REG and Small were players I thought would be in our strongest 11 this season, and I was surprised to see them not involved the last 2 weeks. Tonight showed why they are firmly second choice

Birmingham have just spent ten zillion quid and loads of their signings were on show. They're a frighteningly good L1 side and we largely matched them while not playing well. Chin up folks
Feel like we're going to hear this a lot this season.

I didn't think they were amazing outside of a good 15 minutes after they scored. Same with Wigan on Saturday.
And they didn’t open us up for any really good attempts on goal. We did well to limit them in that regard and sometimes a bloke pings one in from 25 yards. That’s football.

Think you were watching a different game to me.
On the face of it, it was a penalty save that stopped it from going to a shootout... Like Leuth says, given the money they've spent, the gap wasnt that impressive.

Mannion didnt really have anything to do again

    What a load of shit
  • No point on getting over excited, but we were outplayed all over the park, defence looked ok but midfield creativity was non existant, and nothing at all up front, just do not see were the goals and opportunities are going to come from.

They looked a class above in the parts I managed to watch via dodgy link.

Poor second half but Birmingham are nothing to be scared of in this league.
I expect lots of teams will be saying that about us this season.....

"Restrict them to shooting from 20 yards"

" don't worry about their wingbacks crossing"

I think we played exactly the same as the Wigan game.

Good in defense, zero composure up front. We will win some games (Wigan) and we will lose some (Birmingham). The worry is again creating chances.

Alarmingly one dimensional. No-one who came into the side has really staked any sort of claim for a starting spot. Berry ok first half but vanished in the second. Small absolutely woeful. Zero threat up front and at times Birmingham passed through our midfield far too easily. I still don't really get Anderson. We need some pace and flair in central midfield and we can't play that style without a big man up front.

Birmingham had a fair bit of possession, but did Mannion make any saves of note?

Decent, competitive game. Birmingham the better side but not by much. I think for the most part we defended well. They scored a worldie. We took a Michael Grayesque penalty. Really sums it up.

The last two games have been a terrible advert for Sky streaming services. Picture quality terrible, intermittent buffering. I work from home and have one of the best speeds / connection packages available. I will never buy any streaming product from Sky based on this service. Dreadful.

Gotta be one of the worst displays of shooting I can remember, starting with the penalty.
Awful game, pretty awful performance, but there was a good pass by Aneke near the end. And that’s about it.
I think Nathan Jones will have learned a lot tonight. I imagine he’ll be desperate to unload some of these players.

Zach Mitchell looked composed when he came on so that's something (that cross aside).

Heavily rotated Birmingham beat heavily rotated Charlton by single goal thanks to a 25 yard effort from a 19 year old right back playing out of position that wouldn’t be able to do it again if you gave him 100 attempts.

Yeah I’m over this one already. Not sure others are going to be though.
Yeah, all that's true. But it is maybe just slightly concerning that in two games now we haven't been able to create a single noteworthy chance when we've got the ball.
Law of averages says that isn’t going to continue.
No. The law of averages says if you keep creating chances and missing them then give it time and they will start going in.

Not sure the same rings true if you're not creating much in the first place.
Silly me I thought you were talking about missing chances. I now reread and realise you’re talking about “noteworthy” chances which is completely subjective.

The stat I’ve got in front of me says we’ve created 3 “big chances” and allowed 0 so far this season.

    "BIG" chances. Nice one.

How many chances did we create when we had the ball and how many came from opposition mistakes? A chance is a chance and a goal is a goal, but my point is that the only chances we seem to get is when - largely from our good play - we force the opposition into a mistake. Which is fine when they've got the ball, but when we've got it what do we do?

WE HAD ONE SHOT ON TARGET
    THE MISSED PENALTY
Simply we aren't good enough up front

Birmingham deserved to win. Not a huge amount in it but there we go. If you can’t score your penalties what do you expect? Nor exploit the man advantage. The telling factor might have been losing the toss and kicking the wrong way.
Still, we play them at least twice more this season.

Hopefully that puts an end to the Campbell as a striker experiment, and hammers home that we need better than Anderson in the middle of the park.

I'd expect an improvement on Saturday.

  • Birmingham were clearly the better side at attacking although we largely limited what they could do with those attacks. We defended well for all but their goal (Berry should have closed down quicker). We had chances but the finishing wasn't anywhere near good enough. Also if TC had buried that pen, then Brum may not have dominated as much as they did. At the end of the day we lost to a team that has spent more than the rest of the league combined by 1 goal whilst not playing our full strength team. For me, Small, Reg, TC and Kanu were largely poor today unfortunately. Thought Coventry did well as did Jones.

Managers change, players change but our utter gashness in cup competitions continues unabated.
Tbf we just had a cup run that ended at Old Trafford.
Plus victories over QPR and Brighton.

Could say the same about Birmingham who had seven shots on target.

Being able to create so many chances on goal (when shouting home about the number of efforts on target), yet being unable to finish six of them... Is pretty wasteful

Missed pen and a bolt out the blue the difference between the two sides .. we had the first half they had the second which is understandable when the other team had to push forward ..a team that spent the money they have was not impressed .. the ref was shite and seemed to give them every 50/50 …. lots of positives for us..

So other than a penalty we’ve barely created anything across 2 games.

Really need to see more going forward on Saturday. I hope Berry starts, he’s the only one with a bit of invention/creativity about him. I’m worried about how we are going to break down any team that sits in against us and doesn’t hand us chances by giving the ball away at the back

It’s so predictable isn’t it? And can you imagine the pelters that Apples would have got deciding TC is the answer to our goal scoring problems (now we’ve sold last season’s top scorer). Jones/the club are on thin ice here with the May sale. How many games for them to prove that was a good decision for the club?

Even if you play shit, you should still be scoring if you get a penalty.

Small was crap tonight for the most part, nothing came off for him
