When Joe Gomez went to Liverpool, it was undisclosed Charlton end but Liverpool announced to the world it was 3.5 million and they had mugged Cafc.
If it had gone to an auction, the fee would've been closer to 8 million, if all the big hitters got involved.
Roland Duchâtelet being a kind and benevolent owner wanted Joe to go to a club where he would be happy and best for his career so wouldn't sanction the auction with many clubs involved. 🤥
Apologies for acting as if I didn't know what happened with Joe's transfer but just wanted Mugged and Liverpool in the same sentence!
I will pass on what ITK folk will be aware of? That Gomez senior still has chats with young lads in the Cafc academy about the "pathway" to the 1st team if good enough.
No way Gomez would've signed for us without a release fee, i'm surprised he wasn't poached sooner.
He played for our U18s at a stupidly young age (13 i think), had played for England's junior sides, and also part of the team that won the U17 Euro's. Any club in the country would've wanted him.
Indeed. So have you never stopped to ask yourself why there was not a queue of other clubs indicating their interest via the usual media sources? Another Lifer, a good mate of mine, knows the answer but has never wanted to go public with it. Suffice to say that on this one, like the proverbial stopped clock, “Ronnie Moore” is, if not right on the money, not unadjacent to it. And that this is another entry in my list of evidence that agents are a malignant scourge that need radical reform and regulation.
If what’s being said is true, it sounds to me like the agent was doing exactly what he’s paid to do. What exactly would be wrong with that situation?

His agent played a very good game he told Charlton that Gomez would not sign a new deal unless they dropped the release price down to 3.5 mill .. unknown to Charlton he had already agreed a deal with Liverpool for the said price he joined then about 6 months later
Wow...that's actually astounding, if true. Not that I'm doubting you Ronnie.
No-one should underestimate the value of having a young player playing for Charlton, having made his league debut with the club, but now on loan from one of the biggest clubs in the world.
It's that sort of message that makes recruiting the best talent into the academy a tiny bit easier.

Yes and probably what got the kanu deal over the line as well - the formula is there - player gets a big pay rise, we get a windfall and a cut of future windfalls, the player gets loaned out toa club he knows and knows him and Chelsea potentially get a player 3 or 4 years down the line that may get into their first team, be sold or that they have wasted their money on. Chelsea taking a calculated risk that they can afford which may help us get to a better place than we are in right now. Did wonders for Palace and is part of the modern game.
We are never going to change the problem of our young players being harvested by bigger clubs until we are a Cat 1 academy. I have supported Valley Gold for many years and am happy to continue to do so but accept that money talks and our best player walks if the chequebook is waved. As an example of the reality of the system, my grandson is at Stevenage Academy and Manchester City bought his 13 year old teammate last season for £400,000. Yes, £400,000 for a 13 year old! That is without the cost of the lad's schooling and living expenses in Manchester for him and his Mother. It's about the big boys being able to afford to take a gamble on hundreds of boys knowing that a couple of them will make the breakthrough and earn a profit to make it worthwhile.

You'd have to ask Katrien Meire to fill in the bits Ronnie doesn't know about...
I don't know if my hatred of Chelsea affects my Judgement but personally I'm disappointed that Mason Barstow was sold in this window for 1.6 million up front when it's only a tad more than we got from Arsenal for Jenkinson,10 odd years ago, when he was a full back.
Carl Jenkinson 8 Apps for Cafc.
Yes I know that helped us bring in a new squad a decade ago but half of that has gone on Fraser; who I do rate.
I wouldn’t underestimate the value of an “unusually high sell-on”.
Ezri Konsa only went for around £2m which was apparently down to Roland wanting more up front and not as many add-ons. Aston Villa signed him for £12m not long after, 20% of that would have been nice.
The £1.6m is just a cash injection but the value of a high sell-on provides a level of financial security in the short to mid-term future.
God, no wonder they hoover up all the talent in the land if that's all it costs them. Oh well, we'll get our chunky sell-on fee in 5 or 6 years time when they are done farming him out on loan, assuming they don't release him on a free at that point.

It provides no financial security at all. After his contract is up at Chelsea he could leave on a free for Wycombe and we get diddly squat. Where is the financial security in that?
If he’s gone for 1.6m I think that’s actually a poor deal.
I’m very confident of the basic amount because I’ve had consistent information from inside both clubs and Chelsea have no reason to spin it.
Chelsea source was dismissive of the “chunky sell on”. Said they have a standard package. Nothing on that from Charlton other than what TS has said publicly.
I believe it is true that TS insisted on the loan, which Chelsea didn’t want.
My question would be: would his value have fallen if he’d stayed until the summer? I don’t believe he was desperate to go now.

It wouldn’t change my opinion that the agent did his best for his client, that’s his job.
The reality is, the player and agent had the club over a barrel, if the pitiful sell on was the best we could get, it’s significantly better than nothing, which would have been the result of the pair walking.
Maybe our management team don't rate him as highly as they have said publicly and feel 1.6 m is a good deal. A few goals will catch the headlines, but his all round game is very rough and a lot of the really high valuations are based on the assumption he'll just continue on the meteoric trajectory he's started out on, no guarantees there. Worth bearing in mind someone like Davison also bagged a few goals in quick succession earlier in the season, but that soon stopped and his overall game proved not to be up to it. He's now on loan at Swindon.
£1.6M seems disappointing to me for a young striker. Not my money though.
It does feel underwhelming but it could be enough to fund a promotion push for next season.
Not sure £1.6m is enough to fund an entire promotion push anymore. It’s not 2011. We paid 500k for Kirk alone, similar to bring Aneke back. Sunderland have been known to spend more than that on one player alone.

Charlton cashing in and getting mugged off at the first opportunity. Again.

Time will tell on this one, I guess.
Loving some of the spin on this. If Duchatelet had sold him for the same amount there would have been outrage.

Wasn't expecting a fortune, didn't get one.
Meh.
.scored more league goals than Mason, scored more goals in the championship than Mason.
