[cite]Posted By: Swisdom[/cite]The infrastructure was there already. Big ground and lots of fans

    a good squad already there

he comes along with stacks of cash, outbids anyone else in this division, and fails to make theplayoffs

    not good enough I'm afraid
I might be reading this wrong, but are you saying that the team we came down with was a good one?

That team would have been relegated to League Two.

Admittedly not amazing but llallana is one of the best players in the division. Davis one of the better keepers. You had a few good kids too I recall.
He didn't walk in to a great team - but it certainly wasn't a complete train wreck

Lallana was shocking last season, I think Pardew has made him the player he is at the moment.

he was young and in a team playing poorly - that's all.
This season he's a year older and playing in a winning team. I'm fairly sure Pardew isn't responsible for much there

it seems Pardews transfer policy was "see who league 1's teams try to buy and outbid them". It nearly worked too

How did that seem his transfer policy?

The majority of our players we signed didn't have another club interested, apart from Radhi Jaidi and Lee Barnard.
  • Well "other" clubs were interested in Lambert and Puncheon for sure.
  • [cite]Posted By: Henry Irving[/cite]Well "other" clubs were interested in Lambert and Puncheon for sure.

Only Middlesborough wanted Lambert at the time we wanted him, they didn't want to offer Bristol Rovers the £1m they wanted.

I highly doubt any other club was interested in Puncheon apart from MK Dons of course who wanted to keep him on loan.
  • Barnard had verbally agreed to join us. £2k per week.

    You trebled that

we made it known we wanted Puncheon too - then along came Pards

I believe we wanted lambert too
  • We were interested in Puncheon.
  • [cite]Posted By: Swisdom[/cite]Barnard had verbally agreed to join us. £2k per week.

    You trebled that

I thought a deal had been struck with Leeds until Saints offered Southend a player and cash?
Doesn't matter either way, there were still clubs interested in him.

Parky openly admitted he wanted puncheon and barnard had agreed to come here :L

Prove to me that we trebled Barnards wages.

And you wanted Lambert/Puncheon? How were you going to pay for them?

You're making it seem like we've stole all your targets, I remember Pardew saying something about Parkinson trying to snap Jaidi up under his nose. . . .

How come you never made offers for them then? Only Saints and Leeds were in for Barnard, and again - How would you afford them?

Southend had accepted two offers for Barnard but when we knew about Leeds interest we offered a player. Barnard said he wanted to stay down South too.

So if a club is interested in a player all the other clubs have to respect that and not make a offer for him?

Puncheon we wanted in the summer, but he went to MK Dons in the end. Apparently Parkinson was told once the takeover went through, he'd be able to afford better.

  • Saints Fan,

other clubs, including Charlton, were as you said "interested". Soton offered a better deal or got in their quicker which is fine, that's how it works.

Charlton wanted lambert, most likely couldn't match what Saints paid.

Puncheon was driving to our training ground to sign on loan, the takeover got in the way and he went to MK Dons. We wanted him again in Jan but he went to Soton. Them's the breaks.

Don't know if saints trebled Barnard's wages and I don't believe stuff on the internet about players being on this or that.

this came from Mr Waggott himself. He comes and says hello to the guys around me at half time some weeks and this was brought up
  • fair enough Swisdom.

Saints matched the asking price for Lambert. Could you afford £1m upfront? I don't think so.

We prob done you a favour in getting Puncheon as he seems very over rated by other fans of League One. He started off well, but has had some shocking games. Even MK fans say he was average at best there.

That does raise an important point for debate. Lambert and 35 goals or Steve Waggot to get us up?
  • Ha ha how deluded is their chairman:

"The Premier League remains our stated and primary objective. We are also committed to developing a style of play that is compelling to watch - a style that will ultimately become known as the 'Southampton style"

He's saying he wants to create a new style of football - never before seen. And Southampton will be the pioneers.

I may be out of line - but I think he's going to fail.

Unless he means unique in the crap sense - in which case its entirely possible. If you want to create a new style you need someone a lot more savvy than Pardew! He certainly no Guardiola, Wenger or whoever managed Ajax back in the 90's
  • edited May 2010
How does that make him deluded? He has a vision for the club. It is unlikely to happen but still..
  • It's good to have a dream - and he is a wealthy man so it's not impossible.

I just think he should be more realistic in the short term and not put unnecessary pressure on the manager - not to mention he will pay over the odds on any new players when he has stated his intentions. Look at Chelsea and imagine that on a smaller scale at your club....what happens when he ups sticks and moves on leaving you with an unsustainable wage structure.

Softly softly catchy monkey as they say

Because you are a league one club and no matter how well you do, people are not going to be teaching kids to play the 'Southampton way' in years to come. Ajax in the 70s, AC Milan in the 80s, Real Madrid in the 90s, Barcelona now and erm...... Southampton. Get real!
  • [cite]Posted By: Saints fan[/cite]How does that make him deluded?

Because he believes that Pardew will bring you success ? at the minute you are only as good as the cash you are prepared to put up and Pardew has managed to underachieve with a shedload thrown at it. You only gained the 5th most points of League 1 teams - was it compelling to watch ? The "Southampton style" quote is more likely to come back and bite you in the backside than a Pardew side become compelling to watch.

Our football at times this season was fantastic to watch at times. At St. Mary's we'd stop the majority of teams who came here from playing their game. They'd resort to the 'we never turned up' excuse.

We may have gained only the 5th most points in League One but I will bring up the fact that we never had a pre-season. If the takeover had been completed a month before and we had Pardew in by the end of June I think we would have got to the play offs, but this is all ifs and buts. The fact that we went 8 games at the start of the season without a single win and still made the play off folk brick it was a great achievement.

I always said I would take a mid-table finish this season, as did a majority of Saints fans so I don't really see how we've underachieved. Other fans seem to bring this up a lot but tbh it doesn't matter what fans of Charlton/Huddersfield/Millwall/Pompey think.

Fair point, I personally think when it is time and the owner wants to sell up that we will be put into good hands but who knows.
