A visit to the south coast to face top-of-the-league—and unbeaten in twenty-five—Portsmouth was on the cards today, a fixture we tend to get the better of. And, whilst we didn’t come away with all three points, this was something of a spectacle. Portsmouth got out to a great start, but we weathered that and put together a period of pressure of our own. We created chances, but lacked anything clear cut and we were less than decisive in front of goal. By halftime the two sides were only separated by an impressive volley from just outside the box that gave Ashley Maynard-Brewer no chance.
Pompey started brightly again in the second half, but it was Charlton that struck first to level the score through the in-form Alfie May. A penalty was awarded just minutes after to put Portsmouth back in control. Appleton made changes and Charlton proved scrappy, conjuring a number of chances to turn the result around. Conor McGrandles found himself nodding home, again narrowly beating the keeper at the near post.
Large parts of the game were end to end. We showed fight to get back into it on both occasions. Their keeper was beaten twice at his near post, where Ashley Maynard-Brewer made a number of amazing saves and suffered one unfortunate rush of blood to the head that resulted in the penalty.

Sure, we should have had a penalty for handball and theirs came from a rash challenge from Ash who was otherwise outstanding but absolutely no moaning today. That was a cracking game in which we held our own against a very good Pompey team in great form and at the top of the table. It genuinely could have gone either way. I hope it was even better for the travelling addicks as it was to watch on Charlton TV.
Great defensive resilience today. Lloyd Jones is fast becoming an excellent signing and Tayo Edun also had a very good game.
We’ve just got to take that kind of performance into the next three league games. Do that and we’ll likely be up in or very close to the play off positions. Much more like it!
So many times in the last couple of seasons it's bee boring to watch, but today was most enjoyable.

Maynard Brewer was absolutely brilliant apart from giving away the penalty.

There is more work needing doing before this squad becomes genuine promotion challengers but in terms of pure effort and persistence it's as good as it has been since Bowyer lost his marbles.
Just hope we get reinforcements in the new year as we have little or no depth.
Kinda felt sorry for McGrandles after he scored. Sure he'd have loved to have celebrated that properly but clearly doesn't feel wanted here. Hopefully a turning point for him.
As for their keeper, ha ha ha, you deserved that.
