He thought Scott Fraser's experience would be better under the circumstances as he described. I get it. Easy to criticise with hindsight. Besides, one of those many chances put away and we wouldn't be posting.

One thing that Apples has achieved is disciplinary improvement. Prior to his arrival, May and Dobbo were stacking up the bookings but neither have been booked since Holden went.
Just about thawed out from the game...helped by Avanti West coast turning the temp up to 40C on the train home yesterday.. Anyway..nothing new to add to the above..we should have won but didn't...but I did want to give a special shout out to the absolute bell who nearly gave himself a heart attack abusing the lino throughout the game...there are some very special people among us...

Me neither, I don't buy his explanation. Does L Watson really need consideration for games where the crowd is a bit bigger. Perhaps he put Fraser in there thinking it'd be enough to see off Carlisle and it didn't work out.

L. Watson is on loan from Luton. Someone had better tell them as over the weekend there were 52,000 at Man City & Newcastle and almost 60,000 at Spurs !!
But as usual its just guff from the manager. He has no clue what his best 18 is, let alone his best 11. Play Fraser, drop Watson. Play Watson, drop McGrandells. Play May as a 10, then play him wide right.
Sometimes I wish we were back in the 70's & 80's where mangers had just 1 sub to use & the first 11 picked themselves (bar injuries)
I will be amazed if on Charlton's big pitch Louie Watson doesn't play a major part against Cheltenham. Louie's a baller but I hadn't noticed that he's can always play 90 minutes, let alone two games in 4 days and make a major impact.
There are 46 games plus our mighty FA cup runs(WTF) and players do rotate in certain positions NOT JUST AT CHARLTON.
When nigh on everybody positions the team as playing well enough to control the game generating 22 shots some somehow still register it as a managerial failure. What a bizarre interpretation. It does no such thing. The result speaks to players not executing.
It happens….at all levels of football.
Of course the squad needs help. Constructed with another manager in situ IT IS UNBALANCED. You know this. You cannot simply manufacture balance out of thin air when the right resource is not in the building. To offset the shortfalls you explore players individual abilities to see if they resolve the challenges. Stop locking players into boxes.
May has done well; - in 12 starts up front he has scored 7 times - in 6 starts in other roles he has scored …………7 times
He had an off day. In fairness he was due one but for a guy who spoke clearly during the week about having a free role from which he has repeatedly made successful runs from late, deep & wide positions it is hardly a huge step to stay wider to add width.
Are some seriously telling me that the lack of goals on this day boils down to a debate over Fraser & Watson who have virtually identical appearances / goals/ assists statistics this season? Yet who if they find form, is more likely to contribute to a full seasons promotion campaign?
A lad of 22 still to register a full season’s play in senior football or a senior pro with 5 seasons EFL experience with League 1 sides invariably finishing in the top half of the table. Last season Fraser in goals & assists contributed to 20% of our league goals.
Playing career records; - Watson 39 senior starts scoring 1 goal with 3 assists - Fraser 192 appearances In League 1 with 35 goals with 28 assists
Fraser is the grown up in the room (with a contract to match). Still to pick up form after injury, Saturday, after decent statistical returns in recent cup/ trophy games, was his 3rd League start of the season. As with Jones in early season, as with McGrandles, as with Edun playing time matters.
Please stop endlessly scapegoating and throwing players under the bus. Appleton has worked with Fraser for 2 months. In the absence of Camara, he, the club and we need to see the guy get up to speed. Crucially those holding the purse strings need to see if Fraser can do so before making decisions in the January recruitment period.
I like Louie Watson. I hope we try to keep him but a) he has a different skill set b) he is not there yet.
Overall with the make up of the current attack I suggest a return of 38 goals in the 16 games (21 goals in 11 League games - a 20% improvement on last year) under Appleton indicates he has some idea of what he is doing.
Was Saturday frustrating? Absolutely but we need to let this team develop, adjust and grow. In recent weeks we have seen T. Watson, Edun and McGrandles all start to contribute.

You’re dealing with a load of League One players of relatively limited ability whose form goes up and down like a yo-yo, and with a surfeit of midfielders.
How is he supposed to know who his best midfielders are if he doesn’t try different combinations? It’s something of a miracle that he’s getting a tune out of McGrandles for example, and that wouldn’t have happened if he hadn’t put him in the team, at someone’s expense.
We won due to poor refereeing not good football. Our defence can't keep a clean sheet Our defenders and midfield have a habit of passing to the opposition CBT while a wizard on the wing has poor decision making when he makes the final pass or shot May has not had a shot on target, except the penalties, for the last two games against poor opposition
It was a poor display last night but it was a win and there were some positives with Edun linking well with CBT, AMB more confident, Jones improving and Alfie never giving up, but the rest are just average L1 journeymen
