Watching the highlights, quite an old school run chase that. All about getting the win, whereas early in the Bazball era it was more about the entertainment.

Going forward, I wonder if Pope's place could come under pressure. If Smith struggles with the gloves in the sub continent, he'll keep his place as a batsman, indeed he could move to No 3.

Josh Hull has been called up into the squad as cover.  That's a very McCullum-Key selection, probably with the Ashes tour in mind.  He's only 20, but a 6ft 7in fast left-hander is a great option to have.

Josh Hull called into the squad to replace Mark Wood. Another one of Key's left field picks - 6ft 7 left arm seamer from Leicestershire.

"probably with the Ashes tour in mind"

The current mentality seems to be that everything that isn't the Ashes is a warm-up. And that being a good bowler is secondary to being a tall and quickish bowler

What's Sam Cook or Jamie Porter done wrong? Hull just seems completely vibes based as a pick.

Last vibes based pick was Smith and he’s done well, before that it was Bashir. Plus if a 20
year old is good enough to actually play well then he could be in the squad for a decade which would be great

I suppose the argument would be that they both made the mistake of being born in the wrong century.

Smith was NOT a vibes based pick for fuck's sake

I actually called Bashir as a bolter (search his name on here) based on seeing his stuff and England having no good spinners

Agreed, Smith was a clear batting star, whereas Hull is much more of a punt. Smith is 24 too, not 20.

Smith at WK is the vibes element, there was never any question about his batting though that’s true

Bashir had a similar record before India. They seem to have a very track record for picking on ability and ceiling. Can’t imagine Hull will play in any case, I expect Stone will come into the side

Interesting that Sam Curran is playing the current county game. An attempt to get back in the Test team?

Jamie too old now and lost bit of pace.

Sam Cook can feel aggrieved though.

My natural instinct would be to select a more established performer.

That said James Anderson had not played much first class cricket prior to playing for England and look what he went on to do.

Isn't Jamie injured anyway at the moment?

Anderson had only played three one-day games before he was picked to play his first ODI for England. Hull has played nine FC games.

England have just won their fourth straight Test match, easing past Sri Lanka, following a 3-0 drubbing of the West Indies.  So, it's time for... Guess the Headline in the Sydney Morning Herald

Did Smith demonstrating he's a more on-form batter than Smith make the headline?  Did Wood's injury result in "England Winning Despite Being Without Super Speedster"? Did "Stoke Crisis Saved By Pope" register on the subeditor's consciousness?

What do you think they went with?

I mean to be fair to them the ball change was pretty significant

Absolutely bizarre to not pick Sam Hain in the ODI squad

Brydon Carse coming straight back in from a gambling ban is a bit of a weird one.

Another example of them really wanting to prioritise pace at the moment.

Luke Wright is one of my favourite players of all time but Luke Wright the selector confuses me.

Did expect James Coles to feature but I guess they've gone Mousley instead.

Joe Root surely should be in the ODI squad too
