POST-MATCH THREAD: Charlton Athletic v Bristol Rovers: Tuesday 28th January 2025: KO 19:45

edited January 28 in General Charlton
This match was over in the first half. Bristol Rovers, who’ve had the best of us for a little while now, started well but soon fizzled once the in-from Addicks found their feet. Charlton opened the scoring through Matty Godden on thirteen minutes. Godden poked the ball past the Rovers keeper from close distance through Tyreece Campbell.

Thierry Small continued his fine run of form, beating his man, whoever they threw at him, consistently and putting in crosses and shots almost at will. It was his counterpart on the left, Josh Edwards scored Charlton’s second on thirty-nine minutes when he found himself at the edge of the left hand side of the Bristol box, dropped the shoulder to shoot with his favoured left, then moved to unleash a beautiful, well-placed rocket with is right that found the back of the net. Charlton were comfortably in control from then on out.

Three or four good chances in the second half could have seen a rout but still the two goal advantage was more than enough to come away with the three points and another clean sheet. Rovers had much more of their share of the possession in the second half but Charlton remained largely untroubled nonetheless.

Up the table we go.

  • Easy tonight some very good performances but Chucks looked awful.

  • I know you won’t believe us… but the reds are going up.
  • Buzzing. Coyr
  • Comfortable. Never once threatened by a poor side. Job done
  • Who was it that said Nathan Jones teams tend to start a season slow and then come on strong after Christmas?

Give them a gold star. They called it.

Hopefully this doesn’t fizzle out. But the momentum we have built should frighten teams. Genuinely believe we could go to St. Andrews and pull out a one nil win at the moment.
Luton fans also said that Jones tends to persist with a formation (3-5-2, or whatever you want to call it in this case), and that the players do eventually come round to his way of thinking - I do think he's still stumbled into the winning formula a bit, but dont think that does him or the team enough credit... and we're potentially seeing now what the Luton fans were talking about.

Thing is they weren't a poor side, we just made 'em look poor, and should have been 3 or 4 up by the final whistle...

  • Should have had a couple more goals. Some poor decision making up front in second half.

Ramsay very impressive tonight. Small looking very dangerous.
Should have had a couple more in first but their keeper made a few great saves.

2nd half too many players looked knackered - subs were the right ones but could have come a bit earlier.

Comfortable win and first half one of the best in ages.

I don’t think they were very good to be honest. But I also take your point. We didn’t let them do anything

Early goal probably helped us... But its easy to forget how much they pressed us to begin with... Barely gave us any time on the ball - But then we were no doubt smart enough for once to move the ball quickly when we could, and exploit the space they left with that press
