Can always count on the “If only we had May” comments to come up if we don’t win a game…😴
And I'll tell you when they stop. When it becomes evident to most people, led by Curbs, "where the goals are coming from".
  • We missed Jones and Coventry and thought Leaburn made a positive impact. Felt good at the end and applauded a good attacking second half. Docherty doesnt do enough. Anderson makes mistakes but you cant fault his work rate. Taylor good on dead ball stuff but needs to be stronger in open play. Leaburn needs more games. Onwards and upwards.
  • Good performance overall. Joke defending to allow the ball to bounce to gift them the penalty. Should have been cleared we can argue if it was or wasn’t but we need to deal with that better. To be fair apart from there keeper being shot by a sniper to go down he had a pretty decent game and was the reason we didn’t win. We had enough chances to win comfortably and on another day we would. At least we’re getting the chances. Just a shame it takes us to go a goal down before we go forward. Couple of players not on it today but overall we were pretty ok.
Exciting game to watch and come on Charlton.

So, when we start getting the goals for column looking healthier we can all forget about Alfie May can we...great, i've already moved on, and will be forever thankful for his contribution to our great club...but this if only stuff is rather tedious now...

Rather than who’s gonna score the goals, it’s more a case of who’s gonna see the goals.

Both yesterday and Birmingham game I missed both our goals taking my son to the toilet. In my last four games all I’ve seen is a Luke Berry stoppage time consolation. My two away games so far have drawn blanks.
  • I can definitely see Taylor and Coventry playing together in midfield, with both able to play the more defensive role and break forward. Got to be a better option than Docherty and Campbell.
  • Taylor excellent on set pieces and had a good game. Like to see him stay in with Coventry starting at Barnsley on Tuesday.

Anderson/Campbell/Doc in the first half a lack of showing for the ball and when they did not enough in terms of getting forward and creating chances.

2nd half better with the changes with doc and A Campbell going off and getting Berry on the ball and moving TC out wide allowing him to cause problems running at them. Good to see Leaburn back. Should have scored that chance when Dixon played him in with the back heel.

Hopefully the Ramsey injury is not serious and Jones is back this week.
  • Massive difference in our second half performance. Starting with a midfield of Alan Campbell, Docherty & Anderson playing offers no creativity or forward momentum. Hopefully NJ will look to only play 2 of them 3 moving forward

Quite obviously if Alfie May had been playing then your toilet habits would have been entirely different.

Sounds to me like you’re the problem.
  • We are six points behind (my) target for automatic promotion.
That means winning every remaining home game, and drawing every remaining away game bar three, which we have to win.

I was unsettled by the absence of Jones yesterday, but Mitchell and Dizzy did well, but then came the disaster of Ramsey. Luckily REG played better than he did at Cambridge, plus scoring the goal.

Those of us who have consistently said Taylor takes a better set piece than Coventry were proved right. I wonder about dropping the pretty meh Campbell (not TC)and playing both Taylor and Coventry. Or even drop Docherty who has hardly made much of an impact so far.

Tyreece Campbell was our best player yesterday in my view. It might make those who gleefully wrote him off previously think again. If for example QPR came in for Tyreece in January, how much would you demand? For me it would be quite a bit more than we got for Alfie May.

Dixon and Leaburn (Leaburn for longer) were great to watch yesterday.

The Stockport support was arguably the best away support so far this season.
  • Only saw the last half hour - did Godden miss chances or just not get involved in the game?

On the May comparison, even if we kept May and he scored 25 in the league, that could still be 21 league games he’d fail to score in, and fewer than that if he scored 2 or more in a match. I doubt Godden will score as many as May did last season, but he’s capable of 15+ if the service, game time and right partner alongside him.

Once Leaburn is ready to start I’d like to see him alongside Godden. I’m sure with Leaburn up there we’d create more chances. Sounds like Taylor played well and his set pieces were dangerous, that could make a big difference too.

Sounds like the better football has continued too rather than reverting to long ball. More to improve on but there’s enough there to not completely give up on this season.

Just not very involved. Looked better with Leaburn on the pitch. He can't hold the ball up so he needs a physical player next to him.

We seem to always look a different side with a proper focal point up front. As soon as Leaburn came on we totally dominated and it was wave after wave of attack. What a crying shame we brought in Ahadme who can't do the job.

Hopefully that's Miles fit for the season now because he was excellent.

  • I can see us bringing in a new left sided centre half in January, I can also see us bringing in a more conventional playmaker, I do feel like Jones has identified our weaknesses at this point. Feeling a lot more patient than after the 3 back to back losses after a great performance yesterday
  • Definitely need another CB in January. Potts barely featuring and only plays CB in a 3. Mac cannot play as a 2. CAM and CB are must for the January window
  • Taylor excellent on set pieces and had a good game. Like to see him stay in with Coventry starting at Barnsley on Tuesday.

Unfortunately this seems unlikely. As well as NJ's comment post-match, somebody on here posted pre-match that he has a lower left leg stress fracture and out for 8 weeks. When challenged on his source he replied "Horse's mouth, I'm afraid". I don't know the poster at all but he's on here long term, not an excitable social media kid, sounds like he sits in the West near the action, and correctly called that Edwards hadn't broken anything after his injury. And while I've been critical about our injuries record in the past, this sounds like a really random problem , just as Ramsey's was an in-game incident that could happen to anyone. Grim. But that's why we have a squad. Birmingham were without Stansfield yesterday (injured on - get this - England U21 duty, (FFS)), and they didn't seem to miss him...

Hardly surprising after yesterday because if May had been playing I'd have put good money on us winning that game.

His replacement Godden had a stinker and our other new striker Ahadme had probably his best game of the season for us sitting up in the stand.

I think Jones was mad forcing May out and it is a decision that will come back to haunt him big time.

May has scored 1 in his last 8 for context.

10 games, 5 goals, 3 assists for wider context
413 games, 182 goals for even wider context?

It’s properly boring that every time Charlton don’t win, his name gets brought up. Even promotion winning teams only win roughly half their games so I guess I’ll have to strap in for another 20 odd (at least) post match threads where discussion descends into Alfie May chat.

It’s like this forum’s Godwin’s law, for a lower League journeyman striker.
I mean yesterday it is quite reasonable considering the amount of chances we couldn't finish.

Can't really say he wouldn't have received any service yesterday like people would normally do the other weeks...
