A friend of mine, he passed away in 2019, was a big Bristol Rovers fan and ever since he died we've done terribly against the Gas so glad to change it for once.
We used to play rugby together and I well remember when we went into the clubhouse after one match to discover that our teams had drawn 5-5. More than 50 years ago now but we both supped a few pints that night.
As comfortable as we’ve looked all season and a game to give even the more pessimistic amongst us a flicker down below , can we continue to rise and stay firm for a spectacular finish .
Last night 11 individuals without much coordination or team work but with much effort and determination overcame a team with weaker attack and defence but were better organised and had better passing skills and midfield passing.
1st goal- scored on pinball method.Totally fortuitous. (I agree you've got to shoot to score)
2nd goal- skilful strike.
Whilst it's great to win, the shortcomings of our team will be found out. There's only so many bare knuckle fights you can win.
Or we could be the worst " team" in EFL history to be promoted.
11 individuals yet to be a team.
Couldn't disagree more. We created good chance after good chance and it was a logical conclusion we would get a couple at least. Possession is a meaningless stat. It is what you do with the possession that matters. We are pretty good at winning when we take the lead and this shows a team that has a defensive strength. Having that will mean we fall back on it like we did a bit in the second half as there is a good chance we win doing that. The season stats show that.
totally agree about possession being meaningless stat.
But look at the " effortless "( = well coordinated/planned/understanding of colleagues) way they played out from defence into midfield and to attack (where they were let down) -overrall smooth/accurate/well weighted passes between team mates
whereas
In CAFC individuals battled hard to get the ball-either lost it or managed 2-3 passes going nowhere- before it was hoofed upfield.
Yes individuals like Small are talented and managed to battle their way through. Thats not team work. That individual skill and determination. And where were the options for him when he got there ? well they didn't come into the equation (also Aneke who battled but gave up 2-3 passing options in one move as he was desperate to score). Thats individuals not team work.
It was one of the most straightforward wins I’ve seen from Charlton in recent years, not including Northampton away.
We could, and possibly should, have been 4 up at half time, and BR had one shot on target, was it?
Yes, Chuks had a couple of shots where he should have passed, but that was probably because he knew we were in a position of absolute safety, so why the hell not! He did also play in Kanu superbly.
I think you’re over analysing, and expecting us to be playing at the level of a Championship side. We’re not, we’re a League One side, one that’s found a way to get good results at the moment.
Where I’m with you is that we may not have what it takes to win the playoffs, if we actually get there; although that’s based on what happened in 2018/19, and I think this year the standard in League One is slightly lower. I’ve said that, signing a really good attacking midfielder might make all the difference.
The first half was for me the best we played all season. Then we sat back on our lead which should be expected given defence is now a strength of ours. We still created some great chances though. I felt comfortable throughout although 2 nil can be a dodgy lead.

It did feel like we could have turned the intensity back up if we needed to to be fair - if there had been a goal scored by Rovers I would have expected us to go on and put a few more past them to recover the lead.

Bit of bait there oohaah, which I have taken...🤦♂️
On that note as well, our team is so much better than that 20/21 squad when you reflect.
I'd only have Famewo, Dobson and prime Stockers from that team.
Prime Stockers was the one who scored four or five outrageous headers, but I always thought he’d struggle to maintain that streak, as they were all low percentage chances.
Chuks had a good season (15 goals) and I’d probably also keep Pratley.
Of course we also had Alfie Doughty. We’d all want to keep him. 👍

I would have too but I checked as thought someone would have beaten me to it
Is it possible that Luke Berry is making a vital contribution to the "balance" in the team in an intangible way that we as mere mortals /supporters find difficult to see?

By only running twice a game he creates confusion amongst opposition defenders

And the technical side to his game was severely lacking.

Least Jones has not had the whole team coming over to the covered end hand in hand after a scrappy win over a bottom half team.

We like to shoot ourselves in the foot with stuff like this.
Thankfully Jones didn't say we would beat Blackpool, Jacko actually said we would beat Morecambe and Shrewsbury

Jones: “right Davo, you’re one of our game changers today”
Docherty, whispering in Davo’s ear: “that means your on the bench mate”
