It's bonkers isn't it - maybe this just about sums up the TS reign to me........the Chap we chose as our captain to drive us into the Championship might end up with a midseason move, to a team not just in the league below, but bottom and scored all of 7 goals this season.

Which begs the question why would Stockley go there?

He can’t be forced to go on loan (can he?) and there seems limited benefit to him in the move.

I’m not sure it’s accurate or at least the whole story.
Family, locality, to regain some confidence in a league he feels he might be able to have some effect.

There could be lots of reasons.

Bonne may be utter ponage , I've called it since the beginning of time
but each and everyone of these shithouse footballers who are and have been a massive part of the most embarrassing shit stained period in Charlton Athletics footballing history get my full support in the ground when it matters and it still doesnt help them,  we are shit and they are shit .
I know some may only like positive shit,  in spite of next season being our tenth of 15 in the third tier .... I had seen 1 season in my first 30+ seasons following us in the third tier before these pathetic times ..... but on here i think it's more than fair that we can call players out for being carthorse crap if that's how we feel but of course in the ground getting behind them is the sensible thing .

Although Booooooing may help , who knows
Agree. This bunch really aren't the worst of this period though. There are at least two seasons I can think of where our playing staff was considerably more inept - the Parkinson/Powell season and the Slade/Robinson one
  • Just a suggestion if Bonne signs maybe we could try getting behind him rather than the relentless negativity. I don't understand the attitude of some of our 'fans'.
Thinking he's not a good signing and supporting him once he does sign are not mutually exclusive.

He's surely as aware as any of us that his current form/performances are... not up to standard. If he can get a change of club even for a short time it might do some good, and he wouldn't need to move his young family either.

And if it doesn't work, then he's got his Charlton contract to come back to.

I can see this move making sense to him.

None of those shit teams you mentioned got to within 4 points of relegation 20 odd games in to a season ...
and this lot somehow managed it with your mate as manager .... shameful it's taken an orrible northerner to sort them out
  • If Stockley goes we need Bonne + 1 more, if Leaburn goes as well then we need Bonne + 2. If they were seriously considering selling Leaburn then it's madness to let Stockley leave.
This is why Aneke is causing such a headache. If the plan is to play 433 more often than not, it's unrealistic to want 4 strikers. But if Aneke is one of the three, it's probably not enough.

Not convinced. If he drops 'that low' its harder to come back. He is at least on the bench currently and any injury sees him reinstated to a  starting position.

Just don't see enough of an incentive for him in this potential move versus staying put. But who knows - not me!

  • Edun, Kane, Bonne + Marriott/Wickham i'd be very happy. Not sure we need much more other than maybe another holding midfielder

Oh no! Not Bonne please.. Everyone will go on about the goals he scored.. He should have had 25 goals, the amount of great chances he had. Still believe if he had put away a couple of those we would have stayed up, and might be a different story now!

But lets get realistic - unless we are paying to wages, this is the pond we are fishing in!
Bonne was good before Christmas in the championship.  He fizzled out just like everyone else that season .
He was pretty decent post covid too. Yes he missed a few sitters, but the miss against Cardiff was the one that really hurt.

Anyway he did better than anyone expected for a player bought to develop as he was thrust in the deep end.

Aneke can play in the 10 role too so just have to use him as the luxury option
  • Bonne actually started the post-Championship season pretty well. I recall a cracking goal away to Swindon in the strange (played on a Saturday) EFL Cup game.

Have a Gillingham supporting friend who expects them to announce the signing of Stockley today
I know he’s not the most popular player here anymore but surely he’s better than League Two?
I could be wrong, but I honestly think he used to be. He simply isn't the same player this season; since that back injury. So full of respect for him as a person and think he was a brilliant player for us when he arrived, but he has just been unlucky. I think him signing for them will be him agreeing with that assessment.

Think you're confusing being a popular player and all round nice bloke, with being a striker who can bag a few goals.

  • I tend to think that this concern about loan rather than perm is overblown. The last few players we paid money for ie DJ, KIrk, Schwartz and Stockley have been relatively disappointing. Stockley not as bad as the others. We have had some great loan players like Bielik, Cullen, Millar , Gallagher, Da Silva, Maatsen and Rak Saki. I think if I was Thomas I would try and utilise the free and loan market almost exclusively too. It makes sound business sense and reduces losses. The key is having a balance and how the manager motivates them. Sessegnon works just as hard as the contracted payers.
I think the criticism of Bonne is OTT. He was OK, he definitely knows where the goal is and his success or not will be as much down to what system he plays in and how Holden manages him. The worry would be that they ship out Stockley at the same time and don't replace him because Bonne is the Washington/ Davison replacement , not the Stockley replacement.

If he can get back to anything like his ability when he was on loan to us initially and most of last season he’ll be one of the best strikers in L2 (maybe the best). I’m not sure how much faith I have that it’s possible unfortunately.

For Stockley it probably makes sense, Gillingham have money and it is maybe his last chance at a decent contract.

If you look at it Ness, JRS and Leaburn don't count in the squad cap.  It means you can have 2 players for ever position plus another 3.

2 extra strikers and an extra center back give you the option of playing 352 as well and counters the Aneke problem.

Even excluding Aneke it was criminal to go into the season with 1 senior striker.  Leaburn has, almost single handedly, kept us out of the brown stuff.
I totally agree, we can comfortably have the numbers, but it's affordability. I'm not sure we can afford a 25/26 man squad. It was definitely criminal to go into the season with only Stockley, because Aneke was injured and Leaburn raw.

I don't think it's realistic to have 4 wingers and 4 strikers. You could start 3 and have to leave out 5. If we consider 352, it's a formation where we're likely to leave out all wingers.

I guess one solution is to go with only 3 wingers and 4 strikers, with Leaburn as an option as a RW given he's played there a few times or even Payne.

Ultimately he has to go where the money is.
Mullin is playing at NL level for Wrexham and is certainly a lot higher ability wise.

Was that the on the turn volley? Even Bowyer complimented it.

Yep, you could be right ......; at pushing 30, mobility knackered by a problem injury, his ambitions will perhaps be tailored to what is best for his family?
