To be honest I’m not too sure many managers get complete control of transfers these days. I’m sure Holden was involved and had a voice in the decisions.
Can't get use to Holden being our manager & still see him as a stop gap - just here to keep us up & then gone in the summer.
Even if he does end up leaving in May, he'll have been in charge for more league games than Garner was. And about just as many games as Adkins or Jackson was in charge.
That probably says more about the trigger happy nature / poor up front decision making of our owner rather than the six month contract. But still context worth sharing...
Pretty clear, and obvious I guess from the timing, that these are not players Holden has chosen to be on his list. So whether they are going to fit into his style of play will be a lottery.
Why is it pretty clear and obvious?
He said in his interview that he has known Todd Kane for long time
I know his family live along way away in Salford but it would be interesting to know if he would relocate / stay if that becomes an option.
Definitely think he likes the club & is enjoying the challenge to turn things around (plus surely new owners would look to keep him if he brings the results).
Lets wait and see, if I had a pound for every comment on here from people quoting this and that player saying they are "too good for this league", "my xxxxxx supporting mate says he is a great buy", "the geezer will take the piss in this league" etc etc I would be a rich man.

Well, because he has not been here long enough to work out for himself who should stay or go, nor has he been here long enough to identify the right players from outside that he would need to replace those who do go, nor has he said these are players he has wanted playing for him, nor are they players he knows from other clubs. Its a list put together before he got here. He seems just to be having a phone chat to introduce himself for form's sake and then the deals are done. Pot luck.
Heard good things about Kane from QPR & Oxford fans.
Real gutsy full back who gets stuck in.
Both said he would be playing at a higher level if it wasn’t for his past ACL / knee injury problems. Hopefully he can stay fit and show us what he can do.
Now we know why he's here, to take JFC's place with the physio.

Really ? You don’t think he’s had any say in it ? Let’s try and be a bit more optimistic eh ?
Yeah right Holden has been after Bonne for years. I doubt he's even heard of him until now
I completely agree but when you way up the options, I think Holden would rather say yes to Bonne now then be left hanging further in the month, and I wouldn’t put him in the yes man category.

Do you think out of work football managers who are actively looking for a job just sit watching homes under the hammer all day?
I would suggest out of work managers have a better idea of what players they would like to sign than working ones who end up completely consumed with the grind of saturday-tuesday-saturday. They have a good idea of what sort of level they will end up at and the list of available players isn't infinite.

Holden was assistant manager at Bristol City from 2016 until 2020, including the evening where Bonne scored against them.
Of course he's aware of him, he'll have been aware of him since at least 2019.

He was assistant and manager at Bristol City for over 4 years, so it's not as if he's completely tied to the NW.

exactly - of course holden hasn't unearthed / suggested Bonne but if he didn't rate him or didn't think he fits what we need, i very much doubt his view would be ignored

You are correct. Out of work managers and Coaches spend more time networking and watching matches (after the break with their partner and kids) because they don't want to be forgotten and to most football managers and coaches, football is their raison d'etre, their drug of choice.
I'm loyal and supported JJ to the end and still think he can do well as manager but Dean Holden will bring more discipline to the team as he's not their mate ( "look at me when I'm talking") and with some more help in this window can at least have a strong 18 man squad for selection in positions they are comfortable with.
Let's get to the end of this season around 8th or 9th and then see if we can assemble a squad to be at least top 6 with everyone on the same page in the Summer.
We were imploding less than a month ago so let's not get ahead of ourselves and talk top six. One effing game at a time.
A certain poster said Tayo Edun was a done deal, but as we know until the contract is signed and medical completed its just speculation.
I hope it wasn't Kane or Edun as we want/need a left footed Left back.
I know his family live along way away in Salford but it would be interesting to know if he would relocate / stay if that becomes an option.

Given that Athletic interview with him and how depressed he seemed when he wasn't working, i think he'd love to be here next season.
’ Marmite mate. Some fans liked him, others didn’t. Rumours he’s a bit of a bad egg and caused some issues amongst the other players. Robins tried to bin him off earlier but we had so many injuries. He tenacious though and gets stuck in.
Living up to the name there. It's not like we don't (well, didn't) need extra bodies/cover at RB and up front as well as at LB so it's still decent sense to bring them in.
Edun is apparently still being sought after too so they are obviously still in the market for an actual left footed left back too.
Lets wait and see, if I had a pound for every comment on here from people quoting this and that player saying they are "too good for this league", "my xxxxxx supporting mate says he is a great buy", "the geezer will take the piss in this league" etc etc I would be a rich man.
Agree with this. The transfer policy has been a disaster over the last few years. I’m very much in the wait and see camp.
I’ll take Bonne as I think he did well for us and don’t get the criticism. Kane seems like he’s up for the fight, so that’s encouraging. The best thing about these deals is they are both short term. The last two Jan windows have shown up TS’ incompetence in running the club with Mansfield, Schwartz, Aneke and Fraser signing.
Now I know Fraser has returned to form recently, but you can’t say at the 6/7k a week wages, we’ve had value for money. We may do, if he carries on, but we haven’t yet. As for the other 3. Oh dear

Well then our options are a using pre-prepared list or signing no-one. I'm not really sure what the criticism is. Looks like Egbo could be out for the season or enough of it that we need another RB. If you say Holden hasn't been here long enough to identify potential targets then it's a good thing we have a recruitment team or we'd have nothing. I think you might also find that while managers are often invited to suggest players they think would fit, I don't think there's any managers at all who exclusively identify the players they want. It won't have taken Holden long to agree that one RB, one LB and a lack of goalscorers needs rectifying. He'll have been suggested players from a list and he'll have agreed to them. That's the way it is in modern football. Doesn't have to be a problem

For those guessing that Stockley might not be on his way to Gills due to them signing other forwards, it wouldn't surprise if his medical didn't go brilliantly?
Seeing as he can hardly sprint or spring into the air. A rigorous medical will not be easy for him.

All depends on the new owners if they want him ??
If you believe some of the rumours, Holden was appointed by Methven to steady the ship while the buy out was in progress. I doubt at this point “the new owners” whoever that might be have any idea who they might want and unlike Sandgaard might well follow the advice given by their football advisors. If the DD and exclusivity period are successful then I also suspect that Dean Holden has the job to lose.
Holden has been through some shite times outside of football and is so far doing a good job at winning over Charlton fans with his approach / the football he’s producing.
Hopefully we finish the season well & he puts himself firmly into consideration for the role full time.
A few more good results & I can see him earning some Dean Kiely style Deano songs.
