  • FFS this is just the thing Charlton needed to happen. Even our board agree or do you think they are lying.
  • [cite]Posted By: ShootersHillGuru[/cite]FFS this is just the thing Charlton needed to happen. Even our board agree or do you think they are lying.

Lying? Of course not. Tell me what they've said first and I may disagree but that doesn't mean I'd think they're lying.
  • We needed investment just to get back where we were - mid table in the Prem.

I felt it was going to happen eventually, just had no idea when, and what sort of money would be invested.
  • Derek Chappell, chairman of the company and Richard Murray, chairman of CAFC, commented: "The board firmly believes that a successful outcome for this transaction would be beneficial to shareholders and employees of Charlton, all fans of the club and the local community as a whole
  • I hope it doesn't happen.

Sorry and all that but the game is becoming some kind of commodity and we are just plankton in the whole thing. We've all got to have a new shirt every two games and 'consume' lots and generally be hobbies for people who want somewhere to go where they will be generally lorded over. This is not a complaint against rich people, Richard Murray's earnings will exceed 99% of CAFC fans but he came to Charlton for the right reasons.

Once we are packaged up, that's it, and we can be passed around to whover wants a hobby.

I was really hoping that our average form would get rid of the people who start booing because we aren't beating Sheffield Wednesday. Sorry but it doesn't,or maybe shouldn't work like that. I'm probably medium vintage on here, first game 1980, but the homogenisation of the game is something I really regret.

When did it start to fall apart? The day we signed Amdy Faye. Not just because he turned out to be not very interested but it was the sort of thing that made us indistinguishable from so many other clubs, signing journeyman players with over-inflated reputations and egos.

Sorry to be so negative but we're all becoming McClubs.

They may believe that, and I don't think they're lying, but that doesn't mean they're right.
  • Yeah. You can have your opinion of course. For my money this board have done us proud and I believe they would only pass on the batton to someone they felt comfortable with. They after all are supporters just like you and I.
  • We are sorely ion need of investment. The question I have is do these prospective buyers really understand the nature of their investment? There's no way they are going to get a return on club like us in the short term, they'd have to pump millions into the club over many years to archive any kind of success.

[cite]Posted By: MCS[/cite]It aint what football is about for me, who has the richest backers, i loved charlton when we were struggling and, when we were just charlton, well we aint now!

Your missing the point, its my opinion, and that what i believe. Football is fucking dead, and these rich mugs have ruined our beautiful game. if your pleased with this outcome then so be it, but i aint.

    I'll second that.

I do agree, and with Brentford.

However, what I would say is that Charlton HAS ALREADY changed, the commercialisation, managers full of spin, for the last few years players who honestly don't give a damn about the history or the shirt. I try and kid myself and pretend otherwise cos I wanna enjoy my team and my football, but the heart and soul was taken out of the game ages ago, and will only get worse.

If we'd beaten Boro in the cup, there would've been something like 10k seats in the semi-final that were reserved for freebees, corporate, press etc. If you weren't an ST (yet had been to plenty of games home and away), you wouldn't've been entitled to a ticket. That's what's happened.

So the way the club's gone downhill the last 4 odd-years is tragic, but beacause of all the above, if we want any success, then this is a good thing. The atmosphere and 'Charlton the plucky underdog' has already died imo.

God I've depressed myself now! Plus really wanted to go to Cardiff, but a job tomorrow has been cancelled and I have to work next Saturday. Would maybe have been quite poignant to stand on a terrace and support Charlton at this time!!

  • My two cents: I understand and sympathise with those that are cautious and even skeptical. But, Charlton will never be Chelsea or Man U and that's because of us (Richard Murray et al included). We have a history of fighting to keep that little thing which makes us special: our Charlton-ness. Money shouldn't be allowed to change that. It's down to us to make sure that, within the mountains of cash, the glamour of world-class signings and the spectacle of premiership afternoons—whatever may come—that we keep what makes us tick.

  • Lets not carried away - it may still never happen.

I share your concerns, but football has changed and that is that. If we don't change too we will never be able to compete. The reality without this is having to sell even more players just to stay in the championship. We are the biggest club in south London and and have always been a Kentish club as well - that's a massive potential fan base. I for one would love to see us have a pop before I pop my clogs.

But I won't be celebrating until the deal is done. And as the guru says, we will still be Charlton. Nothing can change that.
  • Spot on LoOkOuT, Been saying that all night
  • I'm big mates with an 'old skool' Chelsea fan. I've constantly taken the piss out of him for the past 7/8 years about his Club being owned by 'foreigners'. How the soul has been ripped out of his Club, how it's not 'Chelsea' anymore.

But my God how jealous of him have I been as he's seen his team play against the best Clubs in the world - week in week out - how the best players in the world have been playing at SB - week in and week out. His trips all over Europe, his arrogance (and how right he was) when he bought his flight to the Champions League final in Moscow back in August 07 and his excitement about his forthcoming trip to Bordeaux.

I went to SB to see their Champions League game against Fenerbache last season. He was still drinking with his 'old skool' mates pre match; there were still loads of people who spoke to him about 'the old days'. He and them were still 'old skool' Chelsea.

The World is changing. Football is changing.

If this goes through and I get to have half as much fun as he has had following HIS team, then I'll die a happy man.

    COME ON YOU ARABICKS
  • The "soul" of any club is hardly seen in players or coaches that constantly arrive just to leave soon, neither is it embedded within the walls of a certain stadium....It resides in the fans of the club, as long as the fans don´t change the club won´t

Fine, let's do it with 'Charlton-ness.' What is 'Charlton-ness' exactly? For me it isn't 'the glamour of world class signings.' Let's use our money differently.
Let's invest in youth. Let's build the biggest youth academy in the world. Let's get the best players in the world in a more traditional home-grown manner.
  • what Addickted said.

Lets go for it. I would love it for my son to be able follow a team that played in Europe or even had a realistic expectation of doing so.

This is, due diligence aside, the dawning of a new era.

Yes, there are doubts and worries, reasons to be wary and valid provisos to be made but wake up and greet the rising sun while you remember

  • Following Charlton my favourite team....

Great post Henry. I am so exited by this development and remain a true addick whatever the future. Charlton have a big place in my heart big enough to name my daughter Valley. Bring it on....we can moan later cant we.
  • Whenever the geordies sign someone or have some crisis I always wondered where the various characters that seem to be hanging randomly around the ground came from.
  • Totally, we are still the only football team where our main chant is about our ground. These are exciting times and we should rejoice and hope that our beloved club can continue to compete at the highest level,

  • Just came back from holiday today when my brother texted me the takeover news. While on hols I read (once again) the excellent "Battle for the Valley" book (borrowed from my brother cheers mate!!) and reliving all those battles with the council really made me think what a special club we are. Now this!!!! I really hope whatever happens that we still retain that spirit and never forget what makes this football club a special football club.
  • Have read and watched everything develop tonight without comment. Have just got back from a night at the pub that was ruined by a glance up an view of Rothko staring back at me on a 50 inch plasma......

I can't believe the negativity surrounding this. My club has gone this, never the same that blah blah blah.

If ever there was a club and a set of fans who deserve some "cheap" success then it us. With have been through the mill more than once in the last 20 years.

People need to wake, up football has changed, the world has changed. I genuinely believe this will happen and I don't buy all this "wake up Newcastle" crap.

Why can't people just sit back and enjoy the ride?. I don't for minute think we will throw 100m on players. If this comes off we will see players come in. Players that we will all enjoy seeing, players who 2 months ago would have been way beyond our reach.

We won't be following the QPR mold. I just don't believe that our board would sell to the Briatories of this world. If I was a QPR fan and I was hearing "its my money and I'll choose who I spend it on" I would be worried.

Our board have done nothing but good for this club. They wouldn't sell us down the river. If Richard Murray thinks this is the right deal for the club, that is good enough for me.

If we are at due dilligence this will go through sooner rather than later. I sincerely hope that messers Murray et al remain involved. If they don't I hope they line their pockets and walk away. They can do so with their heads held high.

Strap yourselves in, it could be bumpy.....whatever happens its going to be an amazing ride.

Cue deal cancelled and Clem looking like an arse
  • I can understand people's concerns although I don't share them. When RM et al took over we didn't know them from Adam but we put our trust in them and they have delivered big style. Just because the new owners are foreign why do we have to think that it could all go tits-up ? I'm sure that RM and the Board wouldn't sell out to anyone whom they didn't think would be good for the Club. Behind all this, somewhere, is Sheikh Maktoum. He lives and breathes horseracing and has been nothing but good for the sport. He spends millions on it and is passionate about it. Why can't he/they bring the same to Charlton. To be perfectly honest this was gonna happen sometime soon as we know the Club was actively looking for investment. The summer sales to readdress the books confirmed this. I'd rather it was a Dubai consortium than Nigerians or Russians cause at least we know their money is clean. Bring it on I say.
  • I'm delighted for Richard Murray, but... but...

I dunno, it's like we've been stranded at sea, and we've been offered a rescure... by a pirate ship.

I'd trust Murray's judgement, if he remains in charge I'm reassured, but I can't feel cock-a-hoop about this. Be careful what you wish for.

(I've stuck links to Saturday's papers in the links thread, by the way).
  • Better to be a pirate than to join the navy ;-)
  • F&^% ME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I was just playing FIFA and it come on the ticker on the bottom that charlton were being bought out.....

My god guys could this be???

I appreciate the trepidation but to be frank, English football got sold about 15 yrs ago and if we are to compete if we are to arrest the slow downsize of the whole club.

I think this is amazing and I just want the deal to be signed and then I will go out and get absolutely trashed with dreams of Aguero in a charlton shirt lying about how he used to be a fan as a kid.....

we thought we would never see another jorge costa...... if this deal goes through and we can buy the coca cola championship then those days might just return.....

and for the first time since my return to OZ I will be able to see us on the box EVERY week!!!!!!!!!! Joy of joys...
  • I last logged on yesterday morning having been doing work around the house and then went out last night. I wake up this morning to this news. I thought this was a wind up. I must watch Sky Sports News now. I'm excited but apprehensive?!
  • Simon Jordan has had to re-mortgage his club, our club have said banks wont lend to a championship club, feckin will all you sceptics tell me how we are supposed to survive without this. The new owners or no club,no brainer for me.
  • Well said Northstandsteve if the shareholders pass this opportunity up then it would be sad.
  • If Richard Murray and Derek Chapple both say this is good for our club, then so be it. These guys have pumped millions into Charlton, they've personally invested a fortune. They are Charlton fans. They would not sell the club down the river.

Clem has hit the nail on the head. We deserve this, we need this. Face facts, we have to spend money to get out of the Fizzy Pops. None of us want to stay in the second tier of English Football do we? we want to be back up there, aren't you just a bit green with envy when you look at Hull? That could have been us!

We will not lose our identity! Why, because, we are Charlton fans and WE have stuck together in the last 20 or so years. We are unique, there is no other club in England like us, no one has been through what we have. That makes us special. That makes us Charlton

Do you honestly think that Zabeel are going into this blind? They have done their homework. They know what they are buying. The statement on the OS from Zabeel makes that clear.

Hold on tight my fellow Addicks, it's going to be fun.
