I think the next two games will show us the mettle of Robbo. Playing JJ, Crofts and multiple CBs on the bench or Botaka, Chicksen, Tex and Ba. His own man (where he asesses loanee recalls in January) or a regime apologist.
I thought we did ok yesterday. I think the 3-5-2 was always going to make our midfield look weak. Jackson takes a lot of stick but the problem is that with us being so weak in the middle and then haveing three in the centre Jackson was always going to come inside. 4-4-2.
Very few teams get the 3-5-2 to work. United's three centre backs stayed deep and the other seven moved up and down the pitch together we we were overrun the whole game.
Despite having few shots on goal I thought we looked quite dangerous on the ball in the first half. Their only goal came from a very clever free kick and we kept them out for the rest of the game.
Sure, the equaliser came late but let's not kid ourselves, United didn't sit deep they attached for the whole game and only scored one goal from a neat trick.
Following on from two comfortable wins I think this was a solid performance and a good result against a team that is most likely to finish top two and much higher than we are.
I didn't see the Port Vale or Bristol Rovers game but I came away from this one feeling more positive than I have this season. Promotion looks a real possibility to me now.
Easy to make 3-5-2 work against a team with no pace out wide. Playing Jackson on the left (who did manage one really good 1st half cross) against them, played nicely into their hands.
Exactly. Negate 3-5-2 by FBs advancing into midfield but Fox and Foley don't have that in their DNA. Three questions. Is wing backs the Blades normal line up? If yes did we scout them? Do we actually scout opponents? Because I am sure in recent history we didn't (at a competent level) do this because we simply didn't have anyone on our payroll, not involved with day to day, that had the c.v. to do it. Who has that role currently?
It didn't look like we'd covered them yesterday. Apart from being outnumbered in midfield, we allowed Duffy to run amok from a free role in behind the front two, and seemed to be caught out at nearly every set play.
The best way to stop 3-5-2 being effective is to play three central midfielders and two wide attackers to stretch the the left and right centre backs into the wide areas, as happened in the last few minutes. Lookman on the left and Botaka on the right forces the wing backs to stay deep to make sure they cover the space they operate in, then get the full backs running forward to overload the opposition full back areas. If the two centre backs are pulled out, the central defender of the three is isolated against Maginnis one v one. 4-5-1 to 4-3-3.

Will be interesting to see if Tex plays.
Indeed it will.
I understand that Katrien has stated privately that she wished Brussell would play him as he's fit & there's definitely NO financial implications if he is selected....
But then we know our CEO has problems in recognising the difference between truth & fantasy.

I tend to lose interest as well as the will to live when any sentence contains the thoughts or sayings of our beloved CEO. I am not sure she knows at the start of any sentence what she is going to say by the end of it.
Botaka: an enigma, talented with the ball at his feet, but is he selfish and lazy or just really really dim? output always so much less than his apparent parts suggest - what is the opposite of synergy? entropy?
I have called him a luxury player for League 1 in the past, but strange words on a day when after Duffy went off for United and Botaka came on for CAFC, at last we had someone who could run at their defense and show some silky skills. We have enough water carriers already. Without Holmes and Lookman double marked, Botaka did well in his cameo role.
What did you think he did wrong yesterday ?
Or like others, did you head for home early ?
Stayed to the end and apart from getting tripped up don't recall Botaka's contribution, can't recall anything he's added beyond the first 5 minutes or so of his very first appearance, the longer he's on the less he seems to contribute.
Sounds as if a point was a get out of jail one. That's ok. Good that Robinson will have clearly seen our deficiencies and will look to address as soon as he is able.
As long as we continue to tick over the points tally I don't mind having our cracks exposed
Speak for yourself. I'm not in favour of having my crack exposed.
Only watching the video clip - but for their goal, that Sheff Utd freekick routine was well thought out.
Caught us absolutely cold with no defender available to pick up their wide runner penetrating behind our defence.
Why do Charlton rarely seem to put together clever deadball moves like that?
For their goal, Sheff Utd also had a player at the very end of the wall who was there specifically to block Lookman trying to make a run to block the goalscorer - we were asleep, big time.

Seeing that our equaliser also came from a free kick, maybe we also can put together clever deadball moves!
It was certainly a decent cross from the unlikely source of Chicksen, right into the danger zone, as opposed to hitting the first man or disappearing into the crowd.
Left after 85 mins (long drive home) and assumed we had lost. Didn't hear any roar whilst walking away from the ground to suggest we had equalised.
Botaka 3
Oh that explains it. How anyone can leave before the final whistle and marks players for the full game is beyond me
Me thinks that seeing 85 mins of a 90 minute game is enough to give an opinion and mark players!
Me thinks thou dost think incorrectly. Anything could happen in those remaining five or more minutes that could have a critical affect on the marks due.

This is actually part of Robinson's cunning plan to get a two-and-a-half year payoff after only a week in the job. Pick Tex to start, be told he's only allowed to put him on the bench and not bring him on to actually play, then resign and sue for constructive dismissal.
Unbelieveable league. On Saturday's performance you'd hardly think it possible, that they'd lose at home to Walsall. Although, they do seem to lack a goal threat, apart from Billy Sharpe.
Happy days. Unlikeable team. Apart from Duffy, because of the left peg. Fans hardly entered into the spirit of the protests either. Cheated for their goal too. (Watch the replay).

I thought they pressed us but looked very limited. They only scored one goal - Phillips did make a coupel of good saves but I thought he could have stopped the goal. They stifled us through workrate, they may not have felt the need to play that way against Walsall. Did Duffy play against them? I think he looked their only player with anything about him ability wise.
They also made a couple of defensive errors that we didn't punish because we needed torisk an extra forward!
The amount they had to put into Saturday's game might not have helped them either.

Losing 1-0 at home to Walsall tonight.
