That's a ludicrous statement, just look at their records for the clubs they've played for. Marriott is a much better option then bonne.Todds_right_hook said:
I wouldn't class Jack Marriott as better than Bonne. Hasn't Marriott just been released by Peterborough? We need players that can get us out of l1. If Marriott is surplus at Peterborough, why would he do well here?Oh Eddie Youds... said:There must be other & better options than Bonne FFS!
What’s the point of recruiting Andy Scott & him giving the interview he gave last week if we’re now gonna follow that up by signing a headless chicken.
We’ve had enough shit signings over the last few years!
We should be looking at the likes of Sam Nombe, Jack Marriott, Aaron Collins etc. All of these will come if we pay the money.0 -
Never happening in a million years but i'd love Marriott & Wickham1

You'll probably get more games out of Bonne... Marriott is another I dont overly trust over his fitnessCAFCDAZ said:

Why have Peterborough let him go? Im not convinced with the one up top argument. It's a squad game and if Marriott was so good, surely they would want him to keep him and replace Clarke-Harris if he got injured or suspended.CAFCDAZ said:

Be funny if Bonne ended up at Peterborough now.Todds_right_hook said:

All this talk of Bonne, either positive or negative...can't really see him even wanting to come back here anyway knowing how he was perceived when he left for QPR, so not on as I see it...🤷♂️0

We also just put our best performance of the season in while playing 1 up top which is not a role that Marriott is good at. If long term Holden wants to return to his 3-5-2 then Marriott would be worth signing but at the moment for a Leaburn backup I can’t see us getting much better than Bonne that is going to sign for a lower mid table league 1 teamCovered_End_Lad said:
Peterborough play one up top and he’s behind Clarke-Harris who is probably the best striker in the division. Marriott is leaving because she wants to start games, personally I would have Marriott over Bonne every day of the week. Cost is the big difference.Todds_right_hook said:

All of those players, if available, would be looking to join a team that isn’t 17th in league 1. Even if we are the only team offering the money they want they’d probably rather wait till the summer than join us in our current stateOh Eddie Youds... said:There must be other & better options than Bonne FFS!

Bonne could help us get out of league 1 - into league 26

With regard to our January transfer dealings I said a week or so ago that I take what people say with a pinch of salt & rather trust their actions. I also said that I expect us to bring in 4 or 5 new players (signings & loans) and believe what Andy Scott said (to a point).
However, I would say that I expected something by now, but as these things do take time I'm not panicking yet, but if we get to the Barnsley game next Saturday without signing at least 1 or 2 players then I'll be seriously doubting Scott & his new cohorts intentions.9 -
That crack commando team of 4 appointed by the club to get us moving in the right direction and to sort recruitment….leads to Bonne?

Have we paid 300k to bring Purrington back yet?12

Bonne's tally of missed sitters were a big contribution to our last day relegation from the Championship. But he would do a job for us in Div One and push us up the table a bit. It is very telling that Peterborough can plan to off-load Marriott whilst we can only dream of getting someone with his experience and skill.
These days clubs seem to focus on strikers who dash around like super athletes. Think of Teddy Sherringham who simply had a nous for being in the right place at the right time and scored goals for fun. Kermorgant was of a similar calibre. If you can't read the game you won't score many goals.4 -
I’ve liked your post but my question is why would Scott and co feel the need to say anything about signing players and having a budget and strategy. They could have maintained radio silence just as easily. If nothing happens now, which I think unlikely then I’m guessing Scott was conned just like us. I think we’ll sign at least four and more likely six.golfaddick said:With regard to our January transfer dealings I said a week or so ago that I take what people say with a pinch of salt & rather trust their actions. Part of it could well be moving on players we don't want but if they sell the "asset" (singular) they will most likely doom us to relegation. A firesale is highly unlikely IMO, for loads of reasons.Showmetheway2gohome said:Or was Scott just brought in to get rid of players not bring in players0 -
Too much panicking going on over this. It's the 6th of Jan, not 26th, not even 16th.
Bonne is the only name people have to go off because it's an easy link to make, it's only player out there that we fans know. We have no idea who Holden, Scott, etc. are actually looking at. We're putting 2+2=4.5 and getting upset about something that may or may not be happening.
Holden and Scott have both repeatedly said that they will be doing business quietly. I understand Charlton fans don't have much patience for trusting new faces but we've got to take them at their word.16 -

81 new posts, shall I or shall I not trawl through only to be ultimately disappointed when the conversation has gone further of piste or more variations on the ‘Bonne’ debate!
In the words of Dirty Harry, ‘Well punk, do you feel lucky’ I don’t, so won’t bother.

Aaron Collins -25 L1 apps 2,212 minutes, 13 goalsSam Nombe - 25 apps, 1,730 minutes, 11 goals. 11 apps, 171 minutes, 0 goals in the Championship in 20/21Jack Marriott - 21 apps, 830 minutes, 4 goals. 44 apps, 3,922 minutes, 27 goals in L1 in 2017/18. 28 apps, 1,370 minutes, 9 goals in the Championship in 2021/22. Unwanted by a L1 team.Macauley Bonne - 43 apps, 2,761 minutes, 12 goals in L1 in 21/22. 33 apps, 2,352 minutes, 11 goals for Charlton in the Championship 19/20. Unwanted by a Championship team. That's all those players' best seasons at their highest levels and our current level. On paper there's not really a huge gulf between them. Nombe and Collins are halfway through so they could double their goal tallies (though obviously that would double their minutes tallies too) and Marriott had a brilliant L1 season but it was 5 years ago. I know people don't like Bonne because they decided he looks funny on the pitch or whatever but if we were presented with these four options without Bonne playing for us before then I don't think there would be so much resistance. The unknown player, like the injured player, is always much better than the one who you've seen play for you. I think we just make all players rubbish.0

A fresh start in a team that play to his strengths / style would be good for Jayden & us.7

So Gillingham, on course to break a record for least goals scored in a season, have decided that the answer to this problem, the striker who will turn it around... is Jayden Stockley.charlton_hero said:
Ooooookay then.11 -
That's one way of looking at it. Another way is that he was our backup striker we signed from non-league who had to play far more than he should have because when our star striker wasn't injured he was refusing to play, one of our other strikers was Chuks and Hemed scored 0 goals. Our next highest goalscorer who was still at the club after Leko and Gallagher went home was Naby Sarr with 3. We scored 6 goals after lockdown and Bonne scored half of them. The others were scored by Doughty, Pratley and Pearce. No-one else contributed. Those goals should have got us a point against Brentford at least but for Cullen losing his head in the box, should have been the goal that secured our survival against Birmingham but the rest of the team couldn't hold out for another 30 seconds, and got us a last minute draw against Wigan that left it in our hands on the final day. The one he missed against Millwall wouldn't have been such a big deal if the rest of the team had done their bit in the games where he did his part. Bowyer loved to criticise him though and that transferred to the fans I think.thewolfboy said:Bonne's tally of missed sitters were a big contribution to our last day relegation from the Championship. Decent summary... Effectively, our fourth choice Striker from the summer signings, was the one who almost kept us up, is the other way of looking at it - I mean these were Bowyer's comments after the Taylor injuryGarrymanilow said:
