Post-match thread: Charlton Athletic vs Wycombe Wanderers: Saturday 23rd September 2023: KO 3:00

edited September 2023 in General Charlton
Michael Appleton’s first home game in charge saw visitors Wycombe Wanderers arrive in decent form after a poor start. Charlton played the best football in the second half, but always looked vulnerable on the counter. A great bit of play between Tyreece Campbell and Miles Leaburn was the difference, with MIles digging the ball out from is feet before firing past the keeper on 27 minutes.

Wycombe started the second half brighter and Charlton found themselves a bit at sea for thirty minutes. The changes on 80 minutes made a difference, with Chuks Aneke, Slobodan Tedic, and Tennai Watson coming on alongside a shift to 442. Watson and Tedic combined with a little one two that Tedic managed to float into the back of the net. The third came in added time, with birthday-boy Corey Blackett-Taylor bursting into the box past three players and slotting past the keeper with a right-foot-rocket that gave the keeper no chance.

It’s nice to celebrate a back-to-back win at the Valley. It could have even been that elusive clean sheet had it not been for an absolute stunner of a volley from Wycombe’s Potts.

Charlton 3 Wycombe 1

Over to you.

The shift to 4-4-2 won it. Why didn’t we start with that formation?! Excellent win!

I liked the mire direct approach  some players are going to have to impellor their long balls passes over midfield. Still do not like TC in thre middle. His best work was his interplay with Leaburn to set up his goal. That came from him being on the wing.
The defenders still look shakey though. What would the back four do without Dobson.

Would have bitten your hand off for a draw with the way that second half was going. Hate to dig out a young player playing out of position but we need to do whatever it takes to get Abankwah out of the lineup for the next game, I’ve not seen a player struggle that much for a while and I just felt sorry for him being thrown into that situation.

First half was the first time we’ve actually looked like we’ve got something about us all season. If we can get a few more midfielders fit we can start moving up to the top half at least.

Charlton better football second half? We played well first half but second half it was all Wycombe?

watson and tedic one two???? Blacker-Taylor to May. May stood there waiting for watsons run, played watson in who cut back for tedic who mis hit into the goal side of the side netting

Best I've seen us play in a very long time. We look organised, threatening and subs were good.

Wycombe are a poor team, bollocks to there form. Isted had nothing to do really and was fantastic claiming the ball etc.

Really hope we can build on this!

@Todds_right_hook I suspect that was a brain fart from @LoOkOuT, and he meant the first half, given the reference to Leaburn's goal.

Must say i'm impressed with Appleton today. Subs were spot on and that and the change of tactics got us the win. Would have probably lost this game a few weeks ago.

We’ve been in the mire for too long.

1st half we were great - lost our way a bit start of 2nd half for circa 25 mins - but subs and formation change made all the difference - we were well worth the win

Special call out for CBT - superb goal on his birthday

Feel good factor on a Saturday night 😀
