laughed.

Gotta be honest, and admit that Pards came across as an alright bloke, despite the fact I hate him for the situation he put us in. Thought his comments about Lambert were interesting so worth sharing, bit of a nothing convo really but strange he'd say such things about his best player.
  • He said the same thing about him last summer when he came from Bristol Rovers.

The Brizzle lot didn't really like it when he said about Lambo's weight.
  • I suppose he's quite a broad lad so puts it on easily. imo there's no excuse for a professional footballer being unfit though if he is
  • I'm sure Lambert hasn't done much on his summer holidays that he hasn't also done in previous years and he's scored 66 goals in the last 2 seasons so i'm sure he'll be ok.
  • And Saints open with a defeat.....no sure fire thing in this league. Smug.
