Absolutely - the surest way of doing it is to hang on to the good ones you already have - dobbo springs massively to mindkillerandflash said:
Everyone goes on about how important it is to have long term planning, and get key players signed up on long term contracts. The flip side is being lumbered with unwanted or unfit players signed up on long term contracts. The likes of Stockley, Aneke, Kirk, DJ and Lavelle.DOUCHER said:
dded to the fact that most of the players we've paid money for and brought in on longer deals, are the one's we're trying to get rid of !!!thenewbie said:
Unfortunately that's probably currently because no-one currently knows who is going to be running the show/footing the bills in the summer. Methven and Co? Sandgaard? A.N. Other?LargeAddick said:
We are building a squad of players that will be out of contract at the end of the season. By the end of the window we will probably have about eight players contracted for next season and one might be Stockley who we don’t really want. In the summer we could need another massive recruitment drive and maybe, hopefully not though, looking for a new manager. Not any long term planning going on.Richard J said:
I welcome these moves as long they don't mean any key player is leaving. Both Bonne and Kane have a six month window to earn a contract.
In squad terms I see Kane as a replacement for Egbo as Manny has a season ending injury.Adding Edun would mean that we have three fit specialised full back options plus Clare as a utility defender/ midfielder.
I would still like a couple of others so that we can build a squad ready to kick on next season.
Its not a great situation but not one the actual hands on side of scouting/recruitment are to blame for or able to change. Its purely makeshift and make-do and that's what they have to work with.

I must be true becuse I have seen it. Stockley playing well and being one of the top League One Strikers and Bonne playing well and scoring goals in the Championship for us. If I haven't seen it, I doubt it but if I have seen it it must be possible. A good manager, which I have an inkling Holden is, will be working out how to unlock the best versions of players that we have all seen is there. Fans are just fickle and write the wrong things off. I agree Stockley has been crap this season but we all know he is better than this season.5

QPR mate said Kane will do a good job for us but will piss everyone around him off. From other comments sounds like he has a reputation.1
 -
Im not worried about Kanes ‘reputation’. Holden doesn’t look like a manager youd wanna piss off.12

Leaburn will make Bonne look awful, or help him look good. You just never know in this game. One thing is for sure, though: we will have to support him, or else it will be another Stockley MK 2 (performance and current fit wise).0

Chelsea u21’s probably!Chris_from_Sidcup said:How would Bonne work in our formation?
Kind of getting used to having Leaburn up top with JRS and CBT either side. Bonne will play centrally so where does Leaburn play? Does he get dropped or is the plan to just rotate them?6 -

There is also the possibility that we'll go back to 3-5-2 with Leaburn | Bonne up frontChris_from_Sidcup said:How would Bonne work in our formation?

With the defensive signings we are looking to be making it certainly looks like it’s an option, especially if we ship out Kirk and DJ - as we then won’t really have the cover for CBT and JRS and to play a 4-3-3.ForeverAddickted said:

If that is the road we are going down, I can’t see where JRS fits into it.0 -
I don’t mind Bonne coming back. He’s half decent and at the moment, probably a slight upgrade on Stockley who for some reason has gone backwards this season. What I don’t want to see is a player with an attitude problem because if things don’t start going his way, I can see the toys being thrown out of the pram. Hopefully, Holden will have him under control and can get him playing like he did when we were in the Championship last time out. That game against Bristol City was probably his best game in a Charlton shirt.1

There should also be the option to change formation within games as necessary.ForeverAddickted said:

That's how Powell built his promotion winning squad. We had a lot of players out of contract so he could bring in better players and not have the problem of getting rid of existing squad members.LargeAddick said:

Just a suggestion if Bonne signs maybe we could try getting behind him rather than the relentless negativity. I don't understand the attitude of some of our 'fans'.56

For League 1, (especially a team sitting 12th) Bonne is a decent signing. Take away the history and people would be pretty pleased.Completely understand the “Head turned” comment and why it would piss people off - it pissed me off! however, the silly meme he posted wasn’t about us, it was about QPR which people need to accept.Like most I agreed at the time that the 2M fee we got we absolutely had their pants down. Worked out lovely we have him back on a free 👀
Martin Sandgaard is one smooth operator.5 -

I do agree. Granted he isnt my first choice but all the same, if he scores, I know ill celebrate it!hoof_it_up_to_benty said:Just a suggestion if Bonne signs maybe we could try getting behind him rather than the relentless negativity. I get that, and would agree with it... But what about the times when we the fans slagged him off before he left the club? - Is laughing / mocking only a one way street? - Would he have done it himself, had he not received it?J BLOCK said:Funny how people are saying to ‘get over’ the fact Bonne laughed/mocked the club twice. Personally, I have more self respect than to cheer and be happy we are signing a player who has disrespected Charlton, his gobby bird and mum also did the same.
If people cant take abuse... they shouldnt be giving it6 -

People need to grow up with the head turned comment. We were in League 1. QPR are in the championship, obviously his head was turned46

Totally agree. I didn't rate him when he last played for us. But in the interim he will have changed and, hopefully, improved. I'll get behind him and hope he's a success.hoof_it_up_to_benty said:Just a suggestion if Bonne signs maybe we could try getting behind him rather than the relentless negativity. Yes, spot on! Wonder why Ronaldo's head was turned to end up in Saudi? Or Messi, to be competing in a weak French league week in, week out!Pelling1993 said:People need to grow up with the head turned comment. We were in League 1. QPR are in the championship, obviously his head was turned

Bonne may be utter ponage , I've called it since the beginning of time
but each and everyone of these shithouse footballers who are and have been a massive part of the most embarrassing shit stained period in Charlton Athletics footballing history get my full support in the ground when it matters and it still doesnt help them, we are shit and they are shit .
I know some may only like positive shit, in spite of next season being our tenth of 15 in the third tier .... I had seen 1 season in my first 30+ seasons following us in the third tier before these pathetic times ..... but on here i think it's more than fair that we can call players out for being carthorse crap if that's how we feel but of course in the ground getting behind them is the sensible thing .
Although Booooooing may help , who knows8 -
It's bonkers isn't it - maybe this just about sums up the TS reign to me........the Chap we chose as our captain to drive us into the Championship might end up with a midseason move, to a team not just in the league below, but bottom and scored all of 7 goals this season.

I can't see us signing both Kane and Edun. I know we've only really got 2 full-backs but didn't Egbo say he hoped to be back soonish? I guess we could move a CB on and it frees Clare up to cover RCB if we go with a back 3/5.1

It's really simple.Chris_from_Sidcup said:How would Bonne work in our formation?

When Leaburn is sold in the next couple of weeks - now the man utd game is out of the way watch the rumours start- Bonne is going to replace him!2 -

They were both free agents though. I don't actually have much of an issue with that comment from Bonne but he was under contract and I can understand why some were cheesed off.mendonca said:

If Stockley goes we need Bonne + 1 more, if Leaburn goes as well then we need Bonne + 2. If they were seriously considering selling Leaburn then it's madness to let Stockley leave.3
 -

Which begs the question why would Stockley go there?mendonca said:It's bonkers isn't it - maybe this just about sums up the TS reign to me........the Chap we chose as our captain to drive us into the Championship might end up with a midseason move, to a team not just in the league below, but bottom and scored all of 7 goals this season. He can’t be forced to go on loan (can he?) and there seems limited benefit to him in the move.I’m not sure it’s accurate or at least the whole story.1
