Have only scanned this thread but flabbergasted by the figures people are bandying about and how somebody can suggest that 1.6m for our 4th choice striker is not substantial!! We could buy 4 good league one players for that… Burstow has potential but 1.6m is paying a lot for that potential , as there’s no guarantee he’ll fulfil it on level he’s been at thus far (ie say he was 30) he’d be worth no more than 200 grand. If we have sell ons in there as well. 3/4/5m at this stage would be mad, if he turns out good we’ll end up with a lot more no doubt
Well I think it’s outrageous. How are we supposed to rant incoherently about being fucked over by Chelsea if they don’t give us any figures? We have a right to have irrational knee-jerk reactions condemning the owner as clueless, greedy, poverty-stricken or Rolandesque, but that opportunity is taken away by the conspiratorial silence coming from the club.
When you look at the BBC Transfer page for deadline day, NONE of the players brought in by EFL clubs have a declared transfer fee, or indeed the deals in Scotland or players moving abroad...
I've made the mistake of looking at twitter tonight and seen the gems that include "we got a good fee for someone who only scores tap ins" which genuinely mad me laugh. And "I don't want him, if he doesn't want to play for us we should play Kanu"
I know, its twitter and its babbling nonsense
It always saddens me when we sell a youngster especially over the last several fucken years when we haven't had the benefit of really seeing them tear it up. Even Jonjo got dropped because Parkinson struggled with a player who wasn't in his mould. Gomez I saw as a Rolls Royce type.player, same with Jonjo, Solly, less so Konsa, definitely Lookman that little fucker I Couldn’t believe was playing for us. The ones that upset me most was still Bowyer and Parker so maybe its best these players get picked off before we can get attached
Probably because now if you say you’ve just got £3m in the bank the next agent you speak to looking to buy a one legged defender will ask you for a mill in personal fees.
I remember asking Scott Minto at Orpington Rovers end of season presentation in 1994 as a 14 why he had left us for Chelsea.
I remember him giving a really diplomatic answer, the true gent he is. I still see in his eyes when he presents Charlton Tv he recalls my disappointment every day and is wracked with guilt.
Scott, if you read this...I forgive you. Let's both move on friend.
Thought Sandgaard's interview was very good. I really think he cares & will help the club succeed.
1 of the thing's I took from it is that I think Stockley is out long term
Compare it to 2019 when Roland took the Grant money on almost the final day and basically told Bowyer to get on with it. TS didn’t want to take the money and just leave us in a hole without a replacement.
Grant went straight into Huddersfield's first team (I think he might have scored at Stamford Bridge on debut?) so a loan back wasn't even a possibility.
Not aimed at you because you didn't say this but I see loads of comments about Roland "trousering" the Grant money or that 100% of the Burstow fee, what ever it is, needs to be reinvested into the team. I also see people say things like I paid £300 for a season ticket I was expecting a million pound striker in return. Do these people not understand basic economics and business finance?
Other than Southall, Amis (who we should be grateful for for finding Burstow 🙄🤔🙄😳) et al has anyone actually taken money out of the club in the last 40 years?
How can you not love Thomas after listening to that interview…. He’s an owner with money, integrity and love for the club.
I think it’s easy to hide behind the ‘other clubs will inflate their prices ‘ reason for not disclosing fees, but will they? Really? Agents and the players seem to drive deals through these days and clubs get the best they can in their wake. Clubs don’t want to upset players by blocking moves as they spoil the relationship and effectively lose the players anyway.
Thomas openly refers to players as ‘investments’. He signs players of an age that have sell-on value. He’s focusing on developing the academy beyond all else to farm more Burstows.
All to be expected of a lower league club these days, maybe. However, transparency to see how much he makes or loses would give me more faith in him as an owner.

I am not sure I buy this at this time though. By the time of the next window we are, what 3-4 months away. By then our losses will have swallowed the fee so anyone comes knocking and says an unreasonable price it is easy to say you sold to keep us running so jog on and pick them up for their worth at that point anyway.

Not to Chelsea it isn’t, it’s peanuts. They’re very good at making money from buying and selling players.
‘Chelsea made over £38m PROFIT in 2021 summer transfer window, despite £97.5m move for Romelu Lukaku’.
‘He’s one of our own’ is that Welling fans singing that or because he’s a Charlton supporter will that song get binned now or some Chelsea fans who come to our games will carry on singing it
Really not bothered that we have sold burstow - more bothered about getting a squad together that will get us promoted in the next year or so and I didn’t see him being a big part of that
We signed Mason in October 2020, just for sake of accurate information.
From memory Mason Burstow was born in August 2003. I would check but I will throw up if I see Chelsea player by his name.
This isn't the 1960's when you could leave school at 15. Joining professional academies at 16 or just 17 in Mason Burstow's case, you are still a scholar and under the academy rules. Even the brilliant Jude Bellingham who was elevated to Birmingham's 1st team at 16 had to have not only a football education but still do his studies off the field.
Daniel Kanu is either a 1st or 2nd year scholar and he was 17 about 3 months ago.
We've seen £1.6m and £4m mentioned. Based on Cawley's tweet yesterday I wouldn't be surprised if both were correct, with the latter including all the silly add-ons that will never be reached.

Chelsea were sniffing after him then and we jumped in.
Burstow had a 6 week trial at Chelsea in February 2020 but nothing came of it and went back to Maidstone or possibly Welling? Our non League experts from those clubs can explain. Also what type of contract if any Mason was on ?
I still see no indication that the money we got for Burstow is anywhere near the value a talented striker should get.
Talk of sell-on fees is nonsense when Chelsea will release him on a free in 3/4 years time anyway.
Chelsea's whole model is getting loan fees for a player for a while and then selling at a profit if they do well on loan - see Guehi, Abraham, Zouma etc just this summer, they even got £4m for Victor Moses who I don't think has actually played for them since about 1973.
If any club is a good bet for a sell-on fee, it's Chelsea.

It is so nice to have a decent owner.

Wibble. 🤪

Good interview but obvious that TS is very hands-on when it comes to transfers and squad make up.

Not relevant to this thread but interesting to learn that Bakrin missed 16 months of football.
