Who was it that said Nathan Jones teams tend to start a season slow and then come on strong after Christmas?
Give them a gold star. They called it.
Hopefully this doesn’t fizzle out. But the momentum we have built should frighten teams. Genuinely believe we could go to St. Andrews and pull out a one nil win at the moment.
Not to blow my own horn but I said something similar to that. Luton were 17th at Christmas the year he took them up from league one I believe.
can I have my gold star?
This isn't true. NJ left in the January of their League One promotion year when they were in 2nd position. Mick Harford finished the job and got them promoted to the championship. He also left in the November of their championship promotion season and then Rob Edwards got them into the playoffs and up to the Prem.
I'm not taking away any of the work NJ done at Luton as he was heavily involved taking them from League 2 to the Premier League but he actually hasn't won any promotions apart from the League Two one. Something that goes under the radar a bit
Small has been outstanding although he still needs to work on his decision making and final ball, this has improved from where it was. My concern now is that if we don't go up can we hold on to him.
As much as we and the club say it would be best for his development to stay here for a season or two, it's a short career and opportunities arise. If a championship club come in they have the money to draw him away.
Hopefully he will sign that contract, but I think it will go to the wire!
One point off 6th, we are on our way .. That was such a convincing performance from every one of them last night, and could have been even more convincing but for some heroic work by their keeper.. So yes, bring on Blackpool, onwards and upwards I say...COYR

This season must be the best one he's had since those Luton days, his Southampton and Stoke spells were pretty poor.

Easily the best since Luton I would think. Southampton couldn't wait to get shot of him and his record at Stoke was abysmal....including getting beaten 3-1 by us at The Valley.
I thought the referee was also excellent yesterday. Allowed the game to flow.
One of the best I've ever seen in charge of a Charlton game, he'll probably be sacked by the EFL for competence!!
He's only reffed 16 EFL games but already 5 of those have been in the Championship. Had to send off a Luton player and all so unafraid to make big calls, but notably that is the only red he's given (and only given 2 penalties) which speaks to a certain strength of mind and control of a game. Also, played professional football, which possibly explains his leniency in borderline yellow/non-yellow cases (and his understanding of when to let the game flow)

There will always be that question mark over his loyalty in my eyes because of the way he left Luton both times. Maybe he's learned from his mistakes as he's clearly a "builder" in terms of building a team over the long term.
I do think our set-piece play is getting better...... feel we are becoming more dangerous from our corners and free kicks........ was that Macca header straight from the training ground........ where he ran in an arc out from the 6 yard box back towards the penalty spot and drew good save from their keeper? Also feel more comfortable when we are defending set pieces. And we seem more alert to creating something and defending from loose and second balls......?
For context... At the time of the year in 2011/12 we had 12-clean sheets / in 2018/19 we had 10-clean sheets, although thats based off games up until the 28th January in each season, rather than the amount of games played.

More ex players as refs please! Not talking about PL players but those who have played a decent amount of EFL/NL games so understand what they’re refereeing
Thought every player was superb last night. Matty Godden took his chance to impress and will give Jones a selection headache this weekend. Also credit to Kanu who came off the bench and was superb. Gillesphey rock solid and after I've been saying all season he's the most one footed player I've seen at Charlton, Josh Edwards scores a great goal with his weak foot. Small could have had a hattrick last night, if he can improve his finishing, he will post some serious stats. We're in a really good place after what was a dreadful performance away at Rotherham, long may it continue
When you are strong defensively, as we are, you get a couple and don't get the third, you make sure you don't concede. Which is what we did. It was a good performance.
Last night 11 individuals without much coordination or team work but with much effort and determination overcame a team with weaker attack and defence but were better organised and had better passing skills and midfield passing.
1st goal- scored on pinball method.Totally fortuitous. (I agree you've got to shoot to score)
2nd goal- skilful strike.
Whilst it's great to win, the shortcomings of our team will be found out. There's only so many bare knuckle fights you can win.
Or we could be the worst " team" in EFL history to be promoted.
As comfortable a win that I have seen since Walsall, based on a solid defence allowing attackers to express themselves. Respect to Gillespie who was solid today, slightly concerned we lost our shape a couple of times in 2nd half, but Small and Ramsey do like to attack. Glad we are now making better use of Godden, who has a better scoring rate than one Alfie May this season. Chuks has been influential when coming on, but not needed last night and will know should have used his experience to play in others, not wastefully shooting. Finally agree we had a ref who will go higher soon.

11 individuals yet to be a team.
Couldn't disagree more. We created good chance after good chance and it was a logical conclusion we would get a couple at least. Possession is a meaningless stat. It is what you do with the possession that matters. We are pretty good at winning when we take the lead and this shows a team that has a defensive strength. Having that will mean we fall back on it like we did a bit in the second half as there is a good chance we win doing that. The season stats show that.

I'm not surprised an Inigo Calderon coached team had plenty of possession and looked decent on the ball given his background at Brighton but they never looked to do anything useful with it.

Team spirit is definitely there - we are finishing games well and players work hard.

Confused how someone can describe last nights game as a bare knuckle fight. It was as simple a win as you could get, and the team did superb to ensure the win and clean sheet. They'll have plenty of energy left for Blackpool game.
