POST-MATCH THREAD: Portsmouth vs Charlton Athletic: Saturday 11th November 2023 | KO 3:00 PM

edited November 2023 in General Charlton
A visit to the south coast to face top-of-the-league—and unbeaten in twenty-five—Portsmouth was on the cards today, a fixture we tend to get the better of. And, whilst we didn’t come away with all three points, this was something of a spectacle. Portsmouth got out to a great start, but we weathered that and put together a period of pressure of our own. We created chances, but lacked anything clear cut and we were less than decisive in front of goal. By halftime the two sides were only separated by an impressive volley from just outside the box that gave Ashley Maynard-Brewer no chance.

Pompey started brightly again in the second half, but it was Charlton that struck first to level the score through the in-form Alfie May. A penalty was awarded just minutes after to put Portsmouth back in control. Appleton made changes and Charlton proved scrappy, conjuring a number of chances to turn the result around. Conor McGrandles found himself nodding home, again narrowly beating the keeper at the near post.

Large parts of the game were end to end. We showed fight to get back into it on both occasions. Their keeper was beaten twice at his near post, where Ashley Maynard-Brewer made a number of amazing saves and suffered one unfortunate rush of blood to the head that resulted in the penalty.

Portsmouth 2 Charlton 2

Over to you.

Not there, but so envious of those in the away end when the second equaliser went in. Well done Al. Great noisy support could be heard all game.

Great result, away, against the top of the table, in form team who aren’t shipping many goals.

Just hope we get reinforcements in the new year as we have little or no depth.

Good interview with him on Charlton Live. He's had a tough time. Curbs saying it's a new start for him. Seems to be in a good space.

Great game. AMB made some cracking saves to keep us in it/make up for the pen. Shame about Dobbo’s touch in the last seconds

How can the refereeing be so bad week in week out?
    Var needed in lower leagues?

    What a great day out.
Arrived just before KO after a slow tour of South London on the club coach, watched the game through a goal net
But what a brilliant game despite all that. Well done players and fans unlike, great atmosphere in a real football ground.
Only sour notes; the usual shit Homer of a ref. Pompey GK needs to take look at a replay , first apologise to Alfie May, then his team mates . What an embarrassment of a player.

Oh Dobbo. That had 2-3 written all over it 🙁.
Really did. Square it May equals 2-3

    Wondered if they'd
interview him. What more was said?
