I said this before but I'll say it again: why such resistance to Smyth? He's young, quick, hasn't found his feet yet, but according to people who know better than us has the ability to break through. He'd supplement our other forwards and we wouldn't necessarily depend on him. I know we only have room for 1 or 2 more players, but given a choice between him and Sorba Thomas, surely the one with league experience is preferable for a promotion push? Or we sign both! :)
Because a few articles call him a forward rather than a winger so some look at the stats and decide he’s an inexperienced striker who doesn’t score goals.

There will be a social media meltdown if he signs before the striker is announced.
I think Smyth will be the Striker... Unless your talking about Thomas here?

That's always going to be a problem for any footballer, surely?

“Neither the Gaffer nor myself honestly wish to stand in his way, as he’s worked hard to get to where he presently sits, but everyone already knows that he really is an outstanding talent and you don’t sell the family silver for under the market value."

Everything you say before the word but is bullshit.

You are standing in his way, he's a huge gamble for a league club and there's a risk you're over valuing him.
But then are Boreham Wood doing any differently to how we acted with Bonne and QPR?

Thing is the "six figure sum" is a bit misleading, did we offer £100k and they want £250k for him or did we offer the former and they want close to £750k

In which case I would perhaps agree that they're asking too much
Depends how good he really is, something we can’t tell from a few stats and a highlights video.

Leicester paid £1m for Vardy from the same league 8 years ago. Under £1m is a bargain if he has Championship potential and can make an impact in League 1 this season. I’m sure Boreham Wood think he has at least that sort of potential, and we wouldn’t be interested if we saw League 1 as his limit.

Yeah as per my edit, it really depends on the amount. Personally I think £100k is a lot of money for a non league player. It's a huge gamble. If they're looking for £200k, like you say it's not much more especially from our perspective.

If they want more than £250k then the chairman is taking the mickey a bit.

Me and you really need to stop having to edit our posts :D

Not maybe the most sensible business decision but at least we would know that the extra £100-200k or whatever it is would massively help out a national league outfit in the current climate. I know we are not a charity but that sort of money is peanuts to TS especially with the Bonne & Grant money. if the gamble doesn't work its not exactly a costly one!

Sandgaard has already confirmed that money is going to have to go towards the losses he's making what with COVID and the state of the club

Which is fair enough to be honest... At least we're getting transparency over that

I often find I write out a post, read it, think it's fine. I then click away into a new thread and then a thought comes back that I hadn't had whilst typing it out...

It happens a lot in the morning!

Wait... He's a Winger? - Why didnt you say so!!!! ;)

I think the business we have done up to this point has been superb but I'm really struggling to get excited about Smyth if he is the striker, we need a goal scorer!
100% in agreement. Part of me was hoping the departures of Lapslie and Oztumer meant we were preparing a decent bid for one. If it's Smyth I can't see us finishing anywhere near the top 6.

The Boreham Wood statement goes on a bit and, as well as pushing is us to increase our bid and sending a message to the player and his agent, it is probably also designed to encourage offers from any of the other clubs referred to.

Hopefully a deal can be done, although perhaps the loan signing of the QPR winger means that it’s off.

Sounds like a bit of a heads up from Boreham in that interview
of get your finger out Charlton, plenty of other clubs fishing
around, and would just be our luck should we miss out on what
seems to be a bit of a talent for the sake of an increase.
Fair play to them, they sound like a well run club

The statement is clearly a rallying call for a bidding war, why else would he list all of the other clubs.

Quite odd for a chairman to publicly do that, I guess they actually need some money today.
Quite possibly so but at least he has had the balls to put it in "black and white" and not it to a press contact. Why would you do that unless you wanted to unsettle the player? I haven't seen any of the other mentioned clubs' media links announcing that they were interested in the player but, possibly, it is out there?

I'm with you on this, we need goals in the team, we didn't score enough last season to achieve our aim, and won't score enough this season, with Smiffy in the side, i'm fully prepared for a big slice of humble pie , if this fella signs and scores a hatful, probably better to sign someone where our expectations are low, rather than a Hemed who we thought was going to be a star.

Worth mentioning I think that if we haven't agreed a price with Boreham Wood and haven't started negotiations with the Sorba I find it hard to believe we'll get this done today.

Hope we haven’t told him not to play and that it’s his agent. Dogshit behaviour.

I hope we pay a fair sum. If they're asking anything north of £250k I think they're taking the piss.

Rumour on Twitter that they want over £500,000.

Could be nonsense but that’s ridiculous if true.
    That's that then ;)

You sound certain about this.  But I’m just gonna say I’ve seen him play once, Sunderland V Accrington it was 2-2 on sky the season we got promoted and he played up front as a number 9.  He scored and was a menace the entire game.

After Lyle, I honestly can't see Gallen and Bow doing that.
