The pre-season results mean nothing. It's nice when they go your way, but memory suggests we did poorly in pre-season both the seasons we got promoted.
Sheffield Wednesday fans seem to think they are getting Kwado Baah on loan from Watford, defo a player we should be looking at getting in on loan.
Think this is a example of signing someone based on one game. Looks a prospect but how well did he do all season? He would be a huge risk.
That’s true but you have to factor in he was playing in an awful team so he was targeted every game. In a better team he’ll have a lot more joy - he’s certainly talented.
To be honest I’m not bothered what other teams have or have not done. I am though concerned at what we have done so far. Maybe naively I was expecting more. I wasn’t expecting us to go around throwing money at it here, there and everywhere and spending millions but I was expecting us to assemble a more than capable squad, a squad that I could look at and say ‘yes, we can definitely finish top two’. I know it’s early days and I know they are working hard to achieve this but by this stage I expected more. My expectations have been fuelled by comments such as ‘that will be us next year’, ‘I want the majority of the squad assembled by pre season training’ and ‘we are going to blow through this league’. I don’t think it’s bedwetting to be concerned and neither do I think we will start the season with the current squad but I can’t believe there are many out there that are not disappointed with where we stand at the moment.

Possibly, I dont know as I didnt see enough of him. I do believe his best game was gainst us at the Valley so is misleading. Definitely agree he is talented and would love to have signed him permanently, but not sure hes the right signing on loan. A gamble either way and you couldnt have confidence he would be a success.
If there are no signings announced this week is it officially allowed to start panicking? 😳
No...
No season don’t start Saturday and window don’t shut Friday
You're right it doesn't. But if you are wanting to get out of this division a good start is preferable. That means having the bulk of the squad fit & ready by Aug 6th as well as having them all knowing how they are supposed to set up & how the manager wants them to play.
On the other hand, if you are happy to just jog along as you are & bring players in on deadline day then crack on.
I know which camp I'd rather be in.
Golfie, do you live under a rock?
It's not the way it works. You've been around long enough to know that clubs like ours have to wait until the big boys name their squads and players are made available for loan. And we will wait, hoping that we can pick up quality young loan players before the window shuts .
It's what we and other clubs like us have done for several years now. This season no doubt won't be any different.
I'm not talking about loans. I know 3 or 4 will come in towards the end of August. But that is 6 weeks away & 4 games into the new season.
We lost around a dozen players in June. As at the start of pre-season training we had just 12 first team players.
TWELVE.
I don't really care if you think the current situation is just peachy. I don't. And unless something seriously changes & we unveil 3 or 4 top signings in the next 2 weeks then I say here & now that we will be just like last season - huff & puff to stay in touch with the top 6 & fall at the last hurdle.
We've done this before, Golfie.
You say, "We lost a dozen players in June", but yet again you don't account for the fact that 5 of them were loans - and each and every club in the division lost all their loanees also. And have yet to replace them.
That includes us; like those other clubs we'll have our 5 incoming loanees by the closing of the window.
Every club in the division is trying to get players in. Yet this close season so far has been marked by low numbers of completed deals. Not just us, but our promotion rivals too - they are still needing to add numbers to their squads also.
We could get all nervous and angsty, but what's the point? Do you really think Steve Gallen and co are sitting on their hands?
Already we've signed 3 highly rated players in this division (4 if you include JFC). There will be other irons in the fire and more signings shortly to be made. Just because you don't know what's happening, doesn't mean things are not moving behind the scenes.
We could have signed any number of players and that would have quickly boosted squad numbers. But we'd rightly complain if they weren't as good as we already have. Instead, we've been told, we're seeking highly rated players and there's competition for them. We've raised our standards.
Do I think the current situation is "peachy"? Of course not, but it's no worse than most teams in our division. Have some faith in our recruitment team. It'll get sorted.

It would be an example of signing someone based on we game if "we" signed him. By we I mean fans, who had probably never heard of him before that game.
I would like to think our recruitment team might do a little more due diligence?
I see he has been recently capped by England U18s as well?

Just quoting the Charlton summary on Transfermarkt.
But apart from him, DJ and Stockley will still haven't bought anyone......

I hope their can be 1 or 2 youth players during preseason, who can show to Nigel they are good enough to step up to the first team.
The club needs a complete rebuild, it’s been run into the ground.
