Flat performance, missing the penalty (why on earth did TC take it, could see he wasn't ever going to score that) and a good strike from them but we was slow to get out, not massive difference between the almighty league one god squad superteam that is Birmingham
Can't see what Karoy brings other than running currently, hopefully we can see Berry, Doc and Coventry on saturday and going forward We dont really have anyone who you could call a penalty taker
Thought Birmingham were much better at playing out from the back, but they produced little around the box (which we also defended very well).
They scored from 30 yards... and we missed a pen ... we missed the easier chance and they scored a worldie. What can you do? That was the material difference.
But not saying we were unlucky, think it's clear to everyone that we are severely lacking some quality in the final third. The fact we have six strikers yet only two of them are both senior and reliably fit... We know that will cost us. Kanu & TC are nowhere near the point of their careers where they will be regularly impacting games, Leaburn is coming back from a potentially career-changing injury, Chuks is... Chuks, and that leaves a 33-year old Godden, and Mr. Gassan Ahadme - who we have spent 1 million pounds on, and for which we're yet to really see any kind of justification for that kind of money.
It also looks like we mostly don't want the ball. We look like we'd rather win it high up the pitch and try and score from there. But to counter at that kind of pace, you need quality - which we don't have. And when we have possession deeper, we can't give it back to the opposition soon enough. I sincerely hope there is a lot more to come in this department, but I sat very close to NJ today and he was not objecting to some of the hopeless balls being played tonight.
I'm not sure if we need a creative player per se, but we 100% need a lot more quality and composure.
People say it's early and you can't judge. But glaring issues are glaring issues, and they have been season after season.
Having had a night to reflect on the game, and listening to NJ's interview, I kind of get where he's coming from. Immediately after the game I was disappointed at the performance, the result wasn't as important. This morning, I have to say, NJ did sum the game up well. If we had scored the penalty it would've been a different game, not sure if it would've been a different outcome though. We were the better side in the first 20 mins and they didn't like our high press, then they score a screamer and the game turned, BUT, unlike last season, we didn't capitulate. However we didn't really look like equalising either. Brum have spent millions, I don't think they were miles better than us, and I feel if we can press on Saturday like we did last night, we have a great chance of going 2 from 2 in the League. We have to get out of this poxy league, so I don't care about cup runs or pizza trophies. We do need Godden in the side ASAP, and get Potts signed up with Feaser and Ness moving on,preferably this week. I'm not as peed off as I thought I'd be this morning, it's only 1 game, it was a cup match, and this season it's not important.
The calibre of 19yo Khela's strike is being slightly overlooked, due to the calibre of the closing down.
We had similar opportunities with time and space (Berry, TC, Small , Coventry). Not one tested the goalkeeper. They tested the fans heading/catching ability, mind!
We are creating chances, as we had so many shots over and wide of the goal. Lots of shooting practice before Orient I hope.
TC apart from the missed pen had a lot of energy pace and getting in good positions, Berry likes to arrive late and get a shot off so let’s hope he improves on that.
Need to get a couple strikers off the mark with goals and hopefully they can get into a purple patch.
These are pros. If they need desperate last minute shooting practice at this stage then there’s something wrong.
And a couple of people have mentioned that Adhame cost £1m. That can’t be right surely?
Defensive structure, combative mentality, increased resilience and we’re dealing in 0’s and 1’s with goals conceded (a quality long range effort is the 1 by the way). That’s a huge turnaround from previous seasons. Strong foundation to move forward from, now need to see signs of how that is going to happen in possession.
Zach Mitchell’s willingness to step in from outside CB and commit a forward / midfielder to engage, created a space which he quite happily dropped a little pass into. Territorially that made an enormous difference, it made everyone play further forward including wingbacks which is key in this shape. Without that, the gaps between the defence and forwards were far too big.
It makes me wonder… Did people not realise this is the kind of football we were likely getting with Jones?
His Luton team that won league 2 and was winning league 1, (that team is the most comparable to us in terms of quality for the level), were much more expansive and good to watch.
His Luton championship team were more direct and probably a bit more like we are seeing now. But they also wouldn’t have had many games at all where they had more of the ball so could win a lot of games playing that style at that level.
That is not the case for Charlton in league 1, there will be games where we have 55%+ possession and the concern at the moment is that we aren’t going to be able to create enough chances in those games. It’s still early days and Saturday will be the reveal. I think crossing could be an avenue we exploit with Edwards delivery into Ahadme/Aneke, but we need other ways of playing/scoring goals against a team that is happy to defend.
We need to be better than relying on low margin 1-0 wins when we play against weaker teams, that’s not a sustainable approach. So let’s see how we deal with Orient on Saturday as that will probably reveal whether all the moaning is warranted or actually maybe Jones had a plan all along
I'll wait to see what transpires on Saturday, but realisation setting in that we're not good enough to go up. Only hope is Ahadme and Godden staying fit and firing.
We are a work in progress still. We again seemed much more solid and that is the base to
start from and I think we will improve on the attacking side as we go but if
you don’t have that solid base, you will not do anything in this league.
Onto to Saturday and if we can get out some players out ASAP and get
a few more in that quickly that would be great.
I think the criticism is overdone on here. We should have won the game, we had more clear cut chances than Brum and we missed a penalty. Apart from a couple of goalmouth scrambles Mannion had nothing to do all night. Obviously we struggled to convert what we created especially in the first 30 mins. I was disappointed with Kanu who didn’t really contribute much all night , he has to be more involved than that and given his goal scoring record he should have taken the penalty. I thought Coventry had one of the best games Ive seen from him, but he’s not going to score goals is he ? The midfield needs some goals from somewhere, I still think that’s a missing piece of the jigsaw
Going into yesterday's game I'd convinced myself I wasn't bothered if we won or loss. During the game you obviously get caught up in the emotion so decided to sleep on it before reflecting.
Now with a sleep behind me, the result and being out is definitely not something I'm bothered by. So looking at the performance, until their goal I thought we were comfortably the better side. Created much the better chances. Why TC was on the penalty is a separate issue. Not sure anyone seemed to know who should be taking it at the time. That's a problem Jones needs to resolve and is on him.
After the goal we offered barely anything and even when they went down to 10 men I didn't feel we looked likely to score.
Defensively and from an organised perspective from the 2 games so far we look significantly better. In the final third there are questions but I'm not completely negative, yesterday up until the goal we created more than on Saturday. We also need to look at the 2 teams we've faced. Wigan and Birmingham both should be at worse half decent, and in Wigan's case looking at their defence that should be the strongest part of their team.
Will it be fun watching this team? Possibly not, but anyone that was expecting 5-4's every game has not watched or seen a Nathan Jones team before.
Away from home I think we will do much better than last season when teams try and have the ball against us and are more attacking. My biggest concern right now is at home against teams that sit back and let us have the ball. I'm not sure we have the creativity or individuals to make something happen and get us a goal.
I know the whole first goal is really important cliche but for us I do feel like it will be very important. I don't see us losing as many leads as last season, but I'm also not sure if I trust us to come from behind as much either.
Find it strange we’re questioning a bloke who turned us from a heap of shit to a team that went unbeaten in however many games even if we didn’t play so well, and who is the first manager in years with a proven track record in our league and the league above. All because we lost a cup game to a wonder goal and to a team who spent 20 million!
Annoying to go out but in the long term, do we really care? We’re not going to win that cup and a Man Utd away type fixture isn’t floating my boat. All about promotion. Get the Wigan team on the pitch for Orient and forget last night ever happened.
My personal guess is that Jones has been focused primarily on creating a solid and more reliable team to defend as a unit. The flair and pizazz can (hopefully) then be added on.
Of course it does remain to be seen whether he succeeds in this, and in the meantime we are stuck with an attack based on percentage play which is not thrilling to watch but I'm still optimistic that this is not Jones "finished product" and happy to wait a bit longer.
The fact that the one goal we did concede was lovely long range well struck one is much less concerning than if it had been down to a misplaced pass or a defender wandering out of position for the 78th time, as was the case pre Jones.

Agree and makes sense to work on being solid first as you are always in with a chance of nicking a goal and winning like Wigan. The other part will come I am sure.

We still do not have the right balance and we are very boring.

Then the 2000 Brum fans belted out 'There's only one Alfie May'
Felt ashamed. We all know that he was the shining light in a dark room filled with shit. He didn't deserve that.

No like a centre forward that holds up play. Kanu and TC are not that.

As others have stated and previously on other threads I wonder where the goal threat is coming from. Time will tell I guess.
Predictable result
