Jacko got an affectionate standing ovation when he came off, which was as much about his general standing at the club as it was for this afternoon, because without his lovely threaded goal it was kind of sad looking at his lack of mobility compared to the player he was. Saying all that, Scunthorpe tried the kind of threaded goal Jacko scored on several occasions, but did not have the class Jacko has to score them. Jacko scored hard on the heels of Lookman's beauty, but up until that point it was more or less all Scunthorpe. We had had a flurry once during the first half hour, and a poor referee turned down what seemed to me to be a clear cut penalty when Holmes was chopped in the first minute or two. More irony because a goal then might have been the fabled 'scored too early' goal, but Scunthorpe, as a lot of other teams do, identified Ricky Holmes as the danger man early on and certainly 'did a job' on him. There was poetic justice that their cynical pursuit of Holmes then ushered in Lookman who absolutely swung the cup tie in our favour. After Lookman scored we improved quite a bit. Second half Scunthorpe started really well, and it was Rudd who played them single handedly for a while, but they scored the inevitable goal after about 52 minutes. After that it was a bit nip and tuck, where we were trying hard to hold on to the advantage, not desperate, but made to sweat at times, then there came the adjustments, and the substitutions and the shape of the game changed, Scunthorpe played well, but we were always a threat on the counter attack. It was going to be either 2-2 or 3-1 and Fred fed Lookman who sealed the deal in our favour. Scunthorpe fans sang about being top of the league, they are good, but their fans need to be a bit cautious because they are not quite as good as they think they are. Sadly some of our players are as, errr, indifferent as we know them to be, and unsurprisingly today it was Foley who reminded us what an essentially makeshift make do and mend outfit we are. Scunthorpe were a more coherent actual team than us, but we do have individuals capable of making a difference as we saw today. Early on Fox was excellent and generally had a good game, Bauer harshly booked effected his game, dodgy moments early on from Konsa but he settled down well. Crofts was OKish, Fred was better. It would be nice to think Ajose was a problem for Scunthorpe, but he really wasn't, but the admirable Magennis battled wholeheartedly throughout as he always does, if his flashing first half header had been a goal it would have been just reward for a proper footballer playing properly. My sons friend said he would have preferred three points from all of this, but for me a cup run is our last remaining opportunity to make it into Europe! Bring on Millwall
Wasn't there but , credit where due. Scunthorpe played their first team, and we came away winning 3-1 . So perhaps we are turning into a more cohesive team, than I watched a few weeks back. A win next week, could start to convince even the firm dis-believers. At the end of the day this is a poor leauge, and being in the top six of it, should not be beyond this squad.
Well shut up then... I only comments at games I have been too...we're you at bury and Oxford did you work a night shift last night are you going in to do a 12 hour night shift now....well I did and am but still went....
Good for you. Calm yourself down, what you going off on one for? Your initial reaction at the game was not favourable, just goes to show how fortunes can change during a game, chill.
I am very chilled ....
Well I'd hate to read your posts when you're upset. You must admit your reaction of 'we are not interested' early on, to 'those that stayed away, it's your loss' was a classic case of don't speak too soon. Anyway glad you enjoyed the game in the end.

Sounds like a well earned 3 points which will keep us in touch with our promotion contenders and a 6 pointer against our rival for league Champion. Hats off to Fraeye and the lads.

Great result but pathetic from our fans. I get the whole thing about staying away but no excuse with the % distribution of ticket sales in the fa cup. If we do blag it to the 3rd round and get an away tie at arse for eg, are the stayways going to maintain their stance of not lining Roland's Pocket. Of course not. Today was the day when people could come back to the valley, without fear of giving that Belgium cunt their money and they chose to stay away. Absolutely pathetic.
Struggling with all things Charlton at the moment. Most neutrals would look at those stats and say it was an exciting end to end game, yet I still found myself increasingly bored and I've got into a horrible habit of only really getting animated when someone does something wrong. At the moment attending games is pretty depressing. Freezing cold today and the atmosphere in the ground was like a morgue.
As for the match, we started well, could have had a penalty and then Scunthorpe took over until we scored. Belter from Lookman. We had a little spell before half time but make no mistake 2-0 at half time was hugely flattering.
Scunthorpe came flying out of the blocks second half and it was only a matter of time before they scored, if it wasn't for Rudd they may have been back level within 5 mins of the half kicking off.
Some decent performances, from Lookman, Ulvestad and Rudd but largely we are a workman like huff and puff outfit. I'm becoming like a stuck record, but until we get some legs into central midfield I don't see the entertainment factor going up.
It has to be Slade's influence, but at times we are ponderous and move the ball so slowly, that I find myself spending more time checking other scores on my phone as oppose to watching the game!
The fact that Scunthorpe are at the moment romping League One says a lot about just how shite a league it is. They were ok today, but if they are the best the league has to offer then it truly is a weak division.
Hopefully a few more wins will revive my Charlton mojo, but all the while we are being "treated' to Slade's brand of football enjoying games seems a million miles away.

Cracking game that started off with us under a bit of pressure. Holmes was quite busy and should have had a penalty when he was clipped making run past the defender. Then an injury forced Holmes off seeing Lookman take his place and probably against the run of play scored the first with a stunning left foot curler past the keeper into top corner of the net. Another piece of skill saw Lookman set up the second with JJ drilling the loose ball past the keeper. Scunthorpe came out for the second half all guns blazing and Rudd first saved a one on one with his legs before saving another with his feet during a goal mouth scramble. Eventually Scunthorpe pressure brought a goal when Hopper scored with his head at the near post from a corner. The game was killed off with a move that started off deep in our half with Crofts releasing Ulvestad who drove to the edge of the box before releasing the perfect lay off for Lookman to prod home a shot that deflected in off the keeper. Overall a very entertaining game with both sides going for it. Magennis put in another shift having one header tipped over the bar and winning plenty of headers. Bring on Bolton in the 2nd round!
great game ajose was pants again and everyone else played well and the west stand was like a morgue and i thoroughly enjoyed my experience coming over from the east stand. slade has to learn the players have to be hungry to play and ajose clearly is not and lookman clearly was. magennis is taking the kermorgant role of holder header provider he is a real asset . jackson is a legend and patrick bauer is essential in defence as is rudd and slade showed intent in his line up so well done for that . all goals were superb and what a great performance in front of goal (except for ajose) looking forward to swindon next week
Nice moment when Lookman had scored his first from a cracker of a shot, as we were celebrating the goal they showed the goal on the big screen and the charlton fans stopped celebrating to watch in silence and then gave a collective 'ooaaarrr' when it went in again

You haven't been to the last 2 league games.
Agree about the league being poor though
Rudd made some excellent saves.
Bauer was stupid for ignoring the ref. He would have got a talking to rather than a yellow card if he'd gone to him.
Lookman can really hit a ball with little backlift.
Novak is looking a lot fitter and I'm still not sure what Botaka needs to do to get a start.

But I know that it wasn't the FA cup but the game at Stamford Bridge will live long in my memory.
You never know....
