You are of course correct.  If we had signed a L2 forward with such stats there would be uproar. I got the same criticism for saying 'if they are good enough they are old enough'.

If you disagree the insults abound , ageist, IQ insults etc. Not one person but a whole tribe so to speak.  I think they hope to just make one give up. Don't give up. 

If Davison had been bought from FGR or on a free imagine the protests.
That doesn't make him a bad player of course. 

However I can't see how a bloke scoring 32 goals in L2 isn't better than one who scores 5/6 pro rata.  

Or a the players we were in for in January are suddenly a bit meh. 

Have you ever watch Mullin play?   I don't mean his goals on Quest or YouTube I mean actually play.

Quest doesn't count, You tube is off limits and as you ought to know because Mullin was only at Cambridge for 1 season . A season nobody could attend in essence.

Would you settle for ‘if you are good enough (and strong enough), you are old enough’, as a compromise? That’d be great. 👍

Jimmy Seed was a great manager, but I read that he believed that starving players of the ball in the week in training made them want it more on Saturday. It wasn't because he wasn't a great manager, his record speaks for itself, but that was the view in football at the time. 

I recall having a friendly argument with my father in law, that having a winger who never went into his own half would be a disaster in the modern game, but that was the view of how they should play in times gone by.

Football has moved on and if you transported an average player from today into the 50s, they would be a superstar. It is just the way football has developed and isn't a slight on the players that went before. They are all part of it moving from point A to point B and onwards.

Yes, the game’s certainly developed along with the strength, fitness and technical ability of the players. In fifty years time though they may be even fitter and faster and more skilful than they are now, but that doesn’t mean we can’t enjoy the likes of Messi and Ronaldo and Josh Parker etc as they’re the best available right now.

Not 100% sure how much JS actually starved the players of the ball, but they certainly did far less work on technique than they do now.

I wonder how some of todays players would have got on playing on the muddy pitches that were often the norm. The old ball was heavier and, especially on a cold wet day, could knock a player off their feet. Diving and shirt pulling were never a part of the game, and slide tackles and shoulder charges were expected of all players. My memory, or mental picture of John Summers is of him knocking defenders out of the way on the edge of the penalty area and falling into ankle deep mud as he put the ball in the net. The game has changed, so have the players,  I'm not sure if it's more enjoyable now to watch, or if it's as enjoyable to play.

Did alright. Wasn’t a massive presence in the middle of the park but did show some good technical ability and an eye for a pass.

That is the point. I suppose there is a limit around human capabilities, but even those increase as years go on. Look at World records in other sports and how few really old ones there are. What we also see in football is new approaches and tactics that can get found out and new tactics come in. We are seeing clubs using computers to assess the effectiveness of players.

Here is a rumor for you pick the bones out of this we have signed a striker believed to be Randall from Plymouth.  Also we are close to a CB.Enjoy this one bully boys I may be old but I have respect and just for the record my name is not Colin I wish everybody on here enjoy the new season and continue to support our great club.

I don't see a Randall in the Plymouth squad, there's a young central midfider they've got called Adam Randell but think he's pretty highly thought of. If we were linked to a Plymouth player I'd still like Pantuche Camara in the middle of midfield.

So just to check we're signing a 20 year old striker that has only ever played defensive midfield, with 2 goals in 42 on loan for Torquay in the National league.

Even I will admit I will be massively underwhelmed by that.

Or as Callum asks do you mean the Exeter winger. I'd be happier with that.

That's a good point , surprised there hasn't been more interest in someone like Randell given the club's thrown around as being interested in January, would probably take a bid similar to what Sunderland have made for Key to land him.

Thomas is due in London & likes a show though...

Oh definitely £1m on a player would be a huge statement for this league. With Thomas over I do wonder if things might start to accelerate on the signings front.

Sunderlands deal for Josh Key looks to include alot of add ons based on appearances & promotion being reached etc (making the upfront payment no doubt much smaller than £1m).

We apparently made a couple of bids for Joel Randell in Jan. Would be great to see Gallen strike a similar deal to Sunderland's for him this summer. You never know!

Randell and Key both played for Exeter yesterday .. Randell returning after a slight injury …… also Kirk and Dale both played for Crewe so if the player as “already “ signed it’s none of these

Randall at Plymouth, surely means Exeter? Would be nice but can’t see it happening as a few champ teams are interested. If we’ve signed anyone I don’t think it’ll be Joel Randell.
