I'm enthused by the purchases we've made and I don't agree with selling Alfie (if we do)- but I do see some logic behind it. If we get promoted he'll be 32 - his value is never going to be as high as it is right now. We all know that.
Another thing to consider is Alfie was late into the game. He didn't follow the "academy route" and so he maybe doesn't have the diligence Nathan likes in his players. He wants players that play in zones, not mavericks who drift about - which Alfie has a tendency to do. You can't argue it's not effective for him but I get the impression it infuriates Nathan.
Factor in too that Alfie freely admitted to me he needed to be playing regularly and, it would seem, he either was told he wouldn't be a guaranteed starter or he figured it out for himself and so has been looking to move all summer. We just don't know but the allure of being near his wife's family, presumably being paid more, presumably picking up a nice slice of money for the transfer and working for a manager he really enjoyed. It all stacks up I suppose.
As much as the rumoured £750k fee seems light - it would be the 3rd largest League 1 to League 1 transfer fee ever (Mo Eisa (24) and our mate John Marquis (27) - both in 2019 the only ones higher) so when you look at it that way you can perhaps see some of the rationale behind it.
I'm just trying to see some light at the end of the tunnel here - I just hope it’s not a train coming at me!
So it seems yes. And he was around 25 at the time.PWADDICK said:

Yep very fair point this as well. Luton let Jones do his work. Those other two clubs treated him with suspicion from the start.RC_CAFC said:

I think Jones’ issue at Stoke and Soron was some of the egos of players. The attitudes weren’t right and he didn’t get the respect he felt he was owed. So it was never gonna workCallumcafc said:

I wonder if there was an ultimatum from the board.charltonbob said:
Well Jones has made it clear all transfer decisions are down to him so much as I think scott is a waste of a wage there's only one person to blame for this.thetomahawkkid said:

Assuming it is a decision by Jones...YTS1978 said:If this is true that's a massive decision by Jones and takes king Kong sized balls to make. I really don't know what to make of all this tbh, but we better hit the ground running otherwise the locals will be restless (once again).
Jones made no secret about wanting to clear out the drift wood and replace it with higher calibre.
Maybe the board said we'll do it but you'll have to give us something back for it. Looks like Alfie was the make way. I should think Jones may well have liked to have kept him as a squad player but those the breaks. The news about his missus that I wasn't aware of probably had a large significance in all of this as well mind.
So I suppose the question to supporters in that scenario would be what would you rather have?
A completely revamped core squad with higher calibre players and no Alfie?
Or keep Alfie and dip back into the mediocre pot?2 -

Entirely agree with the comments here, but if May wants to go &/or we are happy to lose to a promotion rival, it shouldn’t be for £750K. If he was a Peterborough player, no way would they be selling him for that, despite his age. Guaranteed goals should mean guaranteed top
price.4 -
I think anyone who watched the back end of last season won’t be overly surprised by May leaving. I felt many times under Jones that Kanu was the main striker over May. Someone of May value was never going to stay at the club if he was not going to be a guaranteed starter.6

More than slightly, but it might contain a grain of truth when the explanation is eventually forthcoming.eastterrace6168 said:

OTT ? We're about to lose the Division 3 golden boot winner, a striker that has scored 20+ goals for shit teams over the last 3 seasons & you think peoples reactions are OTT. I would love to know where clubs selling their best striker, indeed the divisions best striker has worked out well. Maybe people are tired of being in Division three, tired of being told our owners are going all out to ensure we have championship ready players, tired of being lied to by the so called senior management team. Tired of listening to fans making excuses for the smt bullshit, being told, don't worry it's better to have the goals spread around the team then just relying on one player. No, it's better to have a striker who works his socks off, plays whatever role he's asked to & still comes up with 27 goals in a season with the added bonus of having goals spread through the team, why should it be one or the other ?king addick said:
I get that and I dont want to see him go but the reaction to him leaving is so OTT.Callumcafc said:

There is nothing that can be done and you might not like it but you have to get on with it.
We have to see what the club up there sleeve. It might surprise us.
Either way, I am sure NJ has a plan and for now, that's good enough for me.
I personally struggle to feel any heart break over losing any League One player. The last player I was truly gutted about leaving was Joe Aribo because I knew he was going to be a Premier League player at some point.
Ref the Aribo line...Scott Parker for me. Oh and Darren Bent.5 -
don't panic......crafty Charlie boy has stuck a 75% sell on clause in the deal

We won't sign anyone better than May this window. We don't seem to have any interest in replacing CBT despite letting him go 6 months ago. We really struggled to score last season as it is... Can't wait to watch another mid table battle7

So over the top in my opinion! We are much better defensively this season which will make a huge difference!BigRedEvil said:We won't sign anyone better than May this window. Can CL have a poll on those who do/don't want Alfie to be sold, so we can nail these club apologists to the mast at seasons end?
Losing our three best players but at least we will now have the women team playing their matches at the Valley on a brand spanking new pigeon paradise pitch, and ironing board covers will be available to purchase in the club shop.

Owners have to back their manager, and if Jones is happy for May to go then so be it, no qualms with it providing we reinvest it quickly and not on panic signings on deadline day1
-
I don't think anyone actually wants him to be sold, there's just some who can see why he would want to go, why Jones might not want him or why getting in decent money to fund more well-suited players might make sense. Or some of us might be 55 existential crises in and beyond feeling pain when it comes to Charlton.

To be fair, we have no interest in replacing CBT because we’re not playing with wingers any more. If we switch to a lb and lw during the game, it sounds like Small and Edwards can play both positions.BigRedEvil said:We won't sign anyone better than May this window. Can't wait to watch another mid table battleYou may be right about the mid table battle, but I’m confident based on the players recruited, the better science department and the most qualified manager we’ve had in years that this will be the best season we’ve had in a while.3 -

I actually think the deal is done and waiting for the green light from us and Cawley is saying it to help Charlton out with saying it’s not. So that our transfer(s) don’t fall through or ask
for more money

Can’t wait for Leaburn to get sold last day of the window 😂0

The fact we finished the season strong and signing some good players and just putting the right systems in place behind the scenes . I think it’s a good time to be following Charlton with or with Alfie May.Croydon said:
Based on what? Can only be pure hope at this point surely, as the squad is nowhere near where it needs to be.Callumcafc said:
Same. I think we’ll be up there, with or without Alfie.thetomahawkkid said:

There’s nothing dispassionate about taking the opposite approach to all this. I have watched almost every Charlton men’s, women’s, youth games that I possibly can. I have plenty of passion for CAFC.Chunes said:
Yeah I have to say it's getting pretty tiresome that whenever people on this board show passion for the club or one of its players, they get accused of bed wetting, crying, not being a grown man, etc.Braziliance said:
What is all this snobbery about how an adult should feel over Charlton related activity?king addick said:Honestly now, this forum is full of adults....players come and go!

I spend a ridiculous amount of money following and watching Charlton, players like May and Dobson make those drives and shit journies home a bit more bearable.
If people spend their hard earned, and are sacrificing their time and money to follow this club, it's perfectly acceptable for people to be pissed off when the club makes poor decisions.
This lethargic approach of 'crying' 'grown adults' 'bed wetters' etc is a complete piss take. It's fans who give a shit about the team venting, all the sniping is proper frustrating to read.
It's called having a passion. We're not armchair Man Utd fans. In Argentina, people cry when they score a goal!
If you prefer to support from a more distanced place, by all means, but I don't see any need to try and humiliate others fans who are more invested.Regarding what @Braziliance about the club making “poor decisions”. On the surface it does seem bonkers, but no one knows yet whether it’s a poor decision or a stroke of genius. Would it still be a poor decision if we get promoted and Huddersfield don’t?
It’s been quite clear from March / April that Jones hasn’t fancied Alfie. We don’t know why and I doubt we ever will. But he is the manager and he will live with the consequences of his decisions.
Everyone six months ago hated the model of players being forced on a manager and wanted the manager to be able to choose his squad. Now we have a manager with the remit to do it and the same people are upset because the manager doesn’t want the striker every fan loves.
with or with Alfie May ? Well can't say I disagree with that.0
